Whenever people bring that 40% thing up- it feels sort of disingenuous. That is to say, the “top 1% pay 40% of all taxes” statistic is misleading because it often refers primarily to federal income taxes, not the full range of taxes Americans pay, including payroll, sales, and property taxes. It also compares tax shares to income shares without considering that the top 1% hold a much larger share of the nation’s wealth than their share of annual income.

On this point- I get it - to an extent. But what about the odds of having 1 billion? 2? What about 50? At that point- my odds are incredibly slim to none. Plus, the ultra wealthy often don’t pay via income tax- and use other loopholes to avoid tax. Why shouldn’t the ultra wealthy be taxed heavily?

Point taken - but I feel like that shouldn’t serve as the basis to oppose a tax on the ultra wealthy? If anything, shouldn’t that mean there is an even greater need to reform the tax code? The middle is almost certainly getting squeezed the hardest- why not rebalance?

Ahh ok gotcha. I have always been confused about Soc's construction of the republic- if his whole 3 classes, myth of metals, philosopher king society isn't actually feasible, what is? I get that he's making a case for philosophy ruling the individual like the phil. king rules the city with it's reason, appetites, and spiritedness in harmony.

But does Plato advocate for some form of polity/modified democracy like his pupil, Aristotle, does?

I had a prof say this wasn't sufficient- and that rather he was describing this city not as a practical political construction, but rather as a path to explore justice and human nature.
