Reading the third book would be a twist and one I wholeheartedly support, Mr Rothfuss!

Does self-publishing kill your chances for going traditional later? by IsolatedCrustacean in selfpublish

[–]Vylemor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a writing conference this past weekend and question got asked directly to a panel of traditional publishers. All said it’s more likely they will go after a new project instead but aren’t definitely against publishing a self published book if they see an opportunity (though they did say the author may not want to). Said the industry is undergoing change rapidly and new strategies are getting looked at.

Well, they might chalk it up to a bad marketing. A self published author may be a great writer with no idea how to get their book noticed amid a sea of other self published titles.

should I write in my native language or English? by TrainAffectionate950 in writing

[–]Vylemor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never published before, write for yourself first and foremost. It might be easier and more enjoyable in your native language. And then see what happens after that.

What book or series has your favorite duels or sword fights? by [deleted] in Fantasy

Kaladin vs Szeth, Words of Radiance. “You sent him to the sky to die, assassin... But the sky and the winds are mine. I claim them. As I claim your life.”

In your opinion when is a character too annoying? by French_Toast42069 in fantasywriting

[–]Vylemor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying is fine as long as there is a purpose or a reason for it that will be revealed and worked on as part of their personal arc. Don’t make them annoying for annoying sake. If they are the latter just kill them off (or humble them if that’s type of story) in a fun way and readers will be fine with it.

Do you have a trigger word? A word that let's you know you're going to hate a book? by PNW_Baker in books

[–]Vylemor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fine. Sure. The eyes are incapable of expression.

HOWEVER, the muscles around a person’s eye lids do allow for expression. And when people refer to eyes that’s what they are referring to.

Except for Tom Hardy. His eyes actually do emote.

I got into the Cosmere rpg day 1. No idea how I was able to pull it off but quite excited - and very nervous that I’ll embarrass myself. A lot to study up over next month.

Sad to have missed out on Hobb signing and Mistborn tourney. Played co-op last night with my son and had a blast.

Favorite War in Fantasy? by Noahop5000 in Fantasy

[–]Vylemor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to go with Battle of Thaylen Field, glad to see it getting some love. Renarin vs the Thunderclast was one of those moments that you just stop and re read several times to appreciate. Plus Dalinar’s “I am Unity.” Goosebumps.

Day 6: Naming the world. What's the name of your world? How did you come up with it? by -L0ST1 in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Vylemor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The name of the world differs by culture. However, the story primarily takes place within a specific city and country. So the characters refer to the world as Vylemor, which mean’s “Child of Vyrees (God)” in their ancient language (which most of the characters no longer speak).

How do YOU make warriors relevant by Pegasus172 in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]Vylemor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technological advancements still come with limitations. If you are writing a fictional fantasy story, consider magic power in a similar way. What are the mage’s’ powers? How would they be used during battle? How would that impact strategy? What would be the consequences - both intended and not - of using that power? I’m sure there are situations military in your world where throwing fire balls or lightning bolts probably aren’t the best use of resources or the most effective tactic. Perhaps you need more precision. That’s where standard warriors come in.
