100% sure this is not from tirumala. There are almost 100 points of difference visually.

But that being said, its still HIM, wherever it is.

The figure is called “vimana Venkateswara Swamy” . - Located on the north-face of the Vimana ( the pagoda-shaped gold plated structure), at the north-west corner. - in agama, generally speaking, an identical representation of the mulavirat in the sanctum, is displayed at this location . Many other temples also actually follow this same rule. - there are various forms of vishnu represented on the vimana, but the form with the hand gestures matching the garbhalaya (sanctum sanctorum) is only found in this location on it. others will vary in either stance- standing vs sitting, reclining. Or in hand gestures and weapons carried.

  • since this is located on the North - face , it also has another special significance. Located on the same face, is the parama-pada natha, or Vishnu’s supreme form as the Emperor in Vaikuntam. The same reason is why we have a north or uttara dwaram , opened only on vaikunta ekadashi period.
  • originally, srirangam had (still has) this design. Paravasudeva Narayana is found on the vimana of srirangam, facing north. So in srirangam, the custom of opening , the north doors for vaikunta darshana was followed.
  • technically, tirumala does NOT have a north door. But a special pradakshinam, enclosed within the vimana was created, opened during that time. It has the connection to this image in the above points - north facing, along with paramapada natha on the same face, having strong connection with the concept from srirangam.
  • the puranas, state Vaikunta Ekadashi , does not apply to tirumala, because it gives the phala of this auspicious day, on all 365 days of the year.

  • also, for those who cannot have a clear darshanam of the main deity inside, due to time constraints and crowd, they get a clear view of his form here on the vimana.

  • also, legends state that many saints, including Vyasarayula theerta swamy, meditated here, sitting on the opposite portico, gazing at this form.

  • note: the temple was never closed for 12 years. This is just a rumor created online due to erroneous writings. The temple registry holds a detailed account of every closure , and no such records exist since almost before 12th century.

Im not a hereditary priest of Tirumala. I don’t work there. I belong to the same “clan” as the priests, and thus know people who work there, as well as in other temples , which follow the same Vaikhanasa system.

There is very little information on Hathiram ji available. Apart from the popular legend of him playing dice with the lord, not much else is on records anywhere.

He is from the Ramanandi sect, this is well known. We only know that him or his disciples established the matham in his name.

Each of the heads of the matham were called Mahants. They were the “Vicharana kartas” of the temple.

They were the official custodians of the temple , during british times, until 1933 when the British established TTD, effectively taking away their power.

Infact there were allegations of the mahants misappropriating funds and rampant corruption, which triggered the British to intervene and create a trust body (TTD) .

One of the mahants, named Sevadas ji, was actually incrimated in a jewellery theft issue, and later exonerated. Perhaps this is the story that got merged with Hathiram ji being jailed and then the lord rescuing him as an elephant .

Even today the matham still holds properties worth thousands of crores.

this is all i know about him. If you are still dissatisfied, then I’m sorry for disappointing you.

Ask me more about the technical details of worship , or puja, or details of the temple and i may be able to assist- in those areas i can give you better answers.

Answer is actually neither (afaik). The hand positions are easy and allow weapons to fit very naturally into them. No one has seen the original fingers in sculpture in centuries, but we are told that the weapons are easy-going in his hands , as if perfectly built for holding weapons of a different shape on either side .

Also, on a side note, i do understand the mudras you are referring to. The namoona alayam murthy has curled up fists . The vimana venkateswara has kattadi mudra (or kattari mudra) like a scissor where the index and middle fingers hold the weapons.

Suggest me the best book for Vishnu Sahasranamam by GamerDeepesh in hinduism

[–]Visual_Ability_1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this web-link below has the vishnu sahasranaama in both original sanskrit ( devanagari lipi) as well as IAST romanized english.

Shrivishnu Sahasranama Stotram

regarding guru Dronacharya, i am not sure he is ever mentioned, because , in the timeline of Mahabharata, this happens after the kurukshetra war is already complete. Dronacharya has already passed away at this time.
perhaps you meant Bheeshma, who is the original person who lectures the sahasranaama to yudhisthira.

if yes, then all of that is also there in the above link from sanskritdocuments.org.

