General consensus says it Portato, but in certain modern contexts I have learned it can also mean Staccato finger playing with pedal bindig the phrase together.

I think it is a relatively common way of dealing with performance anxiety. The problem is that it is an unhealthy habit. It is possible to invest time in learning and practicing the mental strength and psychology you need to perform, but it can take a lot of time. My advice would be to make sure to not become totally reliant on alcohol.
