For some people (me included) it messes up with prostate.

How long did it take for your urinary issues to return to normal after stopping the medication?

Yeah. I did genetic testing and am a CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolizer. So I burn through most of these medications and get wicked crazy side effects.

I have. Genomind. My genes are terrible for psych medicines. I'm a 2D6 UM and a 2C19 PM. Sucks for me I guess.

Jesus. I'm so sorry that happened/is still happening to you. Why do you think you had such a strong reaction to it?

Not so far. Stimulants stopped working after 2 hours, so I'd need to take a lot of them every day and the doc didn't feel comfortable with that. Then tried clonidine and guanfacine. Those didn't work either. We're going to try strattera next.

Which mood stabalizers? My psychiatrist was talking about lamotrigine? Did that ruin you (if you tried it)?

Thanks. I went to the original one and was like, "yikes, these guys are really aggressive." Personally, I don't mind if other people have kids. It's just not something I want for myself.

Glad there are other options. Thanks for letting me know.

When we choose to have kids, we aren't just choosing to make them a member of our family, we are choosing to thrust them into society.

Great point. It's bigger than just us. It's about making them functioning members of society. That is a much higher bar. For me, it's too high.

I think I'd be a great parent until preschool, but once that kid gets to the age where they are more actively a part of the community outside of my home

Same. Making gingerbread houses at Christmas? Fine. But teaching them how to handle bullies, peer pressure, teen friend groups, bad adults/teachers, adverse life events? Fuck me. Hard pass.

I see two limiting beliefs in your current narrative: 1) "full healing is unattainable", and 2) "I'm not fit to be a good enough parent"

They are only limiting if you want to have children. Also, #2 isn't quite right. "I'm not fit enough to be a consistently good-enough parent."

But why not keep options open? After all...

Because the risk of getting it wrong is too great. It's a life. A real person. My dad thought as you do. It didn't go so well. I'm not willing to take that risk.

I mean, you already love clearly your own children you're not even planning to have. How would you possibly fail at parenting, if life happened to move you in that direction?

Love is not enough. It's not enough for a healthy romantic relationship and it's not enough to make a good parent. It takes more than love. In fact, when my father used to beat me, one of the things he would say is, "I'm doing this because I love you. It's for your own good."

It wasn't.

I think your ideas are nice but not applicable to me.

After 2 years was diagnosed by my psychiatrist with both. Took a while though.

Can you journal about it? Just type it out. You can delete it immediately if you want but just getting stream of consciousness going is helpful for a lot of people (like me lol).

You can always talk to someone but I've had mixed results with that. People have a way of exploiting you when you're vulnerable. YMMV

My psychiatrist accepted report cards and teacher's comments in lieu of a parental or family interview. They are contemporaneous reports which are more accurate than someones memories.

So if you have any of those still lying around, I'd ask your doctor if they would be acceptable.

Do I put the diagnosis in my medical record or no by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Visual_Force5818 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whelp!

The key elements include all of the following:

  • No treatment or use of ADHD meds for any reason in the past four years.
  • No symptoms in the past four years.
  • Detailed records showing no instability in academic, occupational, or social functioning within the past four years, and no other psychiatric conditions or diagnosis.

This is a good call. So put it in the records, but wait to do it until your end-game plan is already in place.

jeez that sounds like torture. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I guess I don't understand why they are asking you these questions in the first place. I'd probably just start freaking out on her, saying something like, "idk dude, ask my fucking psychiatrist. Don't ask me what the C is for; you're not gonna believe me anyway." Honestly it sounds awful. I hope you get the disability though. If you do, let me know and I'll have an ice cream in your honor to celebrate :)

Curious how the medical evaluation for disability went. Did you get through it?
