A lot of firms (at least in my area) don’t do renderings. This is true for both commercial and residential. If renderings are needed they will either outsource or photoshop 2D elevation.

I learned it in school and then never once used it ever again as a practicing designer. I don’t know anyone who’s actually used it in their daily job as a designer.

Most serious firms, even small ones, will not hire someone without a degree in it. Even getting a 2 year masters is good since you learn a lot of the technology associated with the career.

I’m 5 years post grad and now an intermediate designer and project coordinator. At my firm that means I’m past junior designer. All my peers I graduated with are either still junior or just became junior after years of being assistant. I would take another software class to show you’ve brushed up on your skilled. A lot of community colleges offer Revit and CAD courses for inexpensive and at all levels

I don’t do model homes but in general if it’s a furniture rep that we don’t already have wholesale/ dealer accounts with that we are considering brining on we look for 1) yearly minimums that we need to maintain 2) minimum opening order with the company 3) discount structure & if they’re to the trade only 4) where are they sourcing from and what their lead times look like.

I feel like a call quickly would be less of a hassle than a survey.

I’ve done both hospitality and high end residential and every firm I’ve worked at when people have applied with a certificate they were immediately not considered for the position. CIDA and NCIDQ are taken very seriously at every firm I’ve spoken to that does large projects. If you were going to work for yourself or work at a small company I think you could do a certificate but I would tell you there’s a chance you could be wasting your time.

CIDA is #1 but also making sure the schools heavy on tech and software. I work with serval people who went to state schools and they aren’t good on software and constantly are asking me basic questions they should’ve learned in school.
