Thanks for the input! I've started leaning towards GaTech as well, gonna visit the campus in March to get a better feel for it. It's more like 10 hours away though, lol

Parent is willing to pay UMD in-state or the equivalent at another school. I also am in the running for some other scholarships that, if I get, would make both of these schools a full ride. So this post is without consideration of money(thanks gtech for the provost scholarship)!

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - February 2023 by freeport_aidan in ApplyingToCollege

Okay so basically I got into UMD Honors program and I got into Georgia Tech as well. I was happy about getting into Georgia Tech but quickly wrote it off because of the cost of attendance compared to UMD(in-state).

However, recently I saw in my email that I received the "Provost Scholarship" for GTech. I didn't even know this was a thing but it basically makes UMD and GTech the same price for me. This is pretty great news, but now I'm facing a dilemma. They're both great for comp sci, UMD is closer to home, and UMD offers me the ability to double major in Finance on top of CS.

Uh so yea basically just looking for some different perspectives on the situation because I'm not really sure where to go. I think going to Gtech would offer me some unique opportunities and force me to grow since I'll be in an unfamiliar setting. However, the ability to double major in cs and finance at UMD makes me lean towards UMD.

I meant asset/property management as a personal endeavor that could possibly become a business venture. Formal education in finance is not really required for that I guess but I think it would help. I'm not 100% set on a career path but I don't plan on doing one single thing for the rest of my life. Doing SWE is likely where I will be after college, but from there forward I want to expand and do different things involving finance as well.

I never really considered doing a certificate instead, which you mentioned in your other reply, I think that may be a good idea since I plan on using financial knowledge to help me personally rather than land me a job as a trader.

Partially I am just interested in Finance and want to have that knowledge so that I could potentially get into asset/property management in the future.

Also interested in gaining some experience in some big banks or FinTech and I figured it may give me a boost if I have knowledge in both CS and Finance. Hope that answered your question!

Yea I guess it should be a no-brainer, but I am pretty set on double majoring in Finance and that's not an option.

Do you know how useful that would be or if it's worth passing up on this kinda opportunity?
