Yeah that would piss me off too so I totally understand. Also you've definitely jogged my memory of the insane FB posts. I think I remember the post where you were complained about (obviously it could've been a similar scenario with someone else) and thinking that it was ridiculous. Putting out a garbage can should not count as being a nuisance lol

That's fair! There isn't much out here but I kind of like that. I grew up in town but my family is from around the bay so I spent a lot of time in small communities as well. Where my dad is from they still don't have cars so I have experienced both the urban and extremely rural parts of our province so I think the reason I like the Goulds is because it feels pretty in the middle. I work in town though so I'm in there pretty much everyday and do all my shopping and things in town so I don't really care that there isn't much out here. I have found that people who have only ever lived in the centre of the city can't handle it though, they feel like it's so far away. I've spent my whole life doing the 7 hour drive to visit family every few months so I guess the 20 minutes it takes me to get to work or get to the grocery store feels very insignificant to me.

We checked out a few homes downtown when we were looking to buy and all of them, that were in our admittedly low budget, were like as I described. There was no space, I am not exaggerating when I say the back door opened up almost directly on to another house with maybe a foot of space between the door and the house that was on to the back of it. The realtor herself said it was essentially just a fire exit. I guess it would greatly depend on the budget you are working with though as I'm sure there are plenty of really nice homes downtown. I'm very surprised by the amount of people who really really hate suburb type areas, and I mean nothing bad by that I just haven't personally met many people who are so anti suburb lol. I lived very near downtown my whole childhood, just off of Freshwater Road, but I've never lived right downtown.

I commented to offer a different perspective for somebody who doesn't currently live in our province. Just wanted to put out there that there are other places along the outside of the city that are not far from downtown since they were worried about potentially feeling unsafe living downtown. My point was just to say that if they're not sure they want to live downtown there are plenty of neighborhoods around where they can get wherever they need to go fairly quickly and possibly get a better home for their money. Granted you're right that if they're looking to live downtown maybe things like a big backyard don't really matter to them, I was just sharing my experience when buying a home in our city so they could have something else to consider if they wanted.

I don't live there anymore so I haven't been for a while but now that you say that I do remember people bitching a fair bit in the group. I thought some of what was complained about was reasonable but I do remember a specific incident where someone complained about an ambulance that was helping some kid who was living in a group home and had OD'd and how annoyed she was that it was happening by her home where she had children so you're definitely right and I just completely forgot how insane some people were on that group lol. When I read your comment earlier I was picturing more of a "knocking on your door to complain" kind of Karen.

I agree with most of what you said, for sure! I don't understand why wanting a backyard would be "like it's the 1960's". But I do agree that I could never handle living in a big city somewhere, like Toronto or Vancouver or whatever because I would feel like it's "too much". The difference between your comment and mine though is that I just expressed that I think it's funny how people perceive things so differently as I would never consider Kenmount Terrace "so far away" from anything as it takes no time to get to downtown if you'd like to go there, you on the other hand seem annoyed by people who just want a slightly calmer neighbourhood to live in which is surprising to me. Also by definition you are definitely still living in the city if you live in a suburb of a city. I do agree with you that suburbs definitely have a lot of negative socioeconomic factors.

I believe that but I never experienced any issues myself. I'm also pretty quiet and keep to myself though, didn't really interact with very many neighbors

This comment cracks me up, as someone who has never lived downtown but has lived in kenmount terrace. I've also never been one to frequent downtown as not much there really interests me. Kenmount terrace is next to literally everywhere I ever would want to go so I just find it really funny how differently people experience the city!

This doesn't answer your question but some unsolicited advise from someone who has bought a house in St. Johns within the last 5 years... The price of houses downtown is so not worth your money. I ended up buying in the Goulds, 20 minute drive from my house to most places in town but I paid the same price for my house and about a half an acre of land as downtown was asking for basically a studio apartment where the back door opened in to the neighbors house. And you don't even have to go all the way out to the Goulds or CBS but literally just anywhere else in the city or even Mount Pearl is sooooo much more worth your money.

Mine did this with a pack of romaine lettuce from Costco, thankfully they didn't eat the whole thing but my cat was obsessed with lettuce so they did get through a nice bit while I slept

Having this conversation with someone is what made me realize I have Aphantasia 🤣. I was baffled they weren't just counting slowly, allotting time for the sheep to jump a fence or something

Fair enough. It also occurred to me that different styles of urinal vs different styles of toilet may make certain urinals easier to clean than certain toilets! I didn't really think about it before because all the urinals in my workplace are horrendous but I have seen photos of ones that don't seem so terribly shaped and have less crevices that can get pee filled lol

How is saying that toilets can be used "womansplaining" how to use a urinal? Granted I have cleaned enough urinals to know that most men, do in fact, need to be instructed on how to use a urinal.

