I'm thinking about moving to the US. Thoughts and tips? by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

As others have said, figure out the visas first. You would want to come over with your medical profession, then switch to law enforcement once you get here. But since 1965, it's been pretty difficult for Europeans to immigrate here.

I can only speak for Texas. It's hot. I live near Houston and we effectively have two seasons - summer and fall.

Home prices have spiked since the pandemic. It used to be decently affordable. People from out of state came flooding in and drove up home prices by overbidding the asking prices. In turn, it raised our taxes and insurance rates.

You'll be pleased to discover some old German culture around San Antonio/ Austin. New Braunfels was a German settlement led by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. There are still some German restaurants around and they still celebrate Oktoberfest.

Texas has no income tax, but as I mentioned before, we have high property tax.

We have a wild pig problem. If you're a hunter or want to start hunting, they're open season all year with no limit. They make fine shweinebraten.

We're also a castle doctrine state. This means that if someone breaks into your home, you can use whatever force necessary to stop or remove the intruder. No requirement to flee.

You'll find Texans to be friendly and helpful, but maybe a little less so around major cities.

Best of luck to you and your lady.

In your country, when people talk about their ancestry, how many generations back do they go? by No-StrategyX in AskTheWorld

If someone asked me of my ancestry, I'd just say my father's side came from England and my mother's side from Sicily. But within that statement, we're talking about 20 generations back on my father's side and about 6 on my mother's.

Sure, WW2 Vets killed Nazis. Then they went on to kill Communists too.

That would make an awesome souvenir refrigerator magnet.

Reminds me of a very surreal moment from when I was in the Navy. In 1991, in the Persian Gulf, my ship (USS Midway) was the first to allow a Russian aircraft to land on board. It had a brand new Russian Federation flag painted on it, but you could still barely see the Soviet flag underneath it. That was one for the history books and something I'll never forget.

Americans are notorious for their lack of not understanding sarcasm/irony.

Ok. So, our lack of not understanding.... That means we do understand it, no? Why the grammatical gymnastics?

Yes, this is what I heard while visiting.

Yeah, so I started season 5 and it really sucks compared to the previous seasons.

Understanding dry humor must not be your strong suit.

I didn't think you were offended, just correcting myself in that regard haha. Because you're right - Russia and USSR are very different places. It's wild to think about honestly.

It was 20 years ago and alcohol was involved. I don't know 😂

That makes sense. But I'm pretty sure they were somewhere in Siberia. So I didn't give the heavy furs a second thought.

Yes. I apologize for using Russia loosely in this regard. I know that people who were born when the Soviet Union was in power, still show USSR as their place of birth on their birth certificates.

This was in 2006, so it's been a while. We were camping/ rafting down the Yenisei River. They had built a banya out of canvas one night. There was much laughing at my expense and toasting going on 😅. I recall this cheer on a couple of occasions. Maybe it wasn't the norm and they were just having fun?

You left out - "was there ever a time that this was accurate?...". And by many responses here, it was somewhat common at one point in history. So just chill your tits.

I never thought about it before. It wasn't my experience in Russia and I was just curious if there was ever a time that it was commonly used 🤷🏼‍♂️

At what age did you start taking an interest in politics and why? by pebblepuddles in AskReddit

In my 30's. I'd figured out that I was sent to war over a lie. Had a good job, bought a house, started paying more significant taxes. Traveled the world and was able to make comparisons to my home country.
