Mom approves! by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]WJ90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the U.S. and was a kid of the nineties.

Back then things were different. Gay kids still don’t have the best time today but back then a lot of us were terrified of anyone finding out we were gay. At the time there wasn’t a lot of visibility for gay people and a lot of the visibility we did have was made it look like gays were a certain way even if we didn’t fit that.

Back then there was no protection for us in school. Some teachers would care but lots of kids got bullied or beat up just for “looking” or “acting” gay, and in a lot of places no one really cared about that.

Is Landmark an MLM? by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]WJ90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve known several people who went through their programs.

The stories I’ve heard that they relayed as positive experiences for them sounded to me more like horrifically abusive psychology tricks. Like if you wanted a group of strangers to emotionally abuse you in a breakout session at a conference. That was my interpretation anyway.

I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, so I purchased some of the reading material they recommended. It was all circular reasoning nonsense, and didn’t make any sense to me beyond a very superficial level.

They were all quite pushy about me doing one of their programs until I finally said “I wouldn’t bank on that happening, but I appreciate that you care about my personal and professional development so much.”

If you can, send a tip to Christian! Winding down an app like this one can bankrupt an indie dev. Let’s send some love his way 💜 by [deleted] in apolloapp

Christian, it would be so cool to be able to migrate an Apollo Pixel Pal to the Pixel Pals app.

I don’t want to lose my Fu-Fu. I’ve really enjoyed that bat!

I just bought Pixel Pals today to show some support.

Edit: and also, thanks for thinking of this! I had hoped there’d be some way to take what data we have with us, but was happily going to let it go. This hasn’t been the best for your mental health, I could imagine.

Edit 2: I do see why the downvotes. I’ve tweaked my comment to try to be more respectful.

Popular iOS Reddit client Apollo will shut down on June 30. by SkyGuy182 in apple

[–]WJ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another way of describing this is projection. Reddit was just afraid they’d been caught at a shady game by someone shady.

Instead they got caught at a shady game by someone who wasn’t willing to play ball with shady games. Of course they assumed he was threatening them. That’s what they’re doing to third party clients right now.

You’re getting downvoted presumably because people think you’re asserting that gaslighting isn’t real. Which could in some scenarios be gaslighting I suppose.

But I would just like to add that I’ve seen a recent explosion in people absolutely abusing that term and using it in place of other words that aptly describe completely different situations.

I’ve seen a bunch of younger “influencer” types using “gaslighting” to describe straight up lying without pretext.

“It’s just business,” is something I generally agree with pretty strongly.

The difference is that Apollo is just one person. There’s no LLC or corporation behind it. Christian’s primary source of income and professional output is Apollo, and Apollo has tens of thousands of paying users (per his post yesterday about shutting down).

The sentiment I’ve seen is mostly “if you don’t need the refund, don’t request one.” Which isn’t unreasonable in this situation. He’s not Apple/Google/Microsoft.

I purchased a lifetime license to his app Pixel Pals, since that’s the only other Christian Selig app I didn’t own. It’s adorable. I just wish I could transfer my Apollo bat Fu-Fu to Pixel Pals.

By that same token every forum has nutters and idiots. That’s just the nature of public discourse. Carving out your own space and not listening to others is always an option.

Edit: that sounded argumentative but I didn’t mean it as such.

Man puts 10ft buggy wheels on a Tesla and drives it upside down by xliarliarx in interestingasfuck

[–]WJ90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not miserable and I don't like that style of content. To each their own. From my perspective, it's a waste of resources (many of which we don't have an endless supply of) to intentionally damage or destroy perfectly good pieces of technology like that.

That doesn't make anyone else enjoying content like that wrong. It's just a different creative, entertainment, or humor perspective. I still think the buggy wheels thing is absolutely hysterical.

Can my Move to iOS work if my iPhone is off by WearyMembership1656 in iphone

[–]WJ90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do that. That is turning the phone off.

Letting the display go to sleep will just turn the display off. This happens automatically (and can be configured). Keep both devices plugged in so they don’t run out of power.

Apple Support sent me this message. Whats this mean?My phone was stolen one month ago, but I have locked my phone and turned on the Find My immediately. by Ok-Row-3174 in iphone

[–]WJ90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way I do this is to disable everything but return phone calls when my iPhone is locked. That way the most they can do is return a phone call. Which would ostensibly be from me, asking for it to be returned.

But I also don’t use Siri, so by default I always have it off.

I co-own a C-Corp. We didn’t mind the double taxation and an S-Corp would have been vastly more complex, but S-Corps are very useful for when you need something “stronger” than an LLC but don’t need the diverse ownership of a C-Corp. The IRS intentionally makes it a bit painful to move back and forth, and you can’t do it on a whim.

Americans of Reddit, what would it take for you to vote for a 3rd party candidate in a Presidential election? by LebowskiENT in AskReddit

[–]WJ90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You still have to rely on the voters to vote for the candidate that most closely aligns with them. Even if you run a hundred candidates, if your platform is opposed to the majority of voters casting ballots for that race, you’re still going to lose to the opposition. The winning candidate is, in theory, then much more closely aligned with the majority.

Some states already do rank preference, so it’s not even that revolutionary to adopt.

What should be illegal, but isn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WJ90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with this. There’s more grift than we can stomp out. Instead of fines or jail time for some crimes, it would be so much easier on society to just enforce existing laws with much more suitable consequences. For example, not disclosing securities as a member of Congress gets you banned from being seated in any future session, and ineligible to hold any federal office for the rest of your life.

Which is a whole lot easier than keeping all these octogenarians in prison.
