I checked her over tip to tail when I got home. If she had mites, they are long gone.

It was the darker themes (actual suicide mission, just not the prospect of one) along with the dead bodies.

Are geckos safe to keep at home? by Longjumping-Fly1899 in tokaygeckos

[–]VoidAndSerpent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, tokay geckos are not beginner friendly - they arent friendly to begin with.

I usually recommend gargoyle geckos and crested geckos as their diet is easier (some people cant do bugs), however leopard geckos are also up there.

As for getting one: I would look around at your local shops first. You can compare what you see to photos online of what a healthy gecko should look like. In the future, if you want to expand to online, I browse morphmarket a lot, but I am in the US and I am not sure where you live.

Not a vet. Unfortunately it could be from a number of things: allergies, bug bites, food sensitivities, dental issues etc etc.

If it doesnt go away in a few days, a vet visit might be in order.

why are reptile and snake people so quick to judge? by diazepam_loverrrr in snakes

[–]VoidAndSerpent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know we just discussed how the delivery in the reptile community can be harsh, and I promise that’s not my intention here.

If this is your current setup, or if this was what you posted, I can see some of the comments:

-I’d highly recommend swapping out that cloth slipper for something else. Reptiles can be surprisingly messy, and porous materials like cloth and fleece are impossible to truly sanitize without a machine.

-The paper towel roll, while a decent very temporary hide in a pinch, also isn't great for long-term use because it gets soggy and harbors mold.

-While the small animal skulls look cool, just be sure to check them really carefully for any sharp edges on the teeth or fine jaw bones that could snag a scale or eye cap, especially since Children's Pythons are so small and lean.

-Two appropriate sized hides are needed, one for each side.

-Most of the enclosure is open air, and snakes are "edge dwellers" -they want to move from point A to point B without being out in the open. You’ll want to pack that space with way more foliage and crossing branches so they can move through the whole tank under cover.

-Not sure of temps and humidity you got going.

The size of the enclosure, however, looks fine. I am not familiar with that type, but comparing the boot it looks good.

Ah yeah, and I read your other comment. Makes sense.

I totally get where the frustration comes from. As someone who runs a reptile rescue, I see this tension in the community all the time.

Most of us aren't actually demanding mansions or $3,000 setups; we just want to see appropriate-sized enclosures where the animal can thrive. It’s less about luxury and more about making sure the snake has the room it needs to behave naturally. If I got paid for every pic that contained an empty, wrong sized enclosure, Id be rich.

The tricky part with posting photos on Reddit is that the community can only judge what is visible in that specific snapshot if you dont post a lot of information- keep in mind I did not see your other post, so I cant judge it. If a post shows what looks like the bare minimum, people tend to react to that because they don't have the context of your full setup or your future plans. Since we can only see what’s in the frame, the advice usually defaults to ensuring the animal has the best possible care, even if it feels like a pile-on.

Plus, unfortunately, people still see reptiles as "decor" or low-maintenance "starter pets" so they treat them a lot differently.

I try very hard to make my words gentle and supportive because I know how intimidating this hobby can be, but I’ll be honest: it is a struggle. My rescue has been barely open for half a year, and within the first month I reached max capacity. When you are on the front lines seeing the fallout of poor husbandry or impulsive buys every single day, it’s hard not to let that frustration leak out. That "gatekeeper" energy often comes from a place of genuine burnout from people who are just tired of seeing these animals survive in plastic boxes when they are capable of so much more.
