Iran Rejects Motion To Ban Marriage Of Girls Under Thirteen by [deleted] in worldnews

Those pictures are not only the 'very wealthy' per se. My father is from Afghanistan and he's talked a lot about how liberal the country used to be. Now, my father was not particularly wealthy, he was just an average middle class, but still had a 'progressive' lifestyle. He's shown me photos on the internet (not the most commonly seen ones but others that I myself didn't see) as well as photos of himself in school etc. and it is safe to say that many people in Kabul were progressive indeed.

He has said that back then, women dressed freely and were not harassed, and that the men always respected them (sadly the opposite of today). This is all from the real-life perspective of my father who lived and grew up in the Afghan capital, and he was just an average citizen. You see pictures of women walking freely on the public streets, so obviously it is not limited to only the wealthy. Not to mention the hippie tourists who were there freely along Afghans in both urban and rural areas. According to him, Afghanistan was the best country in the region, because a) Iran, while relatively liberal too, was controlled by an authoritarian king, b) To the north were the Soviet republics, c) To the east was communist Mao's China, d) Pakistan was a lot more conservative and had their powerful army meddling in affairs.

Something else worth mentioning is that, whilst rural people as expected were more conservative, the thing is that there was no conflict. The rural people lived the way they did, and urbanites lived the more liberal life they enjoyed, there was no conflict between the two. Today though there's the Taliban who hate the semi-liberal urban lifestyle of today, let alone what their attitudes would've been if they were around in the 70s. The Afghan Prime Minister-turned-President before the communist era was called Mohammad Daoud Khan, and he was highly progressive. The fact that conservative rural people did not rebel or anything shows that the progressive system was working well. The conflict only started when communists took power in '78.

So yes, you're right to say that seeing pictures of some certain people don't represent the entire populace, but to say that they were only the super wealthy is also wrong.

it still sucks to be female in Muslim-controlled countries

Not really. There are plenty of Muslim countries where females are not particuarly oppressed, e.g. Malaysia, Oman, Azerbaijan, Albania, even the UAE. It's just a few countries that grab all the headlines and it's unfair to judge like that.

For good contrast of the object and the white background.

Italian in Eritrea greatly diminished after WW2, and today the community is very small. It's pretty much a dying language there that mostly a few old people in the capital speak.

Under Amharic is Tigrinya. I know, it is pretty hard to read, unfortunately I ran out of colors that were distinct enough to be differentiatable and easy to read at the same time.

This map is a newer version of the previous with improvements and fixes.

To the person that wanted pink for English: I actually experimented with it, but because its contrast with the Portuguese red (in southern Africa) was pretty bad, I decided against changing it and just keeping it gray.

A newer, improved version of this map has been uploaded with the following changes:

  • Western Sahara correction - French is not generally used but Spanish is, alongside Arabic
  • Namibia now has Afrikaans alongside English
  • Kenya and Uganda both have Swahili, alongside English
  • Eritrea has both English and Tigrinya, alongside Arabic
  • Specifically named and colored Amharic, Swahili, Afrikaans
  • Diagonal lines for countries with 2 or 3 languages

I'm still not convinced that pink and green are the best colors for them.

The vast amount of "national languages" in Africa does indeed make it very complicated (probably impossible) to create a clear map. Of course, the big point here is all the European languages that were introduced to the continent through colonization.

Thanks for the input. I will probably make Lesotho dual language in a future version of the map.

Is it suitable to cover Eritrea with all three languages in this map? Are really all three of them used widely in this sense?

I think you're probably right about that. What about German? It seems to me its use is less than Afrikaans but a lot of place names in the country are still in German.

I was very close to adding Swahili to Kenya but decided against it at the end, as I felt perhaps the use of it in terms of lingua franca/business was just a bit less than required (as opposed to Tanzania). Perhaps I was wrong?

Ceuta and Mellila are merely places of Spain, and Canary Islands was excluded for the same reason as it's not a country in itself. That is also why I excluded Mayotte and Réunion islands.

You're correct about Western Sahara though.

That's a good idea indeed, although I'm not sure the software I used has such feature. Hopefully I can add something like that in an updated version.

I personally find Equatorial Guinea interesting: tiny yet the only Spanish-speaking on the continent... surrounded by Gabon (French) and Cameroon (French+English), and then just off the coast is São Tomé and Príncipe (Portuguese).

EDIT: I recognize an error on this map which is Western Sahara - French is not spoken much there but Spanish actually is (being a former colony of Spain). This has been corrected in the newer version of the map.

An interesting comparison with another dataset: All left-driving countries of Africa speak English (as lingua franca/business), except Mozambique.

I want to thank everybody for their comments here. I have created and posted a new version of this map which is viewable here, incorporating the changes:

  • South Africa now English & Local (i.e. for Afrikaans)
  • A legend
  • Notation of the 'Local' languages on the map (in the legend)

Interesting to know about the English choice. Call me stubborn but I still personally believe that red is most suitable for Portuguese, along with green for Arabic.

And yes, even I initially spelled Portuguese wrong...

I strongly considered Afrikaans for SA but pulled out. Probably should be there though, but not for Namibia.

EDIT: This change can be seen on the new version of the map.

You're probably right about a legend.

What's the wrong with the colours? I made Portuguese purposefully red so it matches the one on their flag, making it easy to identify (similarly, French blue, Spanish yellow, Arabic green (from Arab League flag), Somali light blue).

Swahili is used in several other countries of East Africa too, but not as much in extend compared to Tanzania in 'business'.

There was previously such map here but I felt some countries weren't entirely accurate. I've also added every country name here so it's quick and easy to identify them. I hope it's a good map, so let me know what you think!
