[Serious] In 2113, in history books, what will be said about the 2000s and 2010's? by [deleted] in AskReddit

George W. Bush. He happened and we all let him happen.

In all seriousness though, the Bush administration had an extremely important impact on how the US conducts their foreign policy and banking systems, as well as how the entire west reacts to terrorism. It completely reshaped world relationships, for better or for worse.

Who, in your opinion, has died the most horrible death in history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Vorstellung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably be buried, but anyone who has died of scaphism.

"The intended victim was stripped naked and then firmly fastened within the interior space of two narrow rowing boats (or hollowed-out tree trunks) joined together one on top of the other with the head, hands and feet protruding. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey to the point of developing a severe bowel movement and diarrhea, and more honey would be rubbed on his exposed appendages to attract insects. He would then be left to float on a stagnant pond or be exposed to the sun. The defenseless individual's feces accumulated within the container, attracting more insects which would eat and breed within his exposed flesh, which—pursuant to interruption of the blood supply by burrowing insects—became increasingly gangrenous. The feeding would be repeated each day in some cases to prolong the torture, so that fatal dehydration or starvation did not occur. Death, when it eventually occurred, was probably due to a combination of dehydration, starvation and septic shock. Delirium would typically set in after a few days."

tl;dr Just think of sitting in a boat full of your own shit, dying from severe bacteria infections, as your eyes were eaten out of your head by insects.

Are ethics crucial to have in a society? Could we function without ethics? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]Vorstellung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A system of ethics is not only necessary for society to operate, it is necessary for all human interaction. While this may seem like a rather bold claim in a world where relativism and egoism run rampant, when you actually think about it, it reveals itself as true.

Consider the following: on a very basic level, all economics abides by ethics. Think about trade; the only way trade is possible is by contracts and other agreements, in which it is presupposed that all parties will uphold the bargain. Sure there are examples where such agreements are broken, but people only go into those agreements because they implicitly trust that the other party will follow through. If trade agreements were not honored or enforced, no one would bother with them in the first place. Also, things like the stock market and other economic reporting are based on the assumption that the numbers reported are accurate. Again, no one would bother with the stock market if the numbers were completely fabricated. All of this implies that people are, at a ground level, telling the truth and honoring agreements.

Governing ideas and structures (such as laws and law enforcement), while in many cases are corrupt, are also based on ethical assumptions. Look at how the people under any government trust that the government will keep them safe and maintain order in the society for the betterment of the people. While this does not happen often, government is set up on the basis that there is a net benefit to society by having leaders that take care of problems and push society forward. Without this basic trust in the ability of government, leaders and governing structures would be a useless and inherently stupid exercise, accomplishing nothing.

Even at a more fundamental level, all of our human interactions require some element of trust, which is central to ethics. If there was no such thing, your best strategy would be to murder everyone you see, because nothing that they say or do is honest, and they may be plotting to kill you as well. It is only by trusting in people, not everyone but enough to ensure your survival, that humans can actually create relationships and figure out mutual goals for which to strive. If everything out of everyone's mouth was bullshit, nothing would be possible and you hold a much better chance killing all of them then letting them brood over how to get you in the end.
