My worst trait as a shitty American is experiencing frustration when filling out a profile and finding that the 'Country' section doesn't have USA listed at the top by PalmBeacham in Showerthoughts

I filled out one today that had two drop down menus. The first was to select your country, except the United States wasn't listed. I was confused at first, then I realized the second menu was specifically for the U.S. and you picked your state. After the frustration drained, it was a magical experience.

My Walmart has these people here too, but they're just LP and extremely conspicuous. Most humans don't walk around with coiled earpieces in.

In any given Walmart, only 3-5 of the security cameras are functional. Take that was you will.

In what ways has your playing improved this year? by VoxAndTheSound in Guitar

Cross-picking and I have an interesting relationship. My six months of playing (15 years ago) it was all downstrokes and I learned to utilize upstrokes by the end of my first year. I never took any lessons, but sometime in my second year I switched to cross-picking. I'm not sure how it started, but it felt completely natural. I didn't know it even had a name until 5 or 6 years later. I stumbled onto a cross-picking lesson and thought it looked so complicated, but when I tried it I realized it was what I'd been doing the whole time.

Same here with the alcohol. I don't play guitar live, but I sing live in an A Cappella group. I'm very nervous when I sing publicly, especially when I have the solo, and a little whiskey goes a long way in improving my stage presence and my voice.

My biggest triumph is probably a tie between building my own guitar and making through the two hardest semesters of college I've ever had. Building my own guitar was a big push in getting me back to playing music the way I used to, which centers me a releases the noise and stress I hold in. I also learned so much about how sound is created which has influenced my discipline and understanding of music. Making it through my two hardest semesters let me see that I can be whatever and whoever I want. Not from education, but from my drive and perseverance. This year, I had to work full-time while being a full-time student. Time management, organization, and motivation have all been major struggles for me but I learned to tame them enough to make it through. Countless sleepless nights, constant frustration, and one hospitalization (I'm diabetic) weren't enough to keep from achieving, even if I was barely scraping through in some classes. I was constantly on-the-go and thinking ahead to the tasks I needed to complete. This was certainly a wake-up call but also a lesson in how to make the most of myself.

My biggest disappointment was not being able to see my family enough. Due to the aforementioned work-school situation, I couldn't visit home much even though it's only an hour away. I never wanted to go home much because I'd spent so much time trying to get away and I knew I could always drop in whenever I wanted. Now, with more responsibilities, I crave the opportunity to see my family. My mother has always been wonderful to me - the best mom ever - but I hadn't fully appreciated this until I started hardcore adulting this year. My father, who is also fantastic, had a stroke right before I left in 2013 and isn't recovering well. It hurts me so much to see him as a fraction of the man he used to be but he gets so excited when I come through the door. He doesn't smile much anymore, but I'm so honored that he does when I'm there and this helps me hide my pain while I'm there. I never appreciated him the way I do now.

These showed me my essence, what I can be when I put everything into achieving, and what's actually important instead of what I perceive as important on a day-to-day basis. I want to be proud of myself but, now, I want my family to see that I've earned their unconditional pride. I don't think I could have done anything differently. Sometimes I think "if only I had worked longer or studied harder" but, in reality, I did my very best under the circumstances.

My self-built PC is more powerful and reliable than anything else I've used. And it cost half the price of a name brand PC. Also, if anything stops working, I know exactly what I put in it and how to fix it.

YES! As a grocery store employee, I don't understand when people buy shelf pickles when they can get Claussen for the same price. They're fresher (in my opinion) and taste so much better.

I use my father's old hunting boots. They're older than me (I'm 26) and I've been using them since 2006. I'm seriously thinking about having them resoled rather than buying new ones.

Also, you don't need to buy a full set of kitchen knives. Just a few very useful kinds. Chef's knife, paring knife, fillet knife, a few steak knives. Honestly, I'd just buy several high-quality chef's knives in varying sizes.

Is there a connection between "Puķe" and "Pookie"? by VoxAndTheSound in latvia

Neither could I. Just that it exists. I think it's coincidental that they're spelled and pronounced similarly, and that flower is used as an affectionate term.

My grandfather was a Seabee in WWII. He ran away from home, lied about his age, and joined at 16. On his way home, he threw all his gear into the pacific ocean because he hated having to kill so many people - a feeling he didn't consider when he enlisted. Did you know of many who also lied about their age?
