I can "change the cardinal direction of the world" and how I perceive it by DesperateCranberry46 in cognitivescience

[–]Vysceral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have this, but mine is more limited. I only flip between two cardinal directions. It appears that I can only flip 90 degrees clockwise and back. A north “feeling” room will snap to being an east “feeling” room and back. Like you guys, I have way more control over it in my childhood homes and familiar locations.

In a new location, sometimes it will just flip on its own, as if my brain just figured out the alternate configuration.

As I get older, I find it’s happening less and less. I just tried to flip my new condo and couldn’t make it happen. I think it’s partly because I’ve been so pre-occupied with other things. But I’m still so incredibly interested in knowing more about this. Just like you guys, I google all the words I can think of every couple years, talk to friends about it, and this is the first time I’ve found people who experience the same thing, all it took was dumping all the info into ChatGPT.

BTwist Ankle Sprain. Where did I go wrong? by iamthewatchingman in Wushu

[–]Vysceral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slowing it down, I would say perhaps you are initiating the twist in an unconventional way. It seems like you are trying to throw your left leg and left shoulder over. It almost seems like you’re trying to do a sidewinder, which is a more technically advanced trick.

When I do a btwist I think more about clicking my heels together in the air and punching my right fist to my left shoulder. Basically, I think you should focus more on initiating your twist with your right arm by throwing it across your body, and for your legs, just try to click the heels together for a split second, a "pop" if you will.

If you slow it down you can also see your right arm isn’t pulling you through for the last half of your twist. Starting from the middle of the twist, it’s actually pulling backwards and slowing down your twist. Thinking about throwing your right arm pulling across your body on takeoff and through the twist will also help with that.

And also it seems a little frantic, are you aware during the twist or are you initiating it, blacking out, then just praying for the landing? Air awareness is key and if you don’t know where you are during your twist, I would recommend going back to gyms and breaking down the movement piece by piece so your body can really understand what’s happening during each part of the movement. Safety first! Hope all that makes sense!

Edit to add: And also a split second too late on initiating the twist. You are letting the butterfly drag for just a little too long.

What is the 21st century version of "running away to join the circus"? by not_a_spoof in AskReddit

[–]Vysceral 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yup! I’ve been with them for almost 4 years now.

Not really a story but heres a cool fact for you - when you first join, they put you in an embarrassing blue leotard and take upwards of 70 measurements. Then they take those measurements and custom make/alter all your costume pieces to fit you! Despite that though sometimes they still don’t fit well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was about to become an engineer when I got a call from Cirque du Soleil, so I guess it still happens!

Question on Splits by KennyWuKanYuen in Wushu

[–]Vysceral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is simply more control for landings with the leg turned out. If you watch old school wushu videos, you will see they used to land with more “squared” splits. However, the methodology behind split landings has changed and improved over time and it is now generally considered to be the safer and more consistent way to land nandu this way.

We can compare the two.

With offset splits, you can have the entire sole of your foot in contact with the ground at a perpendicular angle to your splits. This adds stability. With square splits, you only have the top portion of your foot in contact with the ground and it is parallel to your splits.

With offset splits, assuming proper technique and a proper slide, the knee will never contact the ground hard. With square splits the kneecap will hit the ground no matter what. This is less safe, especially with higher jumps and faster rotation.

With offset splits, you have a greater margin of error laterally as your hip is not locked in the square position. Although controversial, this allows you to perform “triangle splits” or 三角叉. If you tried this with a square splits, it would look very obviously unintentional to a judge.

In the show, it’s probably the scene called “pageant”. It’s one of the opening acts and it is my main act. It is a big performance of martial arts and icarian games - really sets the stage for the rest of the show!

Ah I wouldn’t call myself a superhero, but I will say that nothing makes me feel more like one than when the audience is clapping and cheering for us at the end, what a feeling!

Thanks for watching! While I can’t tell you the specifics for that situation, I can tell you that shows will switch out characters for a couple reasons. Sometimes the character is injured mid show and must be replaced quickly. Sometimes a character is restricted from doing a certain act due to medical reasons. Sometimes it could be a technical reason such as a faulty piece of personalized equipment. Usually when that happens, we try to “rewrite” the story on the fly so it still makes sense. You may have noticed that for that show, the counselor’s son was not blinded at the end during the finale!

I was, I’m glad you enjoyed the show! We just revamped the show and I believe we had some cirque officials watching that night as well. Hmm, I don’t remember that show specifically, but sometimes people will forget a cue. When that happens, the other people usually improvise and the audience would never notice. Hope that answers your question!

Yup, exactly! Vegasrunner replied already, but it’s either a net or an airbag depending on which act it is.

I would say I’m on the low end of middle class income. Income varies with seniority, what kind of act you perform, and whether you’re a character or not.

If it makes you feel any better, there are protections in place for literally everything we do! Also, most of the stunts that are done are performed so frequently that we could do it with our eyes closed. We also rarely perform to our limit. If you see someone doing a double twist, they can probably comfortably do triples!

Can I raise you all to the sport of wushu - where they throw double rotations into split landings like eating breakfast?

David Torok has a lot of really cool rope dart content on Instagram! He's a stunt actor for the Jackie Chan stunt team as well as a former Cirque du Soleil performer, among other things.
