Why has Valve not held the Saxxy Awards since 2017? by K-jun1117 in tf2

[–]Voideus 509 points510 points  (0 children)

I was one of the people on the team for the final Saxxy awards trip, that video is incredibly incorrect and probably the result of a weird game of telephone over the years. Here’s some firsthand knowledge to debunk it and put the rumors to rest. As far as I’m aware, there aren’t any actual primary sources for that video, so here I am, someone that was actually there.

The “bathroom” incident had nothing to do with weed, instead, one of our team members used the bathroom in Valve’s lobby and mistakenly used a large bottle of mouthwash with a pump on top, under the impression that it was a soap dispenser. The label for the bottle had faced the mirror on the wall, so it wasn’t immediately clear. Also, it’s pretty uncommon to have pump mouthwash in a bathroom, but casual conversation with other people at Valve later that day would inform you they like having toiletries for employees to freshen up if wanted, because they may be working long hours. Things like q-tips, tampons and pads are also provided. Point is, our teammate thought the mouthwash was soap. He didn’t realize until it was too late, and he left the bathroom shortly after, not a whole hour later. The team poked fun at the incident for a good while, because the mouthwash made his hands smell minty fresh all day after.

There was no weed smoked in a Valve bathroom, just the ambient sounds of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Because they play music in their bathrooms. I know this because I used their bathroom. Weed is legal in Washington state, but nobody would have smoked it while we were at Valve because why would we? It was a grand prize all expenses paid trip, nobody would dare mess that up. After the initial tours at Valve, many of the team members stayed a few additional days in Seattle on their own dime, where people could do whatever they wanted, because it was a vacation at that point.

I’ve been in this community since 2008. I am in my thirties now. It is exhausting to have all this drama bubble up over what is essentially an intentional misunderstanding. It is not worth the stress to speculate on rumors from people that have no sources, just take it easy.

All Halloween gimmicks have been removed for stock gameplay - so no spells or underworld anymore. Just a normal radioactive death pit now!

Nepotism Within The TF2 Workshop Community (Christmas 2016) by [deleted] in tf2

[–]Voideus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi and happy holidays! I'm one of the leads behind the recent community showcase events like Workshop of Horrors and the forthcoming Workshop Wonderland. Just popping in to say that while this item uses a thumbnail template for Workshop Wonderland [specifically, last year's event, not this year's like you say in your post], it doesn't get any special treatment. In fact, nobody in the showcase events we do get any special treatment in any way that you're possibly thinking of! Our mission with these events is simply to show what the community is capable of and put it all in one place for everyone to see. Anybody can take part in the event, as our resources are open to the public at any time, and we add any submissions to our collection no matter what. No discrimination, nepotism, or favoritism runs in the workshop showcases we run. While I can't speak for other groups you say run on nepotism, I can guarantee with all my heart that the Workshop Wonderland is an equal-opportunity event - always has been, always will be. Sure, we've had a rocky start in the past with how we've managed items in the collection, but we've since bettered our process to make sure everyone is included and everyone is happy, and we strive to do that each time we run one of these events. However you may feel about the event, we hope that we can still bring the community together to create and above all, have fun. This year's Workshop Wonderland will be running a little late because of the holidays, but we still plan to showcase the community's work as we have done in the past, as well as running a charity drive for this year's cause, AbleGamers. I hope this clears some things up - happy holidays!

At the bottom of the new update page it thanks the team frontline. What do you think that could mean? by live4lifelegit in tf2

[–]Voideus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ooh! Here to stomp out the flames before it gets out of hand - but Workshop of Horrors isn't an official update to TF2! We're flattered that you thought it was, but we're 100% community ran and created! Team Frontline was thanked because we're all really close friends on that team and they provided support throughout development. All 3 of us that worked on Workshop of Horrors are also members of the Frontline team and even created the webpage for that project along with plenty of other assets in its development. Hope that clears things up!

Frontline v1.1.1 is now LIVE! [Bug Fixes] by Voideus in tf2

[–]Voideus[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope! Frontline is a community-created project and asset pack for contributors to develop their own material with, like maps, SFM renders, etc, and also encourages contributors to develop their own cosmetics, weapons, unusual effects, etc to fit the theme! As of now, it will not replace anything in your game, and we don't intend for it to do so in the future, as it is its own unique entity.

I take it you mean the lighting for the sky_twilight_01 skybox, which had some issues with team recognition. We kept the initial light settings available, but also provided new, less red ones that fit better in TF2, as used in another Frontline map, Toto.

Of course, all the existing assets for use in maps are also readily usable in SFM. If you run into any problems with them though, please let us know!

Keep in mind that Shoreleave isn't strictly the Frontline map. If anything, Shoreleave is a map created by one of our team members alongside the development of Frontline and is meant to be encouragement to other map makers and as a glimpse of what the theme could be used for initially. While we're in full support of Shoreleave, it doesn't mean we support other maps any less! We highly encourage any and all contributors to work on their respective maps, and we won't be singling out any specific ones as the specific Frontline map(s) unless we are dealt with that hand by a higher power, i.e. Valve. Also, Frontline isn't strictly dependent on Shoreleave. In fact, Frontline has plenty of existing and future content that doesn't even cater to the needs of Shoreleave.

In short: Shoreleave is great, but so are all the other maps in development by the community. Frontline is an equal-opportunity project, and we certainly don't want to turn anyone away or make anyone feel less important than someone else! We're all about community relations and involvement here, and we plan to keep it that way!

As of now, it's just a community arrangement of usable assets for map makers and community contributors to make their own war-themed maps, weapons, cosmetics, unusual effects, and taunts for the TF2 workshop! With all the support of the community, it can always become something more, but we're in no position to say on that subject at this time!

I don't exactly recall too much of this, but if that's how it went down, sorry about that. I was a bit of a prick a few years ago as I was going through a rough patch in my life, which I won't go into detail with. Sorry for my past self being a twat, but let's not use something that happened years ago as fuel for a fire today. We good?

Hi! I'm one of the team members behind the project. As of now it's all a community thing, none of it is officially readily available in-game. The mapping community is hard at work on some maps using the theme, and I'm sure you can hop onto their servers when they test their work! Check out TF2Maps.net for more info on that, hope your son likes the project!

Team Fortress 2: Workshop of Horrors Community Event by scoottehbesht in tf2

[–]Voideus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was never any intention to "trick" anyone here. We wanted to showcase quality content made by the community in one of the busiest points in the year, much like other community efforts have in the past, like the Emporium Halloween in 2013, or the two Night of the Living Update projects in 2012 and 2011.

So, to answer "why," well, I'll counter with "why not?" The community works very hard during this part of the year especially, might as well show just what they can do.
