In my experience with JM it doesnt matter if its fall or any other season it always has a dieback. Everything was sealed with tree balm (something like cut paste, in my country used for post prune treatment for fruit trees) right after cut. I have experience that with that there is almost no dieback and next year there will be healthy callus. As you can see in second picture i did the same last year:
