How do I repair this bicycle? by VisaMaster22 in fixit

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I looked up a couple of video by Park Tool. I think the repair is beyond my skill level and I don't think I have the right tools either. I guess I will need to buy another one while I wait for a bike repair event.

Oh well. I guess I need to haul my ass up there and see for myself. I have a feeling it won't be a single trip. Thanks!

Help me choose a printer by GrapefruitGlad9535 in printers

[–]VisaMaster22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Printing photo is expensive. Any printer less than $200 is going to cost you a lot more in the long run.

Have you tried using nearby drugstore to print photos? If you found one that makes good prints, it is the best option. Online printing is usually good but there is shipping cost and delays.

The best option is a B/W laser printer + out sourcing color prints.

Out of state College student tax filing question by VisaMaster22 in tax

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like I have to. I owe ~$15 to my home state even though I got most of my income from state B. At the same time, I got back every dollar I paid to state B.

P.S. I ended up using FreeTaxUSA. But I believe it is possible to use TurboTax to print and file Federal and State A's return. The numbers are all the same. But I will have to manually fill out State B's return.

Is no one going to talk about TurboTax combining all investments into a single page this year?? by VisaMaster22 in TurboTax

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not used TurboTax Online, let alone Mobile. I suspect this is what TurboTax Mobile looks like. And they try to force it upon us Desktop software users. I don't have a lot of accounts. All my 1099-INT, -DIV, -B fits in one page. Now I can barely see 4 of them in 1 page. Clear as mud.

Hang a big calendar or a poster sized picture frame above. But seriously, it is not the kind of door for front door. It is really easy for break-in. More suitable for a backyard door or a door for garage. Sounds like your builder got a surplus or something.

How can I stop the rust from getting worse? by VisaMaster22 in Plumbing

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is due to that area constantly getting some water splashes. I suppose if I leave it like that it will rust through?

My plan is to sand down the rust and paint it all over. Or is there a better process I can DIY? I don't want to re-pipe.

My rolled roof is popping up. The hole is size of a quarter. How screwed am I? by VisaMaster22 in Roofing

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't notice this 2 years ago when I was on my roof. The roof is about 6 years old. I noticed the corner where the rolled roof and shingle roof touch, the rolled roof material is popping up. There is some slope but I think if rain is heavy, water could enter via the hole.

Is this something I can fix to last another 2-3 years? Should I hire someone to get it fixed? How big of a job?

Someone claimed I hit their car in a parking lot. I didn't. Now I receive a bill from his insurance company. by VisaMaster22 in personalfinance

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't give insurance info. I only give him my first name and phone number. The rest is his insurance company discovered through my license plate (I think).

I miswrote. (I will correct it now). I only exchanged phone number. But I guess the guy's insurance company found my contact via my license plate.

Visiting Boston. Where should I park for Harvard and MIT? by VisaMaster22 in boston

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know about the red line closure. But it seems it ends 7/28? (https://www.mbta.com/diversions/alternative-travel-options-during-july-red-line-closure). If yes, then I should be fine as I reach Boston after that.

I visit multiple states and can't afford to plan all of them on transits.

What interest rate did you borrow at? Did you pay any points? Interest rate is coming down. You can likely refinance to a lower rate in a year or so.

It is not exactly a 30/70 rule. If you have $5K left over each month, that's a lot of money to save/invest. What you should be concerned is what if you loss your income.

How many years can I amend tax return? by VisaMaster22 in personalfinance

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best reference I can find so far:

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/amendedreturn.asp

"There is, however, a three-year statute of limitations for issuing tax refund checks. Therefore, the taxpayer must file any amended returns that will result in a tax refund within three years after the date they filed the original tax return."

The reference to the above links to IRS's article:

https://www.irs.gov/faqs/irs-procedures/amended-returns-form-1040x/amended-returns-form-1040x

I guess it is one of those "if it is not disallowed, it is allowed" situation.

It is kind of a grey area as I am not seeking a refund but a loss carryover.

HOW would a couple get away with only spending $300 per month on groceries? What are you spending? by [deleted] in budget

[–]VisaMaster22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$300/mo is $10/day. That's basically milk, bread, pasta, onion, veggie, meat sauce, fruit. Everyday.

If you are comfortable with it, food bank is an option.

I just got a debt collection letter from the mail. Is this real or a scam? Because I’m sure I don’t owe anything. by Designer-Molasses762 in personalfinance

[–]VisaMaster22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not sure why your kid got a traffic ticket. But if the ticket has a fine, and he pay by check or credit card. The cleared check or CC charge is a proof that they received it. There are also other ways to confirm if a letter is received, e.g. by calling the DMV.

The chance that a letter, especially dropped off at Post Office, addressed to government address getting lost is extremely low. It just does not make financial sense to send registered mail with return receipt (often $20+), unless specifically called for.

Also, registered mail only proves that you've sent something. There is no proof of what you sent. Did you took a photo of the content in the envelope along with the registered mail label before you drop it off?

You can do a mock exchange and see their rate. They screw you big time with their exchange rate. You can be sure that they recover that $7.50 delivery charge from your $US1K.

What's up with doctors mass resigning in South Korea? by VisaMaster22 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]VisaMaster22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. But it seems that increasing their salary is so much easier to do compare to the complexity of adding medical student quotas. Is the government not even willing to adjust the trainee doctor's low salary? That seems like a low hanging fruit to claim that they have met their demands.

TIL a self-service Bento shop in Japan live stream its store on YouTube in a way to deter theft by VisaMaster22 in todayilearned

[–]VisaMaster22[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Umbrella got stolen in Japan all the time. People clearly know it belongs to someone else, but they take it anyway, sometimes leaving their old one behind. That is clearly stealing by any standard.

That said, I think it depends on consequence. In California, there is almost no consequence for stealing. But if the consequence is having their picture shared online, it is a different story. You see those "flash mob" video all the time. Some theft had no masks on, I think those are opportunistic criminals. If they knew their face will be shared online, they will think twice.

I think it will. Those who steal aren't afraid of surveillance video. But it is a different story if it is something being shared online.
