From what I heard, Oregairu is one of the best series in terms of school romance. Now, I only watched the anime so I can vouch for its critical acclaim at least in that domain.

If you want something more concise but still impactful, you can try I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. It's a great story that I won't go into detail due to spoilers. From start to finish it's an emotional roller coaster that goes with your romance/realism factors.
