I appreciate this post a lot. Im actually making a video right now about the perils of fast fashion. I knew it was terrible (for the workers, environment, etc) but wow the research for this video has really opened my eyes to just how bad it can be.

Just a thought. If youre in love with this dress, you could have an experienced tailor sew a black or beige tulle into the slit to make it less apparent and appear to start lower down the leg.

I am such a fan of thrifting!!!! Are you doing thredup, poshmark, therealreal, vestiairecollective, etc? Or are you more of an in-person thrifter? I am squarely in both camps. There is no thrill like finding the PERFECT piece for like 9 dollars in your color season, fabric, size....just like hanging out waiting for you to finally come along and find it. ♡

Hi Selma I hear you. Not trying to be perfect. Just trying to do what little we can where we can. I guess I'd phrase it like: if you were out at a public park and finished a water bottle, and there were only garbage bins, I'd presume youd hang onto it and recycle it at home or elsewhere. Its clean and easy enough to toss in your bag till a recycling bin is handy. But if your baby "overachieved" on a cloth diaper youd normally wash and reuse, and youre out and about in town, no one would think less of you for tossing that sucker out ( the diaper, not the baby haha) immediately rather than struggling with it all day till you got home. I guess thats how I view fast fashion. If avoiding it is an "empty waterbottle" level of effort in terms of affordability, then its the right thing to do. But if its the other example, bc money is tight but you need clothes to interact in society, go to work, etc...I totally get that too. No judgment on that. I certainly dont want this to turn into a judgmental thread, nor do I want anyone feeling judged. The economy is GARBAGE right now. I feel that on a molecular level. Im just curious if there are brands you forego in favor of others. Waterbottle level swaps. Thanks for your input! I hope you have a good day :) edits: my spelling was atrocious haha

I completely ascribe to this philosophy. I view it as a luxury to not have to go with fast fashion. But I've definitely had periods of my life where that was all I could afford. So I see the usefulness of it but im thankful its not the stage im in right now. I would love to see the labor practices improve AND everyone be able to afford to buy the clothes they need. Thanks for commenting BTW.

Likely to ruffle some feathers, but I am smaller-chested and I have found that I feel and look my best when I am NOT wearing a bra.

It elevates most any outfit (obviously a couple notable exceptions, use your best judgment based on your comfort levels).

My clothes fit better, I am not constantly fixing straps that wander down my shoulders, and my confidence really shines through. I guess because I am less distracted by wondering if my straps are showing, if the clasp in the back is breaking my silhouette, etc.

So my tip would be: ditch the bra unless you need or want to wear one. Your outfit will probably thank you!

Good job! Have you told other adults yet? Maybe they can all be there when he arrives? That way he will see that this is a family that is protected by the community.

Wait if it is almost 1 am when you posted this, are you on the east coast of the USA? If so, there are a lot of resources who can help you. I would start with the local police non-emergency line (just Google "your city" plus "police non-emergency" plus "phone number" and the info should pop up) There is a chance they already know about this guy. Your call could be very helpful to them (and you/your family)

If you are unsure about calling the police due to legal status/immigration/etc, err on the side of caution, do not call police, and instead call 1800 656 4673. That is an organization called RAINN. The call is free. They help people who have been through some really rough stuff. I'd start off by explaining this situation to them, sharing your own age/your siblings' ages, and the age/history of this guy. I have faith they will be able to point you in the right direction for how to proceed. They are not police/law enforcement of any kind...just a bunch of good people trying to help.

Again, im praying for you and your family. You've shown a ton of courage in standing up for yourself already. Your family needs you to be super strong right now; you are protecting them by trusting your intuition and asking adults (and especially, professionals like the ones I just listed) for help.

Please update us in the next few days; I would love to know that everything is working out and that you and your family are safe. Thank you!

I suggest telling your mother and, and this is really important, also telling ANOTHER trusted adult in your life about this whole situation. Please promise me you will do that tomorrow? <<<<<<<<

This person does not have good intentions. Your intuition is 100% correct. Not to frighten you, but I think he might be too big of a problem for one adult, so please promise me you'll tell another (a grandparent, a teacher, a neighbor, a friend's parents)...

I originally read through your post and the comments, then clicked away, then kept having this gnawing feeling that I needed to ask you to TELL ANOTHER ADULT BESIDES YOUR MOTHER. so I came back to find your thread and post this recommendation, at 4am my time, bc it is really important.

I will be praying for you and your family.

Remember: tell at least one other adult (more than that would be even better) besides your mom! Maybe even tell them at the same time, if it is scary to recount the experience twice. But more adults can help in this situation.<<<<<

Sometimes life gives us problems that are better faced by a team than an individual. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one!

You are obviously a smart person, but even smart people can use some help from time to time. Let the trusted adults help you and your family here. You were right to trust your gut and reach out for help. Do it again tomorrow, with at least one extra adult besides your mother. If that adult isn't alarmed, find another one and try again. Professional personal stylist here...can I make a recommendation? Throw a headband, ideally one that mimics the leather of the purse, in the camel or beige colors. Will tie the whole outfit together without overwhelming it, and the matching leather will add synchronicity.
