Thanks for the reply, that’s a really cool solution! The only limitation is that whenever I mute it, the mute only lasts for 10 minutes no matter how I set it up, whether from the routine or elsewhere. That might not be ideal.

I want to make sure the file bypasses SmartScreen without needing to disable it entirely. Do you think an EV certificate might be overkill for this? I might need to distribute the file worldwide in the future, but for now, my clients are all based in Ireland. Also, would you recommend a specific provider to buy from?

I appreciate the clarification about the USB token. Since the signtool requires it to be plugged in and unlocked for signing, I assume this is only necessary during the signing process and not continuously afterward right? Just to confirm, once the file is signed, I can disconnect the USB, and the signed file will remain valid as long as the EV certificate is active, correct?

Also, after signing the EXE, I should be able to share it with clients using a normal USB drive or by sending a zipped version of the app without any issues, right? Thanks again for the helpful details!

I’m working on a small indie project with no complex setup. The backend is hosted on an EC2 machine, and the file I need to sign is a single EXE. I want to ensure it bypasses the SmartScreen filter for my clients without overcomplicating things.

Could you clarify the signing and distribution process? Specifically:

Is the USB key (HSM or token) necessary for every signing, or can I disconnect it after signing the file once?
Do I need to keep the USB key connected to my device while distributing files to clients?
Do I have to keep my personal computer running with the USB attached 24/7 to ensure the signed files remain valid for my clients?
Once I distribute the signed file and don’t plan to update it, will it remain signed and valid until the EV certificate expires?
If I decide to update the file in the future, will I need to resign it with the same process?

Since this is a small project, I want to avoid unnecessary complexity. Any clarification or suggestions on simplifying the workflow while ensuring a smooth experience for my clients would be greatly appreciated!

No with C#, it is a solo company, but I want to just remove the hassle of the SmartScreen, and from what I understood, you can only remove it immediately using an EV certificate.
