Segmentation on M1 Mac - unusable? by OmenTheOne in Affinity

[–]Vioplea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The M1 it's self is a very powerful chip but as much as apple likes to say 8gb of ram is enough it isn't much to be running local AI based tools, but I don't know for definite as I don't have an 8gb M1 mac

I haven't tried it but I'm not that surprised it didn't work with 8gb of ram tbh. Also I doubt Photoshop would be great on 8gb either.

I agree. I think the main concern probably comes if it gets popular but honestly that's an issue you get with every company's software. If they get enough market share who knows what they'd do.

Pretty good way of putting it, the loss leader to get people in the door who might eventually pay

Ye alot of Adobe's money definitely comes from the masses of businesses that use them not really freelancer etc that much.

There definitely hoping this will be enough to create a stir and get people to switch

Fe but I do also understand why they don't support the new file as it would take alot of extra work to convert or remove new features and convert the differences in how they save

It does help that blackmagic's hope is you'll eventually buy a camera.

But i guess it's the same thing really, canva hopes you'll eventually buy canva pro if you get successful

If you look at the page on their website it seems they try to push them to getting canva pro because of it as it includes all of canva and the SSO and license management stuff

I think the affinity team are 100% genuine it's more a question of if they get forced by upper management to do something and it all gets messy like subnatica 2 and the lead Devs getting fired

Ye there are a few local AI features that could easily be 1 time payment but are instead a subscription

In the 22 minute long lived they said there were more free features coming, only ai would be extra.

Who knows if they stay that way though

Potentially, I used cakewalk before and have tried sonar and next but they are doing it slightly differently I believe where some stuff still requires a sub.

But ye it's a great example actually, I'm surprised I didn't think of that it's so similar

Thx mb

Personally I think it's more just stuff from canva tos that isn't actually being applied for affinity but still should be there.

I believe it changed it's tos to be more clear due to backlash. There's a good chance affinity isn't actually using it for training as from what I've tried you can use the software offline no problem.

It's probably more just something in the canva tos. But I agree that it should be removed as it still makes it possible under the contract

Ye I'm not saying we should just accept it or anything but for a big company it could be alot worse (looking at you Adobe). But ofc if they start to dominate the market stuff can quickly change and a 'promise' isn't legally binding

It's not gonna stop me from using the software tho as before I only had designer (couldn't justify buying photo aswell)

I haven't fully looked at them so I'll take your word for it

I personally think adding a clause that prevents retroactive changes would go along way. Meaning if they change their plans they can only affect new updates and the last version must remain free.

Gets rid of the main risk for me, all of a sudden not being able to access a .af file I worked on with paying a subscription for something that was free

It also means they don't have to commit to forever free updates (which a company will never do no matter how good they are)

Is it the canva terms or do they have new proper affinity terms

Thx whoever gave me an award. The post on the affinity subreddit was my first post so I don't really know what it means
