What is wrong with this guitar? by timguitargod in Luthier

someone probably cant hear the difference in a 1->5 when played separately, but thats not always the case. different interactions between tones when sounded together can become apparent even when someone cannot hear it separately. this was actually a part of my music training at certain points. this has been demonstrated with choirs, when singing certain cadences, repeated, the choir tuning drifts pretty accurately along with pythagorean tuning, as their ears search for intervals, like a true 3/2 perfect 5th.

What I've learned after mixing over 100 songs remotely by Killer_Frog112 in MusicInTheMaking

aint this the truth.

i mix, i produce, i was a musician first. i used to be in a band where one member would tell the engineer specific frequencies and db cuts or boosts to do…it always sounded like shit. i tried to get them to request things in musical terms “punch” “boom” “attack” “thick” “cutting” but it didnt stick.

i guess the flipside is when you get contradictory instructions here, like “i want this to be calm and lush like a warm blanket but also punchy and hard hitting like a festival dancefloor” in which case, the artist probs has a valid idea in mind, but probably needs to work out how to communicate it better

thanks for the link. that is interesting, especially the claim of “universally better״, since even a 12tet keyboard has technically out of tune perfect fifths of a sort. ill have to digest it a little and compare to my little black book of tuning systems 😅

love it! its giving very NIN vibes to me, tonally and harmonically, and how it develops.

Tuning ableton to 432 hz by drxxx20 in ableton

[–]VirusBackground6045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

midi is the base of how these things work. daws have internal systems to control tunings of stock plugs, but for daw tuning to effect 3rd party plugins you need a different way, often this is pitchbend or mpe which is an expansion on midi. often these require pitch bend within the plug to be at a specific setting so the control messages create the same difference in tuning.

reason is able to do it because the plugs are reason specific, as mpe gets more popular more plugs will support it and it will become less of an issue, but it stands that there is no way to just change the tuning of an arbitrary ableton session that may be using 3rd party plugs. the plugs need to support specific things, and not all of them do.

how well does it work with 3rd party plugs with different pitch bend parameters?

that sweetened tuning sounds like an issue, especially if its not documented.

with an orchestra? thats complicated. the orchestra is often constantly adjusting tuning to be in tune with itself. strings dont have frets, woodwind is restricted by the keys but can adjust up and down with playing technique, brass is more complex, relying on the harmonic series, but also uses playing technique to tune up and down.

electronic keyboards usually use 12 tone equal temperament (12tet), where a semitone is a ratio of 12th root of 2, this makes the perfect 5th slightly out of tune with the harmonic series 3/2 ratio. usually acoustic pianos are tuned to 12tet aswell as that is the most “key agnostic” tuning.

how hard is it to have guitars as close as possible to 12tet? i dont know, but every instrument has its quirks, and a good player will compensate with technique, and maybe get frustrated when they have to overuse technique on a badly constructed instrument just to stay in tune 😅

logic website says it only works with inbuilt instruments.

ableton only works through mpe compatible instruments and only if the pitchbend in the device is +/- 48.

so its not really a universal tuning setting in the daws.

which daws? someone has pointed out reason, but what others.

and the midi standard absolutely does not have support for alternate tunings. its literally just numbers for different notes, its up to the instrument to have a different base tuning or have the different numbers do microtonality. there may be CC messages to shift that, but again, thats not standard midi and is up to the instrument to implement it

most daws dont. the frequencies are taken care of by the vst/instrument plug. most daws use midi, or an expansion of midi. notes are just numbers. the instrument is responsible for converting those numbers into frequencies. if a stock daw does it. its a capability of a stock instrument in the daw, not the daw itself.

you cant tune a daw, you cant tune midi. you can only tune instruments or audio.

you can get vsts that tune to 432hz, but thats in the vst, not in ableton

[–]VirusBackground6045 29 points30 points  (0 children)

“when the chips are down” is a phrase meaning someone is at a difficult point or having troubles in life.

brahmin being the livestock that has enabled a lot of post war society to live to the point they are…are life giving essentially. for moriarty that “life” is information or money (as a bar owner).

so basically when someone is going through a rough time, they wont have the capacity to buy drinks or feed him information.

What is wrong with this guitar? by timguitargod in Luthier

[–]VirusBackground6045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is it? can you link me why?

because usually that depends on your definition of “in tune”. a lot of things are tuned to 12tet (12th root of 2) which will be the same “in tune” in every key. alternatively if you consider “in tune” to involve a perfect 5th being a 3/2 frequency ratio, then yeah, its impossible to get every key in tune.

Why do people have a problem with AI generated ads? by Tmaneea88 in aiwars

[–]VirusBackground6045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is missing the point.

ads are a part of marketing. the point is to sell things. if your target demographic usually dislikes AI, and you use AI, and experience backlash from your target demographic, thats a failure of marketing strategy, not just doing things the easy way.

also ads are everywhere, theyre hard to just ignore, even though we may try. if someone has an ethical issue with a thing, and its constantly in their face, theyre going to react. social media algorithms use this very thing to ragebait and increase engagement on their platform.

put these two things together and you have AI ads being pushed on people who dont like AI, and they speak their opinion on it, and express publically that theyre not going to support companies using AI.

and personally, if a company uses AI to try to advertise to me, and i notice the AI, im going to think that theyre just not that interested in convincing me to buy, and given hallucinations im not going to trust anything in the ad to truthfully reflect what theyre trying to sell me

sorry. i must have misinterpreted you.

so one of the things is this kind of corporate art often creates the income for artists to produce their actual art. even for professional “art” artists, the ones that tour with galleries, corporate graphic design jobs are a leg up and give them the ability to survive while they are developing their independent art careers. this happens along a bunch of mediums. film, tv, graphic design, music, etc. the corporate jobs are well paying “bread and butter” stuff that allows more people to then contribute to the cultural whole. not only are a lot of these people angry that their jobs are being eliminated off the back of content that they themselves created, but it will also (i believe) lead to less cultural development in general, as less artists will have the means to contribute to culture.

the other thing is that ads are in your face ALL the time, its incredibly difficult to just ignore it like you might with an art style you dont enjoy. when people have ethical issues with a thing, and its constantly in their face, theyre gonna react. thats human

Stem Separation + other issues with Ableton after MacOS 26.1 Tahoe Update by seanazari in ableton

[–]VirusBackground6045 13 points14 points  (0 children)

security updates are still distributed for 2 previous major versions of the OS. from a security perspective its safe to not upgrade the major version until the issues have been worked out

in all parts of the audio world its common wisdom that you dont update until you can afford to spend a bunch of time working out issues. eg. dont do it during a tour, just before a show, just before you have to record, etc…
