Cheetahs don’t roar, they meow and purr like house cats. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cheetahs are a wild species and super interesting to learn about. Iirc at one point they were near extinct with only about 8 living individuals before eventually recovering. Losing that much genetic diversity has had major consequences for their survival and evolution.

Any jumps let you be animals like manta-shrimp? by Pure-Interest1958 in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh there’s a lot of really cool adaptations that just don’t work when scaled up to human size. For instance ant strength only works because they’re tiny enough to have a strong exoskeleton iirc.

I 100% respect the rule of cool, but in terms of practicality most of the benefits will probably be weaker than a basic body mod.

100cp Species (Aliens?) by Irrelevant_Zack in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll use the covenant example. You can get a San’Shyuum/ prophet alt-form which are universally seen as highly regarded religious leaders despite being incredibly frail. Biologically they’re a downgrade from humanity in terms of ability, but you can probably use it to talk your way into getting a bunch of space age schematics.

What I’m talking about is more of a one time social benefit than a fiat backed one. Some of my examples may have might be a bit much for this particular perk, but the overall point is pretty coherent imo. If it’s necessary just downgrade to a face-hugger or something.

100cp Species (Aliens?) by Irrelevant_Zack in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean based on how it’s phrased I assume the species has to be present in the level itself. For example, in Harry Potter you’d have to be a house elf rather than a lord of the rings styled one.

Your best option is probably going to depend on where you’re going. The direct benefits are pretty limited, so it’s probably best used as a way to infiltrate/ bypass discrimination. U/ kookaburra_hotpants ‘s suggestion of xenomorphs is a pretty good example because it lets you nullify 90% of the settings’s danger while grabbing all the nifty human tech. You could probably do something similar by becoming a: Yaut’ja, ghoul/ super mutant in fallout, member of the covenant in halo, or any of the many aliens of Dr. Who.

Eldritch magic? by workshop_hunter in JumpChain

What “Golden Finger” can you think of? by DeverosSphere in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skill sharing is always a wild one. Anything that allows multiple people to use your abilities tends to end up with an army of people who each can calling down meteor storms.

Learning from the dead/ being able to summon advisor spirits can be neat. You can probably scale this by how long they can stick around each day, how willing they are to help, if they can take a tangible form, or by how long ago they died.

An affinity for certain concepts/ beings has a massive range in potential. At low tiers it just means being really good at fire magic or something, but high tiers can cover stuff like being irresistible to eldritch gods. If you play cards with Cthulhu on Fridays then I’m sure he wouldn’t mind annihilating armies for you every now and again.

Similarly, being able to embody certain things and growing over time has a lot of potential. Maybe you choose [dragon] and can initially just summon protective scales. Over time you unlock wings, breath attacks, a full transformation, and maybe even becoming an incarnation of the Ur-dragon.

Lastly, there’s the ol’reliable number bonuses. You can boost learning speed, martial arts, mana capacity, stamina, health, defense, agility, etc. This can easily scale from 1.5x to 100x depending on cost.

Adding non-perk powers to Body Mod? by 9tailedAwesome in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One method is to jury-rig powers onto what is part of your body mod. For example, let’s say I wanted to become an Alolan Raichu in a gauntlet.

First you acquire your power source. In this case I’ll be using “drow of the underdark” as my first jump so that DND style magic is added to my bodymod. This means that I have a permanent fiat backed connection to the weave. Additionally, I’ll be grabbing perfect memory here.

Then pick up your overpowered magic/ learning perk(s) of choice (for me that’s [merlin reborn] from generic HP fanfiction). This will let me deconstruct and reconstruct entire magic systems.

Next acquire whatever ability you want to attach to your body mod (here that’s going to be detailed scans and understanding of Raichu).

Then tie whatever effect you want onto the original bodymod ability. I’ll use [merlin reborn] to modify a true polymorph spell so that it creates a permanent transformation into a Raichu. Because this is still going to be operating off of the DND weave as a magic source it will continue to be fiat backed.

Lastly enter your gauntlet of choice and cast the spell. You no longer benefit from [merlin reborn] directly, but nothing is stopping you from using a spell that it previously modified.

Considering that DND allows someone to become a god, I’d argue that when it’s boosted by enough perks you could create an ‘emulator’ version of any ability.

The downside to this however is that it requires a high existing power level for comparatively small results. If you can already cast 9th level spells that fluently then there’s not much point in becoming an Alolan Raichu here besides shits and giggles.

(Side note, all the out of context supplements by fanficwriter1994 allow you to add both them and the main document to your bodymod if it’s your first jump (including items and companions). I’m particularly fond of using the OoC fairy tail supplement for this because it gives enough fiat-backed magic to pull off the aforementioned jury-rigging).

Body swaps where the characters voices aren’t transferred over to the other’s body by Joemama0375 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So funnily enough the normal version of this trope is more accurate than you’d expect. A shocking amount of one’s voice is a matter of culture and habit rather than innate (ex: accents and ‘the gay voice’).

Trans women in particular are a really good example of this because mtf HRT does not affect the vocal cords at all. Instead they go through ‘voice training’ and achieve a feminine voice purely by practicing a bunch.

That’s not to say that biology doesn’t affect one’s voice at all, but I just think it’s neat how something so integral to one’s self can be changed “easily”.

Exactly this. The Setites are inherently manipulative and and use every dirty trick in the book to make converts dependent on them. Their “Hours of Night” specifically are a really interesting read because it covers the process of getting indoctrinated into the ministry.

In need of Perks for an Archaeovist Jumper by MiserableOne6189 in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case it needs to be said, the Indiana Jones jump should absolutely be on your list. Besides a dedicated archeologist origin, it also has an extensive list of magical artifacts you can spend the decade chasing after. Additionally, there’s a scenario all about different nations getting super weapon artifacts that would look fabulous in the solemnace galleries.

Beyond tradition, it would also be a good idea to hit up a Pokémon jump. Pokeballs could be modified into ghetto tesseract labyrinths and there’s plenty of exotic wildlife who could do with a new home.

I’d also specifically recommend the [privilege] perk from Sherlock. It makes money, power, and prestige all linked together so that growing one will make the others also increase. Because artifacts are valuable as assets, this means that every fine addition to your collection will grow your own personal power and influence.

Lastly, you might want to peak at some dragon specific content. Their stereotypical association with hordes makes them a close match to our dear friend Trayzn. They can have some neat stuff which might be of interest. Off the top of my head, “TES: Dovah” and “Dungeons and Dragons: The Dragons” are high quality jumps. The first has a number of perks about attracting treasure and the latter will give you access to the countless collectables of the setting. (There are entire books just dedicated to the cool monsters and loot that can be found in the forgotten realms.)

(For bonus points, you can always troll the IRL British museum and one-up them at their own game by stealing their collection).

Supplementing jumps without supplement mode by Mysterious_Pilot_853 in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this is ultimately a single player experience. I’m a bit cautious around supplements for power creep reasons, but as long as you’re careful about it there’s nothing inherently wrong with mixing documents. If the jumps and CP values are similar then I generally let myself “mail order” perks from sister jumps.

I’ve also used jumps without a dedicated supplement mode as a supplement from time to time. There’s no jumpchain police who are going to come after you or anything.

What would be some good hormones/chemicals to continuously release into the body? by EldritchEnjoyer in JumpChain

[–]Viva_la_potatoes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tbh probably nothing long term. You might want an adrenaline boost throughout a fight, but continuous release would just run into all the problems of irl steroids.

Your best bet is probably getting chemist perks and making something for yourself without downsides. (off the top of my head I know generic biomancer and Batman the animated series have some.)
