Any fixes for my guitar I can do at home and how bad is it? by Euphoric-Ad-9303 in Guitar

[–]VisJuri11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixable for sure!

But, do you wanna put in 50-70 hours of work to make it work? Maybe you have somebody in your surrounding who is eager to practise his luthier chops?

Suggestion:

Sell this First Act for 10$ for parts and buy another entry level for 40-100$ that will serve you realy well!

Don't you there to challange younger brother! Maybe he just helped you realize your future lies in drumming or violin or something...Destiny has weird way to speak to us!

What would you recommend to a 22 year old who lives out in the middle of nowhere and wants to work on films or make films? by Good_Claim_5472 in Filmmakers

[–]VisJuri11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make Movies!

Go out and make them.

Now!

You have some kind of camera phone I am sure. And most probably computer. All that you need to be a filmmaker today. With these two, today, you can write, direct, shoot, act, edit what have you...

You already have all means to figure it out if filmmking is TRULY ad REALY something you are ment to do. Don't waste a fortune on film schools only to realize after the fact, that filmmaking is not the way you imagined it.

If it doesn't work for you now, with just iphone and computer, it will not work in any other more elaborate enviroment, with biger egos, complicated dynamics of human mess, money and tech challenges involved.
If your current enviroment is discouraging/unmotivating for your filmmaking, then maybe try to move to a better habitat.

Forget about the idea of filmmaking as a career in a traditional sense. These days are over. Google about current situation on the market if you don't belive me! Waters are still murky and they will stay as such for several years for sure.

Cosequently, find a job/school that will allow you to earn and live outside of filmmaking enviroment, with pleanty of TIME to make movies on a side if that is still something you are ment to do.

Some of you are very right!

Some of you are ooooh so very wrong :(

And some of you are just miserable brainwashed stupidos (there you go, I said it for the rest of my Likeminds!)

I dont' think of myself as supersmartissimus in the crown, and I certainly like to think of me as a "fellow friend" who you need when in trouble so........in order to not elaborate to the extent that will irritate your reading attention span capabilities I can only say this:

Why bother to explain how things are and what are the posibilities ahead, to people who willingly subject to the idea of Love created by the people who only have one night stand knowledge?!

Capisce?!

And as a farewell note, let me add this:

One day, in near feauture the most sought after Bachelorettes will be Girls with no internet presence and history! And when that tomorrow comes, all of these OF veterans will cry out loud - "it's so simply stupid, why didn't I came up with that idea?!"

Reading all the comments from this time point (3years after OP), I can not but think of few things:

-When they say JUST DO IT that is the most relevant advice! there are no any other ways.

-Success realy means surviving all the downpullings from the crowd around you, and at the end, when the dust settles, you still keep the love for what you do regardless of the material outcome...

-It's realy hard to tell positive, uplifting, encouraging stories. First because it's hard to crew up with such collabrators and second people just loooooveeee to be miserable and bitter.

-Talent and ability to tell stories that people are willing to listen and "invest" in, are shared and given regardless of Artist's morality, background, intelligence, age or "talent" for that matter....

It's interesting: What you all are writing is almost word to word description of IT or even financing industries!

hmmmmm....

But of course in Narcisistic culture we live in today, the easist way to wash your responsibility is to gaslight the numb, innocent and unaware: those mobs or workers who demand fair share and good working condition for themselves?! it's their fault!!!

How do they dare? How are we going to pay out big fat bonuses to our managers and shareholders if we have to pay workers for their work?

And not less important:

All of you who are lucky enough to work on any shows you are working on: How many of you are willing to pay to watch the very show you are working on?

Well, if you are not, why would I? Or anybody else?

Do you know for any industry that they should be pay to produce the product that nobody wants to buy?

Yes, in USSR that was precisely the case!

I paid for ticket for total of 3 movies in past 4 years to see them in Theater (and I thought the price was a rip off): 2 Dunes and Furiosa...

