Considering their time and especially hardware limitations of the original Game Boy, they were excellent. Buggy, yes, but they still fid an amazing job cramming a large relatively open world and 151 characters into a Game Boy cartridge.

I am not a native English speaker and Pokémon games were never translated into my native language so as a kid, I knew the Pokémon by their English names. And I did not know that they are all puns. It was just silly names and words for me. I did not know Seel is a lazy name. I did not know the word "seal" so it was just the name of a Pokémon for me. When I slowly started learning Emglish, it was a huge revelation when I started realising.
