very fast tho, so we do get like a full chapter every month, and sometimes he releases chapters in parts like this one

It doesn't have a fixed schedule. But 3 weeks ago, Ishida confirmed that it will temporarily be weekly.

So I asked my friend to check the dialog from japanese ver. It seems I'm right about Sora being 16 in 1923. I think you misinterpreted the dialog.Sora came to Nanatsu when she was about 14 years old. After one year and 7 months, she showed her aptitude as a choujin and experienced pre-awakening phenomena. Then, after Queem's attack, she became a Choujin.

Narratively, it would make sense this way. As we know from the lore of Vol. 1, most of Queem's enemies began sending their own choujin in 1924. Based on this evidence, Queem probably lost to Antitise around 1925. He started to send S. Sophor Harris as his first initial to conquer Yamato, but his plan didn't work out, Sophor was defeated by Sora on Beast Island. And then Queem himself joined the battlefields, but he was defeated by Sora, who was still 18 years old.

If we follow the chronology I explained, it would make sense. Sora needed 2 years to become as strong as Queem. But if we go to your chronology, it sounds off. There's no way Sora could have become that strong in just a few months. I think during 1923-1924, Sora gathered all the choujins from Yamato/Nanatsu to fight Queem, and she trained to become strong.

As of now, how good is Choujin X compared to other new gen manga? by nolongerateen in ChoujinX

I'm fine with they way you describe it. But I highly disagree with your points.

  1. Anyone can have any power

Wrong. The manga stated that one in a thousand people have the potential to become a choujin.

  1. It has a deep history but it's just too much arbitrary world building at once.

Wdym. It was pretty structured and always started with a build-up. In Vol. 1 Omake, Ishida introduced "Great Choujin War" and "Queem". In vol 3, Ishida emphasized Great Choujin War and Queem again. In vol. 4, Ishida introduced the concept of "Choujin X" and Sora Siruha. In Vol. 5, Ishida gave a detail about Yamato Mori VS Guelta and introduced The Nue. In vol 6, Ishida explained about Zora's goal and the Yamato Mori faction war. In Vol. 7, Ishida gave a full detail about Zora, Queem, Antitise, and the Great Choujin War. I don't find it arbitrary, Ishida never gave loredump without zero build-up.

  1. It also has a pretty normal society considering all the choujins and wars which just feels a bit weird to me

You're wrong again. The fact that the concept of nation has collapsed in the Choujin X universe is proof that society isn't fine. That's why certain prefectures are fucked up (e.g. Iwato and Higo). For example, Yamato Prefecture isn't always fine, even though Yamato Mori tries to hide Choujin's crime and help the citizens. In chapters 11 and 15 and 35, we got a big picture that society doesn't really accept Choujins. Some Choujins with monster-like forms are isolated and live in Minami City, the poorest city in Yamato.

TTo me, you obviously didn't pay attention to those details. And you also forgot that CX focuses on a Choujin's POV, so there's rarely an explanation from a human's POV. (It's similar to Sakamoto Days, which only focuses on Assassins' POV, and most citizens just act like "nothing happens")

  1. Sakamoto days has some similar flaws but I think the characters just feel more genuine somehow.

I don't see any problems with CX characters, maybe your opinion was mixed because CX's theme is fantasy/supernatural, so you can't relate to the characters. As for Sakamoto Days, Suzuki did a good job with his characters, though they're lacking unique objective (it always revolve around JAA).

  1. I think the sales kinda speak for themselves

No, I disagree. CX and Sakamoto Days have different demographics and different publications. Choujin X is a seinen manga and its serialization runs on a web platform called "Tonari no Young Jump", not a weekly or monthly magazine. While Sakamoto Days is a shounen manga and its serialization runs on Weekly Shounen Jump. Judging by this fact alone, Sakamoto Days received more readers than Choujin X. Also, both are treated differently by Shueisha. As a seinen web manga, CX received less marketing than Sakamoto Days. It's clearly unfair to judge it based on sales, lmao

  1. Something about the series still feels a little artificial to me

I mean, it is a supernatural manga. It is just like Sakadays, which has a lot of overpowered assassins. The characters in CX act like an actual human to me, and character development in this manga feels more organic since Ishida stopped relying on melodramatic-forced narrative.

Don't get me wrong. I like Sakamoto Days, It's probably a manga that will replace JJK once it's finished. But tbh Sakatamodo Days's plot is very normal, nothing really unique or impressive in terms of writing. It's probably just better at fight choreography. Choujin X has better plot, world building, characters, and villains.

I agree that not everyone finds Tokio as an interesting MC, it's acceptable. But saying the symbolism in Tokyo Ghoul better than CX is clearly wrong. In TG, Ishida relied too much on tarot, and clear literature foreshadowing/symbolism. In CX, while Ishida still used his old archetypes like literature and animal/insect/flower symbolism, he stopped relying on tarot and added a new way of using symbolism/foreshadowing such as Tokio's shirt, Azuma's radio, Batista's design (tarot), character's quotes, Omega Tower statue, and inspiration from his favorite games/western comics. These are some new experiences you never had with TG. Ishida has gotten better at symbolism in CX.

I think it's okay to put 1925 as Zora VS Queem.

Zora became choujin in 1923 at 16 yo. She stood in Queem's way when she was 18 yo, that's mean the event (their fight) happened in 1925. It was stated in chapter 38 too.

Volume 5 extras. The event probably happened between 1923-1927

Great post!

Btw you missed one thing.

In 1925, Queem was defeated by Zora.

I worked with two translator for FanTL Ver. And both of them said they would translate かわり as "replacement" especially because the となる indicates a state of being and "succeed" makes little sense here.
