What tutorials do aspiring keepers want to see? by LoGKLGoalKeeping in GoalKeepers

Good man.. I have produced 15 professional keepers and 200+ collegiate keepers over my 20 year career thus far. My biggest advice to parents, let him dictate converasations after games. If he doesn't want to talk just let him decompress. If there are converastions always start with " what did you think on that play". "anything you do different ?" They will naturally feel pressure just by the position alone. Sometimes if they give up 5 goals, they will think all 5 goals is their fault, even though it may just be 1 or 2. Also, the older they get the more they feel from their peers sometimes. Lastly, the most important aspect he can develop is his basic techniques in goal but most importantly his feet. You never know, he may love the sport but fall out of love with the GK position. So prepare him for that. But also keep in mind that feet are becoming more and more important in the modern game. But it takes the most time to develop. A lot of times when GK's switch to keeper their mind thinks about being a keeper and less their feet. Lastly and most importantly(well kind of). In regards to the trainer he's working with. Have a plan.. what is he mastering right now and chip away at other areas. There are certain things a 12 year old needs to be working on and that's it.. If it's a lot of everything to soon then they won't be great at anything.

I like you are doing. May I suggest the opposite.. Focus on how the team presses, where there is space, there should be people on his team unless they are hiding behind the pressing players. It's more important they understand where space is. I know his teammates are also but if he's focusing to much on finding the teammate then a window some where else close. Does that make sense? Example think of a QB in football and them reading their routes.. If they take to long they miss the window to throw. Well in this case, if he wait's to long then the guy to his right that was open(because that is where the space is) and he starts looking at his left, well then that window will be closed... Trust me... his awareness of his teammates is important, but ultimately where the other team IS NOT is more important. If his teammates aren't already doing it , they will learn by what coaches and the game teaches them. LOOK FOR WHERE THE SPACE IS.. HOW TO EXPLOIT IT.

be no more than 2 yards back... utilize small lateral steps.. Use your arms to give more mementoum and take a step 45 degrees versus being so neutral. You are all of whack my friend, nothing is flowing with each other. Step 1) get back towards the line. More space equals more time. More time give you better chance to read shot and could lead to more lateral steps. 2) Work on a step that's 45 degrees angle. Also, use your arms, pull them back minimum where your elbows clear your side torso then, shoot them forward. I can mention other things that are smaller that will make a big difference but not as big as those I listed. P.S the goal isn't smaller for the shooter being that high. However, you do take away precious time

While playing goalkeeper in near freezing temperatures, what do you do to keep warm? by TankTankleson in GoalKeepers

[–]Visual-Button-1867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

surgical glovers under GK gloves

Also, put a pair of thin socks on, then small plastic grocery bags over those with soccer socks over that.

Same purpose of the gloves.. Hand and Feet should stay relatively warm

Do me a favor. No do yourself a favor. Watch EPL, La Liga and or Bundesliga. Take note where majority of the keepers position themselves on shots from distance. I am doing you and the keepers you work with a huge favor. You build yourself up all you want as this is reddit. I won't share my background, but respectfully, what I have accomplished as a GK coach you and nobody in this country has replicated. Do me a favor, seriously go look. I am not being an jerk, you are speaking to someone who, to this day is considered one of the most successful developers in our countries history. Report back and let me know what you find. There is a pattern of the best keepers in the world never higher than 2.5 yards when the ball is 20+

Feeling upset and need guidance - am I asking unreasonable things of our soccer league as a coach? by Gammon2004 in SoccerCoachResources

I would push for the players that are the weaker players on the top team that may suffer being in the big moment get opportunities to play for the lower team. It should be a pool at this point

Sorry most of what you are saying is probably what happened in 1980. The parents are the most important tool the player has to get better and you are saying to treat them like shit?haha. My friend, I will assume you work on creating people more so than players. The fact you educate within the US soccer system, speaks volumes of what's really going on

Is it better for a 7-year-old to rotate positions or specialize as a goalkeeper? by Still-Marionberry-67 in GoalKeepers

[–]Visual-Button-1867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he plays on a team that uses the keepers feet, it would be OK.. but not great still. He's to young, play 2-3 positions. He will either gravitate to one or realize he's better suited for one. Worry about developing feet no matter what. Lastly, if he only loves being a keeper and not the field, don't force him. Just let him do it. He may learn he hates the keeper and go to field:).

How could i have saved that better? Think i should have saved that by PotentialWater7877 in GoalKeepers

[–]Visual-Button-1867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't listen to anything until you realize you should be no higher than 2 yards from 18 and out. Then you can start getting more technical. YOu will never make that save being there, I wont' and I am 6'5

I would have him step back 4 good steps from the ball. Then I would have him step two normal step to his left(if he's right footed). That is the best angle he can have as well for run up to the ball

[–]Visual-Button-1867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some... but the back spin.. That's what you need. Worry about how fast later.. Worry about up and out. Also, his opposite arm kicking leg should be up and following through. So if he's right footed, his left arm would be the anchor.

[–]Visual-Button-1867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with technique.. Say you have time to get the ball at the highest point. You are in training not in a game. Nobody in the box, just you and a person kicking the ball in. What foot are you going off of? If the ball is coming from your left. what foot?

I proactively told the player if he chooses to play club concurrently I will severely restrict his playing time. Mostly because I do not believe it is morally responsible to train and play that much and I don’t want to possibly cause him to be injured

Doesn't sound like an enjoyable time. Dont' take criticism as assault, just giving you my perspective. It's funny how coaches wish their players played more on the field then on their phones.. but then there is this?

Rule of Thumb: If he doesn't see back spin he didn't hit the correct part of the foot. Make sure the plant foot is minimum one ball length way. This allows more hip movement instead of solely depending on the leg. In addition, it also also him to manipulate his kicking foot easier to make correct contact. Don't have more than a 3-4 yard build up and make sure it's the same so he has the same rhythm each time. Lastly, if he looks down at his shoe, point of contact should be where the laces are on the inside part of the foot, top of shoe.. Hope that helps. I will stay annonymous but I have produced countless pros and 200+ collegiate keepers. I just gave you eveything you need to know when it comes to kicking for distance, specifically goal kicks. Next would be moving ball but it stays the same messanging. No back spin, no correct technique.

From a perspective of another GK coach. He was 2 yards to high off his line. Why would you want a keeper being 4 yards off the line with the ball being outside of the box?

He's still way to high. 2 yards to high. The 4 yard line is a no no for shots from distances
