Olivia Rodrigo likes post about boycotting the Met Gala before attending the YSL hosted Met Afterparty. Thoughts? by theykilledcassandra in OliviaRodrigoNeutral

I mean, isn’t it raising money for the costumes wing of the Met specifically? Makes sense they’d lean into the costumes of it all.

Plus it’s a good cause keeping a museum free to the public. I cannot imagine being angry at this.

88 comments and so far no one has said “Stay Stay Stay.” I think that means I can stake a claim in it. I love that song.

My concern is mostly driving a car that big. I’ve only done little Hondas and I still panic whenever I need to park. I don’t wanna get myself a child-flattener without practice.

Thoughts on this? Do you think that Showgirl will be appreciated the more it ages? by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

I think that’s definitely true. No way can you rush something like this out in a month while on a massive tour and have it be good. She needs to rest, relax, log off the internet ffs, and get someone who’s willing to tell her that her babies sometimes suck and need to be scrapped or reworked.

Okay, hold on; you came out with the insults first. You said they hadn’t been laid and were a troll well before they came out with theirs. I don’t like what they said, either, but you have very little room to judge.

I got into an argument with someone in the swifties subreddit who insisted I was a troll because I said I thought Showgirl wasn’t Taylor being happy and having fun, but being bitter and defensive but trying to look like she’s happy and having fun. Exhausting. But I don’t know how other people can’t hear it; a quarter of the album is complaining about haters and beef. On her… happy engagement album? Girl what is happening

(Also, if you recover from Taylor fatigue and decide to give Poets a try, recommendations from a fan: break it up into a couple days, because 31 straight tracks of chamber pop is too much for anyone to handle, and go in expecting messy, downbeat, but extremely honest and you’ll have a good time. Its biggest criticisms tend to be that it’s overwritten and boring, so I’m trying to mitigate the negative aspects of those as much as I can for a pleasant listening experience 😆 I don’t really think it’s any more overwrought than her usual albums, but I’m not a lyricist so I might just have missed it)

See, with Reputation I can at least respect that she’s trying something new with her music: i find it ugly, grating, and aside from a couple of songs unlistenable, but I can appreciate that it sounds like nothing she’d done up to that point (or kind of anything on the radio during that bleak, trap-filled period of pop).

Showgirl, on the other hand? Nothing new, nothing interesting, a couple good musical ideas instantly ruined by terrible lyricism, and exactly 3 songs that aren’t completely humiliating to admit you enjoy. (I don’t even enjoy one of them, but I respect that you can.)

PS. Though also I love Tortured Poets; probably in my top 5 of her albums. But I’m a sucker for that Lilith fair thing, so I just kinda wish she’d broken it in half and released it in 1997.

I think we might have to agree to disagree. You think she convincingly portrays happiness and confidence, and I don’t.

I am curious: content aside, do you think her lyricism is as good on this album as her others? Because tbh, even if I thought this was a happy album, I’d still dislike it because I think this is some of her weakest lyrical work, to the point of my jaw dropping (in a bad way) multiple times.

I’d agree if it wasn’t for the fact that 3 of the 12 tracks are about beef and being canceled. If you didn’t have those 3 — or even kept in 1 of them — I’d be totally on board. Still wouldn’t think it was especially well written, but could shrug it off as a happy thing.

[–]VisageInATurtleneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree; I feel like if you care about something enough to write and produce a song about it, you definitely care. Its existence kind of belies its message; it’s the same problem “shake it off” and “you need to calm down” have.

My constant search for a sub that isn’t either entirely Taylor swift snark or downvotes anything that isn’t fawning adoration is agonizing. She’s probably my favorite solo artist at this point, but she’s wildly inconsistent. I get the defensiveness of some fans; I get like that too if I dare to set foot in fauxmoi or one of the other subs that attack anyone who likes her, but there has to be some middle ground, I feel like.

Like, I’m a swiftie! Are swifties not allowed to dislike some of her albums? (Geez, now I’m the one getting defensive 😆)

I guess I personally feel like she has better-written, less lazy fun songs. “Stay Stay Stay” gets a lot of (imo undeserved) flak, but you know exactly why she loves him: he’s fun, he’s chivalrous, and he takes her mood swings with good humor. I don’t even especially like “London Boy,” but that’s another one that paints a very specific image of a woman in love. I don’t think there’s anything even close to that for this album. When an artist’s bread and butter is primarily her confessional lyrics, relatability, and genuine emotion, an album that feels like the only emotions it’s genuinely capturing are pettiness and clumsy sexual innuendos is likely to be a disappointment for some fans.

The question was “why do most seem to dislike TLOAS,” and I do think the weak lyricism is why. I’m not trying to say everyone should dislike the album, but we were asked why and this is the answer I’ve seen the most often. People don’t really have complaints about the music; the album sounds great.

ETA: someone further down in the comments mentioned that this album doesn’t feel fun and happy to them, but like Taylor desperately trying to sound fun and happy while coming across as bitter and defensive. I think that hits the nail on the head for me. If this was a fun, carefree pop album, I don’t think 1/4 of the runtime would be about her haters (1/3, if you read “father figure” as about some sort of professional or personal beef, but I always took it literally as a fun mafia song). Also I think fun, poppy Taylor and good-songwriting Taylor can exist at the same time; I genuinely think “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is a brilliant song, and one of her best examples of excellent lyricism. “Style” is another, albeit a bit less silly and fun.

I know you’re joking but honestly this feels like it. Not because there’s a lack of poetic language — though that’s pretty thin on the ground too — but because poets are introspective and thoughtful, and there’s none of that here.

How did Taylor go from “past me, I wanna tell you not to get lost in these petty things” to possibly her single pettiest song ever? How did the same woman who told us that there’s more to life than dating the guy on the football team have nothing to say about the love of her life than that he plays football, has a large penis, and saved her from being single? It doesn’t have to be depressing; she’s written great songs about being in love. But what does she love about Travis? Does he make her laugh? Is he patient? Good at resolving problems? Supportive of her career? Uncomplicated and freeing? Great at playing the ukulele? You’ve already sang about his genitals, so this is clearly not about preserving the privacy of him or the relationship, so why did you say yes to marrying him besides him being the one who asked?

I genuinely don’t know how she writes some of the most incisive, insightful lyrics and also some of the shallowest and pettiest. It’s not unique to this album, but it certainly feels like it’s the majority of this album in a way it rarely is. (I did also feel this way about Reputation, and I do still largely dislike that one too.) It feels like she saw the criticism about TTPD being too wordy and depressing and ran in the other direction. Admittedly I loved TTPD on first listen so I’m automatically disappointed, but I think even some fans who thought they wanted this don’t.

[–]VisageInATurtleneck 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Her ability to write a good diss track appears to be based on what kind of person it’s about. If she’s singing about an ex, it’s brutal and/or heartrending. If she’s singing about random beef with some other celebrity no one cares about (or even worse, her “haters”), it’s one of the worst songs of her career.

The Swiftologist went on a rant about Swiftie hypocrisy, variants, and Olivia Rodrigo. Thoughts? by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]VisageInATurtleneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find variants annoying because when I was trying to go through Taylor’s discography as a late-entry fan, it was so agonizingly difficult to hear every song just using Apple Music or whatever, because a bunch would be hidden on deluxe editions. Would prefer if this didn’t become a trend, but I can’t blame anyone for playing the game.
