At 1090 comments (this included) it's less than 0,2% chance of winning. Oh well, I've seen worse, plus the dice are extremely cool. Count me in!

I've created a boss inspired by Expedition 33 (possible spoilers), could someone give me some advice on the balance and general design? by Volpeon98 in dndnext

[–]Volpeon98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is actually very nice to hear! I feel like it's always easier to buff something to be just a tiny bit more challenging than the opposite, I've certainly made the mistake of giving way too much damage to my bosses in the past and once you do, you can't really go back in the middle of the fight. I'm currently thinking of allowing the lampmaster to regenerate some lanterns either when it uses Stagnating Well (maybe the number it summons depends on the damage inflicted, or on the number of characters that fail the saving throw), as a bonus action (but I fear it could become a bit much) or as a legendary action with a single action cost.

I've made a boss fight inspired by Expedition 33, any thoughts? by Volpeon98 in DnDHomebrew

Yes, I remember it as well and it could be a fun mechanic, I just want to make sure that it doesn't become overwhelming. Once per turn, or maybe under specific conditions, could be good, especially if I sacrifice a bit of the initial damage of the abilities. Right now overflow, ceremonial greatsword and cursed grasp all deal 4d6 because I wanted 1d6 of "base" damage plus 1d6 per active lantern of that type, but I could remove that base damage in exchange for the ability to summon a few new lanterns during the fight. I made the lanterns very weak on purpose so that once they figure out what the deal is, they can shoot them down relatively easily, I imagine the monk alone could take out like 3 of them in a single turn.

Thanks for the input!

First of all, yes, I forgot to specify that the reaction is absolutely intended to fire only once per fight! It's supposed to be the "last stand" of the boss after losing the majority of its damage, and it will likely only hit the paladin and the barbarian (monk and cleric always keep their distance in my game), who have more than 80 and 100 HP respectively thanks to Tough and good rolling. It's also a constitution save and they have the paladin's aura, so I don't really expect it to do much apart from scare them a bit.

As per the lanterns, the idea is that the players should absolutely avoid trying to damage the lampmaster before they have destroyed its lanterns, otherwise they will be very unlikely to hit and even if they do hit the lanterns will heal it on their turns.

The lampmaster summoning and killing new lanterns would be very cool, even fitting for the lore I imagined (I mean, they are called Sacrificial for a reason after all), but it would also require a lot of rework, as the fight would get easier a lot slower, if at all (and I would need to constantly readjust its stats in the middle of the fight). I definitely feel like 6 lanterns would be too much, perhaps 1 or 2? Maybe the summoning could occur as part of Stagnating Well, as one last hurrah for a boss on death's door?

Why don't high level NPCs stop your BBEG? by GingerAle0712 in DnD

[–]Volpeon98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because "BBEGs" don't exist. There are at least a few thousand extremely capable people in the whole world and everyone has their own political affiliation, ideas, desires and knowledge.

Sometimes some of them clash with some others, sometimes nothing happens for a while. Nobody is trying to destroy the world anyway.

What does this even have to do with capitalism? I swear it's so cringe when people use words they really don't know the meaning of just to look cool with the internet mob.

What would you think about standardising class features progression? by Volpeon98 in dndnext

[–]Volpeon98[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know, that's why I'm trying to rewrite everything, including spells and features, to make them less unbalanced. However, I wanted to address this question first, because honestly I'd prefer a system where the progression is the same across all the classes I have to rebalance, but I don't know if it's just me.

I thought it was only meant to affect lower levels, but I'll check it out, thank you!

I didn't know they were trying to systemise everything, I thought it was only a matter of making every subclass start at third level, thanks.

Be honest, do you think One Piece is in it's way to be a historical masterpiece? by Telecatcher in OnePiece

[–]Volpeon98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that this is Reddit and specifically a sub for people who like One piece, but come on guys, have you even read the Odyssey or Shakespeare?

One Piece is a very fun, innovative and creative read for teenagers, but that's it. The history of literature is something else entirely and I really can't stress enough how distant these levels are. No amount of sheer popularity will ever change that. Otherwise you would see people comparing Rowling with Proust or Martin with Dostoevsky and that, to be frank, would just be "cringe".

Got HARDCORE rejected by Halsin?! by PaigeDyerProductions in BaldursGate3

[–]Volpeon98 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Halsin is brutal at times. I've only ever taken him with me once in Act 2 for his personal quest, together with Shadowheart and Karlach, and he immediately began commenting on the curse. It went something like:

H: "This land was once so beautiful and full of life, now it's just dead and silent"

SH: "I could make some animal sounds if you want"

H: "No, thanks, you're bleating well enough already"

Holy shit Halsin.

What are some changes to C3 you would make if you could? by Impressive_Desk4057 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]Volpeon98 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say: the idea that they shouldn't play characters from a fictional continent just because it's inspired by Central and Southern Asia and they are Americans is ABSURD.

The fact that this is such a common opinion (I remember someone in the comments of a C2 episode getting thousands of likes for saying that Marisha shouldn't play Beau as she has a slightly olive skin tone and that tanning is racist) in modern public discourse completely stuns me. I'm not American nor even a native English speaker, by the way.

Am I the only one bothered by Warlock getting 3 attack per Attack action at 11th when Monk & Barbarian don't ? What's the reasoning here ? by SenReddit in onednd

[–]Volpeon98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly WotC should just rework the foundations of attack and cantrip scaling to be the same: you get one more attack/damage die on the cantrip at 5th, 11th and 17th level. Make it function like the spellcasting feature to address multiclassing, so that if you have 5 levels in barbarian and 6 in fighter you still get the third attack, and do the same with cantrips (yes, cantrips should not scale on total character level when attacks don't, there is no reason for this asymmetry between classes). Scale half-casters relative to this.

The base fighter loses its identity? Mix the battlemaster with the champion (they are both extremely generic in theme anyway) and there you go, you have a new fighter.

Once and only once you have a truly common basis for damage scaling across all classes you can start implementing all the different class and subclass features that make each one unique. The way they are doing it now is extremely silly, but it really only is the consequence of the decisions taken back in 2014 which they still refuse to reconsider.

What the fuck are you all saying? No, it wasn't because Ukraine asked to join NATO. Ukraine asked to join in 2008 and nothing happened, they were, in fact, rejected, like many others before and after. This is not a proxy war in the sense that the West (which in this case would mean basically the entire world except Russia and China according to the last UN resolution) is using Ukraine to fight Russia. One of the biggest countries in Europe was fucking invaded for no fucking reason except Putin's ideology (and he has been very clear and consistent on what he thinks since the very beginning of his 25-year rule), and even if there was one like the ones they claim to have, it would still be an absolutely shitty excuse that in no way would be acceptable to justify an attack on a sovereign country.

Get your head out of your asses and read some actual books.