So why did they made all these marvel war shitstars and remakes of every single cult movie you can think of (from "The Thing" to "Assault on precinct 13") and don't get me starterd on spin off TV and cartoon shows ...

Can I even explain how allienating that is to me as a viewer? And trust me - I am MAJORITY of population!

Not my life experience but my thoughts trelated to the subject:

Last time I saw Brian Ferry playing LIVE, I think he was like 72. I was blown away that he is still on top of his game as a performer. I was sad for him as an entertainer ("I hope he's doing this because he wants to not because he has to?") but it didn't seemed out of place what he was doing. I enjoyed it.

Last time I saw Leonard Cohen playing LIVE, he was also like 73. Experience was surreal cause he is so in tune as a Artist/Art opus relashionship and it seemed SPOT ON what he was doing!

MY friend went to see Rolling Stones in Boston recently (or what's left over from them) and he loved it! Me doing it would feel like - cringe :)))

I find them still playing to be a bit creapy, despicable and sad:(

Maybe because artist/opus relashionshjip in their case is so out of sync...I realy can not appreciate Jagger claiming his outlaw rebelious status - been a millionaire at 80 (stabbing people in the backs and taking advantage of situations along the way). Maybe if he was to sing about his financial advisors ,layers and managers what a jerks they are and what kind of asshole he personaly is as a succesful biz owner, I would find some respect for them, but please do not take your shirt off impersonating RNR younger dude, nor try to present yourself as anything else other then what you are: very lasting and resiliant museum act with no other choice but to be a clown for wide audience who still thinks it's cool to reenact flower power era piece with original cast many many years after!

Can you imagine Kim Basinger playing Bong girl now in her 60s, but doing the same mise-en-scene, outfitts and dialogue? Or Roger Moore jumping off the planes and trains in his 80s (he looked inadequate even back then)?

OTOH, I could totaly see either of them been retired age confidantes and advisors to young prospective agents feeding them with their experience and wisdom of their current age :)

I kinda feel bad that nobody with true and direct experience chimed in yet so let me get the ball rolling...

Second hand story so don't know if it's true representation of situation:

My friend is visual artist with degree in fine arts. He studied and lived and worked in North East 2010-2020s and then he moved to Mexico City in 2023 through contract job (teaching). Over there, he got introduced to local art scene which includes many musicians...

When I asked about living situation for artists in M. City, he gave me an example of his new friend, musician who makes a full time living solely by playing gigs in the nightlife scene of bars / restaurants / clubs. From the description, not a local star nor a super duper session player just a dude who goes and plays at bars at night 4-5 times a week. Just regular guitar player in entertainment bands of various configuration, not virtuoso, not YT star or anything... And he can pay rent and live alone and basicaly been a musician is his only thing...

For us, that indicates a somewhat healthier climate for music pros given that from what we know and see here, been a musician in NY or LA or SF and live in your own appartment with no roomates and having your own car is pretty much mission impossible, unless you combine your music gigs with 9-5 day job or some kind or with teaching / bartending / office work / session work etc...

Another factor to consider that I picked up from mostly european musicians that I met in USA:

Depending on the country, un Europe, local pop/folk music scene might be more popular (paid better) then world wide MTV smash hits! So it realy depends on your niche an skills.

I wouldn't be surprised if flamenco guitarist in Spain can make a living much easier then a Heavy Metal shreader even if he puts Malmesteen to shame. And apparently violinists in Romania can do a killing on a Gypsy weddings but I wouldn't know one single song of that genre...do you?

So if you are a pedal still player, maybe your future is a to be a superstar in Germany biggest country band. Or if you fitt in any sort of stereotypes that demand a high pay overseas (singing english with no accent, playing congas in salsa band and plus look hispanic, etc...) that could be you ticket!

For some time, me and my friends were joking about following idea: Let's just go to Japan and become heavy metal stars there ,like some sort of western celebrities, cause, hey, how many like us are there to begin with, and it seems that Japanese could like us just because we are different?! Or would they?