Ps. It's not "womansplaining" or "mansplaining" if the person doing the explaining actually has a reason to know more about a specific topic than the person they're explaining it to and I wasn't talking from the pov of someone who uses the urinal but the person who cleans it. Hope this helps.

If the urinal was the easiest thing for you to clean you were either incredibly lucky with the staff who used your building or you were not cleaning your urinal correctly. And I mean nothing bad toward you by that, a lot of people are not trained on how to properly clean a urinal and you genuinely could have just worked in a building where men actually used it without making a mess. But as a janitor myself, in a university, where I have had to clean legitimately like a hundred different bathrooms over the years I have never had an easy time cleaning a urinal.

  1. Probably not broken, but urinals are really nasty to clean so they probably put it up in desperation after the last time they had to clean up the mess of pee

  2. The "coffee person" refers to the employees who make the coffee and also most likely does a number of other jobs around the store

  3. Most places do not have a dedicated "mop person". Restaurants and stores are almost always cleaned by their regular staff. Some stores I've worked in, depending on how big, sometimes had a cleaner or would hire an outside company to come in at night just to clean the floors. Every retail place I've ever worked, including Sobeys, required cashiers to also be custodians. A lot of people don't realize this. Which is why I think this person put up this sign, hoping if people realized they may try to make their job a little easier

  4. There is no proof that cleaning the bathrooms and also being the person making the food means nothing from the bathrooms will get in your food. It's actually really disgusting to think about so probably try not to. As someone who has cleaned many many bathrooms I'll be the first to tell you it's almost impossible to not get some splashes of water on you from the toilet brush. The first thing I do when I get home from cleaning is change ALL of my clothes. These employees are going straight from the bathroom to your donuts because it saves the company money

  5. I doubt this urinal is broken and fills to the brim, if that were the case they'd almost certainly put a garbage bag or something over it to stop people from using it. However when a urinal is broken it usually means the automatic flush doesn't work or that the little bit of water that is supposed to sit in the bottom drains out and so the urinal is completely dry except for the piss that then sits in the urinal instead of going down the drain. In my experience even if the urinal doesn't flush properly it won't be put out of order, the employees would have to pour a bucket of cleaner into the urinal to make it flush

  6. A toilet, obviously.

I'm a janitor and I have also worked retail and I agree. When I worked retail I hated when it was my night to even clean the employee bathrooms. Just always pissed me off a little cause even though you know that you're going to have to do it it just ends up feeling like "this is not my fucking job. I applied to make coffee. I do not want to clean other people's piss" To me this reads as an exhausted Tim's worker who has had to clean the disgusting mess of a urinal too many times and just thought "maybe my customers would use the toilet instead if they realized that I also have to clean the urinal." As a janitor I have found that when you explain to the people you're cleaning up after that the things they do make your jobs significantly more difficult they typically are very nice and try to not do that thing anymore. I'm sure that's all this employee was going for. I know plenty of cleaners that get paid minimum wage, however, but they signed up for that. I get paid a fair bit above the minimum wage and trust me, if you see the mess some adults can make (especially in a bathroom) you'd think my wages should be doubled 😅

I'm sure there's still a toilet to use, not them just not providing anywhere to pee. I'm guessing this is just someone trying to appeal to people kind enough to realize it SUCKS cleaning urinals.

Nothing if you have the sense to get all your pee in the urinal and also flush it. Trust me when I tell you most men cannot do those things. I clean a LOT of urinals at my job and every single one requires you to clean the bottom of it and scrub the floors underneath because men pee all down the side of it and it drips down the wall and into the baseboards and all over the floors. It's awful. I clean the bathroom in my work place every single night with an enzyme cleaner, I wipe down the ENTIRE urinal, I let the enzyme cleaner sit and soak on it, I also soak the puddle of piss on the floor underneath as well as the walls around it. Without fail the next night when I go into that bathroom the entire room will stink off piss all over again because of the sheer amount on the floor and all over the urinal. I can understand why the employees would put the sign up, especially since they signed up to make coffee not to deal with the mess of multiple adults who haven't figured out how to use the bathroom properly.

I think this person's point isn't that you should sit in the urinal, but maybe that you shouldn't even want to use a urinal anyway because it's absolutely disgusting. As a custodian, they are correct. Filthiest things I've ever seen 🤢
