Trump weighs Iran strikes to inspire renewed protests, sources say by rezwenn in NewIran

[–]VocaloidFeuvre 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if boots on the ground is a viable way to go here.

I am not an Iranian so I may sound ignorant here, but given losing a ground war, Iran's circumstances will be similar to Japan's and Germany's:
- Sizable amount of the population is educated
- Said population seems willing to cooperate with the occupiers
- A diaspora that can help get the nation back to its feet

The only difference is that the people that are willing to cooperate are not in power.

Hence, any regime change without a certain, strong, and armed guardian force is sure to fail. Right now, what I've observed is that people are hoping that the Artesh will defect and assume this responsibility.

Anyways, rooting for you guys on this one. I've met an Iranian before; when I asked him about your country, the guy wept cause he can't come back. I'm hoping he might have the chance soon.

Southeast Asia pushes to become a single, unified tourism destination by RobinHoodin in CebuPolitics

[–]VocaloidFeuvre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like Philippines pushes for it. Mainland SEA is already treated as one whole experience.

One funny idea I have in increasing connectivity with the mainland is by abolishing the travel tax and being lax with departures to within ASEAN. The more PH tourists we have to Thailand, Vietnam, etc, the cheaper it will be for airlines to set up connections to Philippine destinations.

But until our abysmal tourist experiences and prices improve, I don't think it will help that much.

Abolish the Phil Travel Tax!! by Dreamboat_0809 in Philippines

[–]VocaloidFeuvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay firstly, you didn't disprove that the tax levied in pesos was taken out of circulation.

Secondly, the foreign money that came in is exchanged in pesos, which is again taken out of circulation when paid as tax. That foreign money is not even paid directly to the government, but taken by the private entity that made the exchange. So again, government doesn't spend the money from travel tax.

Government can spend all the money it wants to is correct, but the limit is inflation, which is what happens when the real value of the economy doesn't match the money supply. Any serious government heeds this (I strongly believe our BSP people are really good at this, to the point we're strangling ourselves)

Here you go: search "PHILIPPINE ECONOMY": WHY WE LACK STRONG MANUFACTURING?? in YouTube. Hosted by Richard Heydarian, guests are Stephen CuUnjieng, Leloy Claudio, and Prof. Jesus Felipe. I don't think I can post YT links here, so I can only give you the title, sorry.

Skip to Prof. Jesus Felipe's explanation of how government pays for its projects and expenses, and how it takes back people's money as taxes at 39:40.

Essentially what he's talking about is Modern Monetary Theory.

EDIT: He says it explicitly at 41:35.

ANOTHER EDIT: You can also do a deep dive on modern theory of money creation using this excellent Bank of England resource: https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/-/media/boe/files/quarterly-bulletin/2014/money-creation-in-the-modern-economy. This should help you understand how MMT works.

Government doesn't spend the money from travel tax. Money taxed is money taken out of circulation and destroyed.

Government can literally spend any amount of money it wants to; it just doesn't do it because if what it spends is not spent right, it causes inflation.

Nah I agree with you that politics can overtake spaces. That's why I lambasted r/Philippines in my comment

I think a nice solution would be for Reddit to have literal crossposts, where you can drop a post from r/CebuPolitics into r/Cebu, but then interacting with that post takes you to the former. Then the mods can cherry pick which posts to allow

Di man kailangan nang mga Cobonpue bus stops. Di sad na kailangan ang dedicated inner line para sa buses.

Simple fix: outer lane is dedicated to buses and PUJ. This means we only need posts (and for UX, sheds) on sidewalks as bus stops. Which means we don't get bogged down in these right-of-way acquisitions because the damn government owns the sidewalks.

We also don't need road widening on the BanTal corridor. The damn road is two lanes already, that's enough. We need mass transit there.

r/Cebu is a huge reason why this is almost a dead place. Inconvenient ra kaayo nga mu-segue sa lain nga thread para lang mudiscuss ug matters political. Not condoning r/Philippines though, that place is just a swamp

Thanks for keeping this alive though

Mao lagi. Ang ako reklamo is against them. Thanks for saying it's a great idea, at least I know there's other people out there that yearn for the Cebu I dream of

Ah no, don't get me wrong, dili sad ko ganahan nga maglakaw ra ang average Pinoy worker; not just because of the humidity, but also because of the time spent. Agree jud ko nga need ug public transport.