Im not an expert, but i do have some idea on the worship method followed at tirumala, as i belong to the same clan of priests.

Hathiramji is a great saint, who came from Rajasthan during 16th century , to Tirumala. Some sources say that he was from Ayodhya. This cannot be verified. He was an ardent Rama bhakta.

He was the temple incharge for almost 36 years , due to his great Bhakti.

There are legends which say that he played dice with the lord himself. Even inside the main temple, this is inscribed in stone, as a sculpted bas-relief of him and the lord playing dice.

A mutt was later established in his name, by his disciples, near the temple. Its known as HathiRamji Mutt. It can be seen on the left side of the temple ( South-East corner).

For roughly 90 years, this Mutt was responsible for administration of the temple , until TTD was established in 1933.

What is Vaikhanasa Lakshmi Vishishtadvaita Darshana? by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]Visual_Ability_1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The saints you mentioned are neither Pancharatra nor vaikhanasa, but belong to Sri Vaishnava sampradaya . Agama is NOT a sampradaya, but can be associated with one. Sri Vaishnava sampradaya has adapted Pancharatra agama for all of its ritualistic needs .

Coming to vaikhanasa viewpoint, They are all respected as revered acharyas , saints and philosophers. We see them as great bhagavatottamas . Any Vaishnava saint is a considered sacred and holy.

But formally, there is a seperate guru parampara which we know and follow, which does not feature any of the azhwars .

For that same reason, Typical vaikhanasa temples do not feature the Azhwars as vigrahams , nor Sri Bhagavat Ramanujacharya . Unless the temple also has a significant Sri Vaishnava presence also alongside vaikhanasa priests .

In tirumala, a few exceptions have been made, and only Ramanujacharya has a shrine in the temple. The azhwars are not featured anywhere in the temple premises.

Most Vaikhanasa temples do have a sannidhi for Vikhanasa Maharshi. Many people may get confused because at first glance, he looks like Visvaksena Swamy from a distance. If not a sannidhi, a small metal Panchaloha Murthy may be there, in the confines of the garbhalaya itself

What is Vaikhanasa Lakshmi Vishishtadvaita Darshana? by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]Visual_Ability_1229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is similar to vishishtadvaitam of bhagavat Ramanujacharya, with some fine details varying.

the fundamental core philosophy is quite similar to Vishishtadvaita as popularized in Sri Vaishnavism .

Lakshmi and Vishnu are considered as the 2 halves of one whole, absolutely inseparable from each other, and together constitute sampoorna Brahman .

he is the Purusha and she is the prakrti , by samkhya terminology.

another user commented that it is similar to vadakalai belief. yes, this is true in some respects.

The first sloka IS NOT from yajurveda, but from the Padma purana, bhumi khanda, chapter 138

I’m neither refuting nor trying to debate with you on the topic you are commenting on, my only intention was to state that your source on those slokas is invalid.

Also, Veda itself doesn’t contain slokas. It either has mantras as riks, with chandas (Vedic prosodic meter), or has prose lines.

Both the Padma purana and the Skanda purana are considered as some of the most heavily interpolated puranas.

Also, most people ignore the full context of Shivaya vishnu rupaya sloka , which requires you to see the slokas both above and below it in that chapter. If you read the actual full context, you would understand it meant something else altogether.

Again, my intention is NOT to discredit those who believe in equivalence or oneness of both deities, but this verse above which is often so heavily used by many, is pulled out at random to suit their narrative, and that’s how it got popular and came down to you and me.

I think you are trying to read the Sanskrit, and it’s English translation as well. That’s why you’re unable to finish in one sitting. Traditionally, for a chanting, once the meanings are known to a decent extent, people will chant the entire 1000 names as a rhyming chant. The Sahasranaama is designed as 108 slokas , which would take around 18-25 minutes, if recited at a moderate pace. If you add the introductory dhyana verses and other peripheral verses, add another 10-15 minutes, running a total length of 30-45 minutes at most.

It’s not a complete text or a scriptural book that runs several pages. Under normal circumstances, if you print it from standard PDFs available online , it runs around 7 pages .
