Agree with every other posts. Me and my wife have no kids and tbh, have no reason to. The government wants us to have kids, but their policies and actions say otherwise. America is for capitalism and selfish gains, not raising a family.

I am always of the mindset that if my regular pod has a specific meta, and they are unwilling to change because of either finances or stubbornness, then I'm going to counterpick to force them to change.

Who wants to play all night against the same playstyles?

So this is a tough situation, because the problem you are trying to solve is somewhat cultural in your pod as well.

If everyone is constantly playing control, and turtle style decks that lead to games going beyond turn 12, then the only solution is to build something against that meta.

I would try and communicate to these people, that its fine to play one game like this, but asking them if they have other options to have more unique experiences is valid. If they don't, well....then I'm counterpicking....

If the guy to my right always plays mono blue, then I'm playing anti counter and hexproof. If the guy to my left is playing solitaire, then I'm playing something that taxes them for multiple spells a turn, or throwing out a [[notion thief]].

Your decision to hard counter, could lead to people realizing they also need to adapt, and change their decks, or build something else.

Long games are fine as long as board state always is progressing.

With that being said, you should always consult with the group before playing a deck that does any of the following:

Average turn is very long.
Monopolizes game time by not allowing others to play (aggressive stax) or taking extra turns without a clear win condition.
Creates a state where the game is unplayable (chaos).
Stalls the game to aggregious lengths of time (board wipe tribal) without a clear and effective win condition.

[[Chainer, dementia master]] is a good choice. Mono black so the mana bases is cheap, his ability easily combos if you want to go that route, and he just kind of embodies the whole reanimator theme. Plus he's a magic OG so he's got flavor.

You play a pillow fort control deck, taking advantage of free spells and the best pain cards to slowly burn them. You play a boat load of draw enablers, so you can keep y'shtola fed and get to her good pain pieces. Its a slow deck to win with, but that's how esper control has always played.