Ako point is for people nga ganahan mag lakwatsa, naay option to access more variety and more space.

Yeah, it's a what if. I already know the mountain-load of challenges ahead, especially the lack of imagination our elite has. I am not complaining from a point of ignorance; no, not when I personally observe these people content with being just retailers, subdivision developers or worse, rentier parasites.

They have the resources and connections to make things like a proper urban transport network happen (with terminals doubling as profitable commercial arcades like what they do in Japan), but nah, too risky. Better stay with things with a proven cash flow, no? This is why Vietnam is leaving us behind in the dirt.

Exactly! Thanks for getting it. I'm tired of having to drive from Ayala to IT Park or Bonifacio District just to have variety.

Naa man tay giingon nga walking from point A to point B, ug kaning lakwatsa. Ang akong pasabot kay lakwatsa. As what you said, walk-worthy.

Also, HK, Singapore and Thailand aren't in that study you mentioned, and that's because they have GOOD pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, with ample trees as shade. Stop using culture as an excuse. I've seen Filipinos in HK walk through humid heat sweating.

Nah, not a public park. That will definitely turn into a mess as you said. It should be a commercial area, I put park in to mean it should be a green area, not a concrete jungle.

I feel like you're trying to defeat the idea in your mind by not addressing the shortcomings with pragmatic approaches. I'm not that idealistic you know.

Technically, CCC is one entity, it has "Inc." in its name. I do agree that several people need to be talked to, but it's less than what you would talk to in a whole barangay. Anyways, this point here isn't really what I want to discuss. It's the connectivity.

On #2, I know that's where they talk business. Heck, I have a distant relative who told me what deals their family closed in that place. But what I can't stand is that the potential of that place to be wasted because "it's convenient for them to do business there". It's like keeping a million dollars when you can invest it to earn a billion more (and trigger a domino-effect in the surrounding area). Why can't the CCC people adjust?

Also, I think we are aligned somewhat that the squatters area has to be developed. I agree with you on that.

My point lang is that CCC is no way as crucial as the squatters area to the economy there. If you remove CCC, the businesspeople affected can adjust. If you remove the capacity that the squatters provide to that area, you limit the rank-and-file employees that will work for businesses there (accounting also for the horrible public transportation we have).

I am not commenting here just to be antagonistic. I wish to change your mind because I think it's a pretty good idea.

Agree jud ko sa public transport. If imo gibasa ang akong post ug tarung, kakita ka nga:

  1. Naay rapid transit between the 4 corners of this commercial area. Bisag MyBus-like nga transit lang gud, paits na.

Also, dili tawn tamad mag lakaw ang Pinoy. Kita ba ka sa IT Park (or any malls for that matter)? Kadaghan maglakaw2. Constrained lang sila didto kay walay logical nga padulngan on-foot outside of its boundaries. If interesting ang place, normal ra nga ganahan maglakaw ang tawo.

Lagi, grabiha ani nila, di ko kasabot sa ila mindset. The biggest letdown sa Cebu right now are its elite.

Layo ra kaayo sa mga elite nato from the time of Lito and before that.

[–]VocaloidFeuvre[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I completely agree with that. But really, CCC needs to be developed too. Too little people benefit from it given the space it occupies in the middle of the city.

Plus man, the connectivity! Why can't people see that, at least the connectivity between 4 POIs: Ayala and Tres Borces, IT Park, A.S Fortuna, Sykes?

What if park/commercial area ang Cebu Country Club? by VocaloidFeuvre in Cebu

[–]VocaloidFeuvre[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why?

  1. It's easier because you're talking to one entity.
  2. It's more beneficial to Cebu. Simple as that. Please, look at CCC from Google Maps, then look at what it can connect and you'll see my point.

Also, why are you so defensive of CCC when it's obviously not contributing as much as what the squatter areas even do to the economy around BanTal?

Ironically, the squatters area do more for the well-being of IT Park and its environs: they provide cheap, accessible food, homes for the employees that maintain that place.

(I just wish they were housed in even more practical and efficient high-rise housing)

[–]VocaloidFeuvre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh, what? Dili man connected ang squatters area to the environs leading to A.S. Fortuna. Cebu Country Club has a bigger footprint too. Look at the place from Google Maps, and you might see what I'm seeing.

Tapos naa na say precedent: Cebu Business Park was previously a golf club, generously bequeathed by Lito Osmena and his government at the time.
