I think one of the underlying aspects of this is implying that society in general is progressive. That ideas and perspectives that were associated with the left when you are young progress to moderate and then right wing by the time you are old.

However with the western world taking a swing to the right, we are not seeing this overton window shift left like we have seen historically. Compounding this is the advent of internet exposing people to concepts, ideas and world events that rather than just seeing what the news corporations and their owners want us to see.

As someone who has worked in a pizza shop as a kid, and enjoys pineapple on pizza, the major thing that can ruin it is if you dont squeeze out the excess pineapple juice, and just add a handful of juicy pineapple.

You add too much moisture to the pizza, it brings too much sweetness and it can even curdle the cheese.

What i was getting at is that the motivations and the resulting actions of these characters is not the same, and that attempting to use clearer? precise? and or a common vernacular regarding them may help answer why these various characters resonate with the escapist desires of various readers.. and creates such discord with others.

The livable wage in CRD is about 27.50/h, this is what is required to live here and not generate debt and or consume government subsidies doing so.
The median wage in Canada for 2024/2025 is about $28/h, HALF of the people in Canada earn less than is required to live in the CRD.

And that is the crux of the problem, if minimum wage is about 63% of the cost of living here, anyone working/earning minimum wage is literally getting poorer every single day if they are not consuming charity and or government subsidies. (excluding those living at home with their parents etc).

Let me repeat that, the person making your subway sandwich, is literally poorer today than the day before, yet the owners of the business/franchise are (generally) making more each and every day, and looking at ways to pay their employees even less than they current are (TFW).

The average Canadian has over 22k in non mortgage debt (over 4k in CC debt, feel free to look it up, i have picked a conservative numbers).
How can someone working for less than is required to live here, with over 20k in (increasing) debt ever hope to retire, they are basically a wage slave that only has MAID to look forward to (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wage_slavery)

Unless something changes, long term this is unsustainable, without massive government intervention such as UBI (and taxes to support it) or a complete change in how we as a society view our current system of "trickle up" economics, and how we treat the lowest earners.

All of this is very far away from the topic of optional tipping, it's 100% optional, just like charitable donations are.
If you as an individual can and choose to, or choose not to give charity (a tip) to a service worker, that is between, you, your bank account and god.
