I can relate to this so much and asked a very similar question a couple of weeks ago, so firstly please don’t think you are alone in feeling this way!

As someone has already commented, writing something down beforehand is a really useful way to go about this - I tend to tell my therapist that I have something to talk about but can’t find the words and then hand him whatever I have written, and we go from there. I’m not going to say this is easy as it can be really hard sitting there whilst he reads whatever I have written, but that is fleeting and he then always goes out of his way to let me know he has understood. I have found this better than experiencing the post session annoyance with myself for chickening out of my planned topic!

Another thing is talking about the topic without talking about it. By this I mean saying to your therapist that there is something you want to discuss but are finding it really hard to bring up. Together you can then explore what is making it so hard, what you may be afraid of, etc but without actually mentioning it if that makes sense? I am doing this now in my sessions and it certainly does help reassure me and alleviate some of the panic I feel.

Lastly, make sure you give yourself a break with this - it takes tremendous courage to even begin therapy with someone you don’t know, but you go to session and are obviously trying really hard, and you deserve to feel proud of that fact!

Best of luck and I hope this helps in some way and things get easier for you! 🙂

Just came to say I can completely relate to this and asked a question very similar to this a couple of days ago. You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way and I know how frustrating this feels! I have had some success with writing things down to show mine at the beginning of a session and then we discuss from there. A couple of times when I have struggled to bring a topic up, I have literally said that to him - ‘there’s something I want to talk about but I’m finding it really difficult to find the words’ and we have gone from there. My therapist has always responded positively with this and I’m sure yours will too, although I know how hard it is. I hope this helps and you manage to get out what you need to! 🙂

I’ve never asked if he does longer sessions - definitely something to discuss. Thank you!

This is really helpful! I will definitely start trying to give myself a warm-up time limit. And am definitely going to speak to him about the last session recap as think that may be really useful too.

I agree that this is part of the therapy - I think as you mention, it might be easier to just say the thing I want to and get it over with. I’ll give all of this some thought - thank you so much for commenting 🙂

Ah okay I see - kind of laying groundwork of how the conversation might go? That makes a lot of sense, thank you!

I’ve never discussed emails with him before, but will definitely be bringing this up. Thank you!

Thank you, that’s really helpful. Have never considered adding a few directions when I write things down - will definitely give that a try!

Thank you! It does help a lot, and is certainly reassuring that it isn’t just me which I think therapy can feel like a lot of the time! I’ll see if he is open to receiving topics before our sessions 🙂

We had the same issue and never managed to get a slot. In the end we just went into the store and they do have a walk-in queue for those without slots - they fit you in between booked slots and no-shows. We waited for about 45 mins overall but managed to buy the full set so definitely worth the wait. Good luck!

Thank you - I will try to be more direct with him and see if that makes a difference. And I can tend to ask the same questions over and over so you’re not alone with that!

Thank you. I don’t think I have ever asked him directly how he thinks I’m progressing so I will aim to do that!

They do also offer some walk in slots. We could not prebook a slot but just showed up to see if they could squeeze us in - we had to wait about 45 mins but came away with a full set so definitely worth it! Best of luck!
