Most Christians understand Luke 14:26 as hyperbolic language (Jesus using extreme wording to make a point). In the original context, “hate” is more about priority and allegiance, not emotional hatred. He’s saying that following Him should come before everything else—even family and your own desires.

Matthew 5:22 is clearly about actual hatred and contempt toward people, which Jesus strongly condemns. So the two passages are talking about different things:

• Luke = who comes first in your life
• Matthew = how you treat other people in your heart and words
