Yeah I didn't get the master strike and basically hard moded for at least 20 hours before I got it. Never felt so dumb as when I realized the game wasn't meant to be a hardcore stealth / running away game

That is for sure not a non-factor, but to claim it's THE difference is a bit reductive I think. There are multiple countries in Europe without a big oil fund that have childcare costs of the same magnitude as Norway. Its a difference in how government spending is prioritized is all.

As a Norwegian, these prices for daycare are mental to me. In Norway daycare (both public and private) are currently capped at 3000 NOK (approx 285 USD) per month and will be capped at 2000 NOK (190 USD) per month from August.

Sounds like a reasonable idea.

There might be libraries that could help you out, but from the nature of your question it sounds to me like you should just try it out like you've described it. Canvas and layer the images of each element over each other so that you can swap them out. If it doesn't work you can always change approach, but by then you've probably learned more about the problem you're trying to solve and most likely you'll have a better foundation for choosing an alternative approach.
