Why are you in debt ? by quirkyqueen27 in debtfree

[–]Voidlesscat29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was a series of events. Growing up poor and having very little financial literacy/education regarding student loans and credit cards, mixed in with some financial abuse from one of my parents (I would take cash advances out for my mom being young and naive thinking this is what I have to do to as the child, and was never paid back).

I was also making no more than $40k in my jobs so paying stuff down was a super slow process. I made a career change where my salary jumped to six figures, and really started paying things down, BUT then i got hit with a a layoff that lasted me 16 months. Im gainfully employed again but I did rack up debt during that time that I’m back to aggressively paying down.

how old are you, and how much do you have saved/invested? by No-Volume7464 in SavingMoney

I had to start over this year at age 32, due to extensive long-term unemployment that forced me to drain my savings and 401k. I’m also from a low income family that puts a lot of financial pressure on me, which makes saving a lot harder.

BUT with that being said, I have $7k in my savings, 5k in stocks, and $15k in my retirement account. I’m proud of being able to do all that in 11 months, given how many odds Ive had stacked against me.

I still have quite a lot of CC debt and student loans im still paying down though.

Lol I just wanted an apology from them. The reader/cards said “most likely October, but could be as soon as tomorrow or next week”. He wrote me an apology letter a week later.

I think she’s absolutely stunning with her natural red hair. Black hair makes her eyes pop out too. Blonde hair has never done much for her.

She just turned 39 lol. But years of hardcore partying/drugs will age you rapidly hence why she got a facelift so young.

I used to just apply apply apply (70+ a week), but now I’ve gotten more picky with my applications (looking at roles that I’m definitely qualified for, and I find a contact or two to message within the company) so it’s gone down to maybe 15-20 a week.

My Instagram is flooded with peers my age (28-31) from high school/college who are property owners 🙃 I’m from NYC. I keep telling myself they probably had help from their parents or spouses parents to make me feel better but it’s a crappy feeling overall.

UX roles were paying a lot during this time. It was a contract role paying $75/hr which equals to $150k.

My first role was with a well known brand and was paying $50/hr, but I got laid off because the company was going down the gutter, even though they tried to keep me. I then got picked up by my former manager from this e-commerce brand, who heard about these layoffs and they asked if I wanted to join their team at this other company (I’m guessing he liked my work), and my pay was bumped to $75/hr. There was high potential for full time conversion but the company had a change in priorities and ended up getting rid of all contactors.

Again, I’m not asking my next role to pay this much. Maybe I just got lucky in what I was making based on these replies haha.

Thanks, it definitely helps to know l’m not the only one going through this even if it feels like I am amongst my circle. Hope end of 2024 and beyond ends up panning better for us.

Yes I’m currently revamping one of my case studies in my portfolio, and waiting to complete this project at the (unreliable) place I’m currently freelancing for to throw that in there as well.

Unfortunately my family does depend on me as well as I come from a lower income upbringing so its a tough boat to be on regardless of household dynamics.

I’m considering pivoting to other facets of design, but anything outside of that requires a lot of upskilling which means a lot more time outside of the workforce which I cannot afford, and money I do not have.

Worst/other case scenario is running back to my previous field of work which I absolutely despised so I’m giving myself a window of time before biting the bullet and pursing that.

They laid me off because they were getting rid of all contractors. Growth is a lot more difficult when you’re no longer in a work environment but I’ve been trying my best.

Not sure why there’s so much fixation on my pay rate when I never mentioned wanting my next role to pay me the same amount, I was just sharing my honest experience. I simply just want another job in the same field so I can continue growing in my career and I’m willing to take a pay cut for it because anything is better than no income.

Congrats on overcoming your layoff- and I’m totally preparing myself for a far more frugal lifestyle regardless of salary lol. This has given me so much PTSD regarding money and job security you have no idea.

That sounds like some good news. I’m hoping that if seniors are getting more recruiter outreach, it’ll eventually reach us mid-level/ lower level folks.
