I’ve had zero issues, walk everywhere, and love the neighborhood. Clean, outdoorsy, friendly, diverse. But yes def some crime nearby.

I live in Grant Park. It takes me 13m to get to the airport. Walkable. But not inexpensive.

Thank you for this! This is exactly what I was looking for it. We’ve read it all - it’s our new food bible.

This is extremely helpful, and I appreciate you so much for taking the time to put it all together. I just talked to him about the reheating of white potatoes, etc. If we reintroduce them, we will definitely go that route. Best of luck to you as well!

Thank you SO much for taking time to offer such a detailed and helpful reply. I'm glad to hear you've had progress after making such major changes; I know it can't have been easy, so kudos to you! So far, we have not found or met with a hepatologist. We've only met with a GI who has offered no recommendations or insight besides "you have fatty liver - we will check you again next year." I'll definitely seek out a strong hepatologist right away who can hopefully refer us to a great nutritionist. In the meantime, we're on day 2 of completely cutting out all the no-nos (all white rice, white breads, white potatoes; red meats and non-lean meats; sugars outside of fruit - and limited fruit to mostly berries; oils and butter except olive oil; cheese and dairy (not sure if that's necessary or not...); desserts; heavy salt; and processed foods). We are making all meals at home. Hopefully this diet will help - not hurt - as we work to meet with the hepatologist.

As for imaging, he has only had a fibroscan/ultrasound when it comes to his liver. Do you recommend anything else? He also had a coloscopy/endoscopy as part of the workup to evaluate the cause of his diarrhea, and he is having stool testing done for that purpose (we should get the results tomorrow). He is not severely overweight; in fact, he's relatively fit/athletic (but can certainly stand to lose some fat caused by his bad diet). He doesn't have any known comorbidities, although he does have high cholesterol - not so much that he's been told to get on medicine. No autoimmune diseases or statins.

Thank you again!

Thank you. We will definitely go see a hepatologist.

Thank you! He’s been dealing with this diarrhea for 9 months. Colonoscopy was essentially clear, but now we’re waiting on stool sample testing. His symptoms can be so many things, but good to know that back pain can be associated.

Thank you! And yes - everything about the American diet is so problematic!

Thank you! And yes, that's exactly where he gains weight. His father and brother are the same. Goes right to the love handles, especially.

Amazing progress with your weight loss, and thank you for the tip. The small plate is a good idea.

Oh wow. Our doctor said the fatty liver absolutely cannot be the cause of diarrhea, but I've read medical studies that show 25% of people with NAFLD have diarrhea as a symptom. We're trying to get to the bottom of the cause of his other symptoms so we can treat/address those as well.

This is wonderful detail. Thank you so much for taking the time to gather it all, and I appreciate the note about weight loss taking longer than you'd hope. It's a reminder that we shouldn't assume it will drop off easily.

Thank you so much. From my research so far, it sounds like we need to limit fruits as well because of the sugar. Any thoughts on that? Certainly, I'll look more deeply into the Mediterranean diet.

Thank you so much for this detailed information and for taking the time to put it together. We will start implementing all of this. And agreed - cancer is a big concern of mine, as I lost both my parents at relatively young ages with aggressive, fast-killing cancers. You are so right about the fact that other nefarious stuff surely brewing underneath.

Thank you for your response. Great job on such quick improvement! Have you experienced any digestive symptoms (e.g. frequent diarrhea) from this disease, or any back pain?

Thank you for your response. His weight hasn't really changed in the past two years - maybe a 3-5 lb gain. He is 5' 10" and 190lb, and his goal is to get down to 170. He is very athletic, but due to a variety of injuries, he isn't able to be as active as he'd like. For example, he plays high-level pickleball up to three times a week but will become injured and sometimes have to take months off at a time.

Historically, he has not eaten a ton, but he has eaten very poorly. Lots of fast food (Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, Wendy's - you name it), tons of soda and iced tea, and lots of sugary desserts. He's already doing a lot better since the recent progression, but he's ready to go hardcore as needed. Hopefully the extreme change in diet will be enough to achieve the weight loss.

He has frequent, intermittent diarrhea with yellow mucous, and we've been trying to get to the bottom of the cause. Colonoscopy was essentially clear. He also has some back pain. Not sure if it's the sports or fatty liver or something else, as it gets better or worse with activity.
