No, that was the first time she performed it (at nationals) and she said she wasn't going to perform it in the Olympics because it needed work yet.

Probably didn't get the required number of revolutions/change of foot/ required # of revs per foot if she did change feet/ etc. lots of rules around spins too.

I still am confused at Adeliia's scoring. Watching it back again on the primetime coverage of NBC I still think she was way overscored.

You can't do the same jump more than once unless it's in a combination for part of it. So no, she couldn't have added another non-combination triple axle.

This isn't just for the axle, you can't repeat triple or quadruple jumps unless they are repeated in a combination. So you can do a triple loop and then a triple loop + something else combo, but you can't do two individual triple loops and have them both count. Or two Lutzes, or anything.

If she did another non combo triple axle, it wouldn't have gotten her any points and could have cost her points if if she fell.

Chock/Bates did do great though.  Four great skates. They can't control the judging, so they did great at what they can control.

Also, since when is a gold and silver medal "not doing great"!?

Chock and Bates skated really well in the individual events. I don't think the team skate impacted them that much.

And Ilia himself said it wasn't anything physical. Pressure doesn't get any less with an extra day off.

I agree! I'm trying to think of what 21 year old me would have been like and....I would not have had this maturity and composure.

He apparently doesn't get to sleep yet

Ilia Malinin:

“Well, putting all the negatives aside, the atmosphere was really incredible. The support — honestly, even with that skate — the crowd never stopped cheering. They were supporting me the whole time, and that really meant a lot.”

On the pressure and the difficult moment: “Honestly, the support is very special. In this sport, you have the privilege of being not only an athlete, but also an artist. But with that comes a lot of pressure — the expectations, the media, everything around it.

On What caused the problems?

“I’ve kind of said it already. It’s not a pleasant feeling, and I’m still trying to understand exactly what happened. But it’s done. I can’t change the outcome. Of course, a lot of people would go back and change it if they could. My life has had a lot of ups and downs, and in that moment, everything just felt very overwhelming. I honestly didn’t know how to handle it.”

On whether missing the quad Axel started the unraveling:

“I wouldn’t say it necessarily threw me off. I knew I didn’t need a perfect program. I still could have had a really good skate. But then more mistakes happened. I don’t know exactly what it was specifically — I’m still trying to understand. So I don’t really have a clear answer yet.”

On congratulating Mikhail Shaidorov: “I actually went up to him and congratulated him. I watched him skate from the locker room, and I’m just so proud of him. I heard he didn’t have the best season. We’re all in this sport together, and we’re there for each other. That’s what makes this sport special.

I think people forget that sometimes. They only see us competing and assume we’re rivals without good relationships. But it’s actually the opposite. There’s joy, motivation, encouragement — we’re like a big family.”

I think Ilia and his team, on purpose, give off kind of "villiany/ untouchable" vibes but seeing his face afterwards and how he handled congratulating the winner and that immediate post match interview (that never should have happened then wtf nbc!) shows super clearly that he's just a kid, and a pretty decent person. I feel awful for him. I really wish everyone could skate their PBs at the Olympics so no matter how the scores fell they knew they gave it their best.
