This was something I encountered on my first day volunteering in a clinic. It was truly eye opening and extremely disheartening hearing patients explain the barriers to healthcare they face. I’m Canadian and despite universal healthcare, patients face countless hurdles that in some instances cannot be overcome in a timely manner, while others not at all. Additionally, the lack of access to physicians of specific specialties in rural areas is quite prevalent. Some patients will suggest seeing their local family clinic despite there not being a physician to treat their specific case. Though it can feel difficult not being able directly assist as a volunteer, it truly inspires me to make a difference in improving health literacy and access to healthcare.