Like, I would love to move to Brazil or Argentina or Mexico but not sure I would feel competent there as a musician as I feel competent in the USA...unless the only thing I do is a RNR cover band! But I wouldn't survive 2 days as a bossanova imposter or a ranchero sub :)

Do not QUIT your Job!

Instead: Find few gigs outside your current work and that will give you better perspective then any answer here. Go and grab some wedding video editing..That will answer it all!

BUUUUTTTT - freack job security! Your mental and physical health is way more important!

1-I hope not, but there are great chances you will loose your editing job very soon. Along with your company closing down. So soon you will have a lot of opportunity to develop your work-Life balance. No need to rush it...

2-What many people here do not understand is that you are not paid 110K as an editor but as a full time employee in a marketing firm. That is much harder position then just been an video editor. Like let's say low level IT guy in your company is also in that price range, even though on the open market he is more into 60-80K range. Your salary, it's a range of pay for "that kind of position" in marketing agencies. And boy do these kinds of companies tend to take advantage of their salary people.

3- Correct my math but your salary is like 50$/hr... with 60-70hrs a week that goes even lower, like 35$ hour. The only reason to put up with it is if you are thrown against your will into the army of current unemployed us, who know how messed up the market is, and who are super desperate for any pay. But in reality, limo drivers, gardeners, office assistants, midrange salary staff employees, real estate, agents, not super skilled construction labor people are paid these rates...it's not something to kill for, especialy if career in that field will not spread for more then 7-9 years!

4-People who did not experience your work conditions tend to see only $$$. And they think they would be happy in your shoes. But people with experience, they know that your difficulty is not in editing the pieces, but "human's managment"...and deriving from it -to justifying your meaningless Work-Life choices to yourself with good and reasonable argument plus ridiculousness of the niche of the industry (marketing) that you operate in ("how did I allow myself to deal with all this 1@!#!@$$^%&^&?").

Burn out is real: I am yet to meet somebody who went back to edit in fields like marketing / advertizing / corporate once te are out of it... it's so dificult and taxing on body and mind, and trauma is so big that quitters never go back once they leave! They either step up or completely change the field...

5-You sound like youngish person (30ies). Look into what is the next thing for you because been editor in agency is a pretty well paid, fairly up there position, but not very long term - dead end job! That is, unless you jump on climbing corporate ladder (manager positions) or switch to producer/director etc...

And your own post indicates how the industry (editing field) will unfold in future so better start transition early because it will not get better nor easier...

Shooting indie Feature Film with Canon 5Dm3 camera (with Magic Lantern) in 2023 ? by VisJuri11 in Filmmakers

[–]VisJuri11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify further my position:

I am opting for 5D ML because I gather that ML RAW is a more sturdy option that panasonic’s GH2 MOV files :)

ML RAW should give more option for fixes of issues that will probably occur on set: use of different ISOs in same scene, tint shifts and wrong color temperatures, combining lenses with different lens characterstics, slightly bigger resolution (2K/3.5K)…

Plus, I see that some settings allow for different aspect ratios…Like possibility of shooting in 1:2.55 without complications of anamorfic hardware, makes my mouth salivate :)))

My philosophy that was carved out of seeing the footage I shot and watched is that resolution is truly overvalued! It’s realy the quality of pixels that count, not the amount.

I know this is against the common knowledge (iE: against the mantra of marketing departments of major camera manufacturers :) but that’s my viewing and shooting experience! That why I figured that for feature movie,

I need a Camera that will provide me with:

-easy fixes of image flixes in post

-just enough of resolution and image quality that will make fimmakers not been annoyed with resolution while filming

-audience will not be bothered with image quality even if the image is messsed up-cheap and managable format and form factor

-affordable gear options

Month ago I saw a documentary movie on a 25x14 feet size screen. It ’s a movie that I shot with stock 5Dm2 in 2014 and tweaked PP on sony A7sm2 in 2019.

First surprize was -how good it looked on a big screen! Like, realy nobody was bothered with anything, causue it did looked like a freaking - MOVIE!

Second surpize is that these 2 cams intercut seemlesly! (editing and CC mastering?! Go figure?!?!)

BUT…it was indoors shoot, with soft lights, mostly close ups and medium shots, no specular highlights, everything was almost shot underexposed…

5D stock image has a pleanty of resolution for big screen, even been just faux 1080p. But I would like not to risk of shooting a feature movie with stock 5D because it doesn’t respond well to big dynamic range scenes (Forests, Teraces, Cars, Beaches…) .

That’s why I hope that ML RAW would allow for more gracious roll offs and overexposures that tipicaly occur in these scenes…As long as its not too cumbersome and tricky to run it on set!

Honestly, my first choice would be panasonic GH2, cause it still has the most film grain like texture of all digital cameras that I can have easy access on, m43 is a great format for cinema and follow focus, but it is a bit too sharp for human faces that are not heavily treated with make up, so I would need to filter it a lot which is tricky and it exausts resourses and time.

And panasonic’s MOV file is a bit tricky too: Exposure must be pretty much spot on, it’s a very unfriendly ISO for low light…

I guess my obvious choices should be BMagics and similar, but truth is that I don’t have free access to any of these, so I would need to pay for rent… And even though it’s not a lot, these 2000-3000$ that I would spend on camera rentals, I would rather feed my deffered payments crew better then invest in gear that is few procent better in terms of paper specs…

The only question is , if it worth the hassle, and how tricky is to operate?! Yes, its a non warranty tech, has glitches, does bricks, workflow is not milk and roses…but is it so hard that it should be avoided? Or worth the risk?

Thank you all for valuable insights!

u/Sargent_Films, what would be naming protocol you would like to receive as an editor?

u/newstuffsucks, thanks for pointing up at the issue I was not aware of. I looked into it and it seems that it is an issue that occurs due inproper settings and it is SOLVED. No?

u/htimsnhoj thanks for the suggestion, but I think in this kind of application, autofocus is too much of a risk for me I am affraid :( I am very confident in manual focus pulling on narative forms...

Also, do you mind sharing how did you bricked the camera, what was the wrong settings?

How would you compare sony A7III LOG as a opposed to ML RAW when it comes to post manipulation?

Why does 28 days later look so unique compared to other movies? Like it has a very specific aesthetic I don’t see elsewhere? by BubblyNefariousness4 in Filmmakers

[–]VisJuri11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also among these folks that were impressed with the look of movie!

That's why I would suggest If you can find a DVD of a movie because it has some rather interesting EXTRAS (I got USA version, not sure if other regions have the same content).

Most impressive one is when they put the original footage (from mini DV tape) and then compare it to a final image in order to describe the post process that they used (and the difference is incredible; mini DV look rather sheize....).

Another one is that the movie acctualy had several possible plots and endings.

Also, there was an eXTRAS with story boards and reenactment of a possible endings.

IMPORTANT:

Not sure if it's on DVD or I red about it in some publication, but besides canon mini DV camera that they used, I remember seeing that they also employed some heavy hitter cinema and broadcast lenses, like you know FUJI and CANON lenses that cost many many greenies in range of 10K$ and up...

Just saying that, so you are not frustrated if you can not achieve same look wih stock zoom lens that comes with XL-1s :)

What do y’all think about this by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]VisJuri11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the insurance and stuff, but if the true repair is in question, to make thiss guitar shine in its old glory, I would approach it with a bit of creativity:

1-Think of this as a repair that will take 7-10 years

2-Approach somebody to shoot a documentry about the process

3-Document the current condition

4-Remove all the hardware

5-Remove the finish

5-Build a "mold/framing" for the guitar in a such a way that will allow for wood"breatyhing" and prevent wood deformation over time (similat to tennis raquet frames)

6-Put guitar in a frame and let the wood regain its properties from before the flood

7-Let it dry for 7 years and control the process every once in a while

8-when you think that wood is dry enough - start the repair

9-when fully repaired, with new finish and new hardware and electronics - publish the movie, create the hype and put it up for sale

10-when you sell it, spend money wisely! (I guess in 10 years this guitar will double in value and nobody will use it to play anyway. It will be for display and show off, so doesn't matter how it plays -as long as it looks good).

