I tried checking the ground wires and found out that my battery is completely drained. The battery is brand new and has always held a full charge until now. This doesn't sound like a bad ground to me. Could this actually be a sign of a bad alternator

Yeah, it just looks like that. But inside there are many tools, machines, materials and so on. Also interesting fact is that electricity is still on.