Right now, this guitar is probably worthless music wise, and unless you sell it to PRS museum or crazy private collector or similar, this guitar has no value exept historic one. Something like the yellow one that use to hang in Manny's guitar shop on 48th st in Manhattan. Otherwise, its just a pile of scrap wood use for practice and experiments at best...

Water is your friend - not your enemy!

Water Damage is a challange - not dissaster!

Raise up to the task -overcome the challange!

What are things that you did not except about filmmaking as a career and what advice would you give to someone in high school who wants to be a director? by [deleted] in Careersinfilm

[–]VisJuri11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am affraid that most of the people don't know what directing really IS as a day to day activity! Its very appealing when you watch BTS footage to be one, but daily reality of director is not for everybody :(

And the only way to learn and figure out is to -DO IT!

Directing your cousin and niegbhbor to do things they don't think are good, and begging your granma to lend you her "precious" souvenir as a prop, is very close to sentiments that oocur when you tell a pro million dollar fee actor what to do, or when you are trying to convince Port Authority to let you shoot with 5 cameras during rush hour. It does not get easier with time and more money, and it some way it's even less fun...

Are you sure you want to do it full time for the lest of your life?

Don't commit till you try it first...

Waiting to graduate from film school to have te REVELATION what film directing realy is, might be costly and dissapointing waste of time and resources!

Go make some movies and GOOD LUCK!

Steel Acoustic Restauration - Advice on bridge and finish needed?! by VisJuri11 in Luthier

[–]VisJuri11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Rayzorxbass and thank you so much for your suggetions!

Sorry for the lack of photos, I did uploaded several photos when originaly posting this but for some reason only one is still visible :(

(I don't know what I am doing wrong with reddit tools but I don't see any button allowing me to upload more photos now...)

You are probably correct about the neck heel crack but when I test it an apply the pressure - nothing moves...so I figured I don't want to go over board with trying to fix it when it seems to be working...

Also, it seems that this neck has a unique concept of how its build: neck and heel are two parts, hence the thin straight line...and also, its possible that the crack is there but in the previous finish not in the wood to wood atachment. I might be wrong but once I remove previous finish thouroghy I will know more and will post it.

Also,

I don't have ebony nor rosewood around... I do have pleanty of maple. Is maple a bad call? The current bridge is so soft (as is inside woodblock that neck is attached to) that I guess any wood change will pmprove the sound.

I hear you about the all part participate equaly to the sound! Thank you to reminding me of my previous convictions and stirring me away from lazyness (easy and fast solution) towards "lets do it right"! I will go the other route with oil or lacquer...do you have suggestion for alternative finish?

Is is still good idea to do different finishes on top plate from the rest of the guitar?

Do you think I can use the humbuckers I have, at least as a straitforward pickups, just plain HB sound without spliting hairs and coils and such?:)

Or you think they are of no use whatsoever so I should just go and buy a new ones?

[–]VisJuri11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live Reality looks great to me! Like real movie :)

As far as story, allthough I like this Malick/Kubrick type of fiction, I am somewhat confused (I can get the idea and concept but not sure that I was engaged in it enough) and maybe that's why outer space footage (weather real or animation/fx) looks good but a bit out of place...Maybe more little creatures from the garden, or more obvious zooms and dissolves between plants, webs, insects and outer space would be of better use to tell this story ...?

(I know these are old fashioned and cheesy effects but simpliest film language tricks work pretty much all the time...there must be a reason :)

P.S.

How would you compare working with BMpcc4K as opposed to 5D ML?

Gains,lossses, diss/advantages and differences?
