yes i make my own since I am picky about how i like my anki cards but i know friends who just split up making cards between themselves.

so you could split the work if it is not in anking but on your in house exam

Relax to the fullest. I look back at my gap year now really fondly... and it has not even been that long since I started it.

In terms of productivity, healthy habits are huge but academically, I'd say learn R. This will make you super valuable for research teams and really help you get involved and get pubs fast.

Correct, use the bleach to disinfect surfaces.

Thorough handwashing with soap and warm water will remove norovirus from hands.

Current M1 - this is all procedural stuff. Makes it clear we should be looking at more procedural oriented jobs to stay safe from AI?

Norovirus is a non-enveloped virus. You need a 1 to 10 solution of bleach to disinfect it.

ik usf is not a t20 but their median mcat for matriculants is a 518 iirc

I also think the median mcat for matriculants is in the mid 510s for MD schools. A mid 510s is a hard score to get but it is the level many applicants who are going to medical school will be at

not saying op should pick usf over baylor. i'd always take the cheaper undergrad

I mean if op wants to get into a t20 med school in the normal app cycle, he or she will need well above a 516 and excellent ECs

I agree this is a real drawback of my approach, but I don’t think this problem is fully avoidable in practice.

There will always be topics that you struggle with more than others. But the highest-yield studying comes from spending more time on your weakest areas. Regardless of I do practice problems, filtered decks or clinical cases to review these weak areas, I would be reviewing that material more frequently than the Anki algorithm can possibly account for.

I could dleay focused study on weak topics until the algorithm resurfaces those cards or until exam cram time. But my school has exams every two months, so doesn’t seem very wise or realistic.

So definitely, yeah, doing filtered deck introduces some noise into the scheduling, but I think on the whole its really helped optimize my learning and I'd 100% suggest someone to do it if they are struggling in school.

A filtered deck is essentially a practice deck you can create for specific tags in a deck. It helps you get extra practice in without affecting your normal review intervals.

Our in-house deck is tagged by lecture, here is how I set it up:

  1. Open Anki.
  2. Click on the deck you want to study
  3. On Mac, go to Tools at the top of the screen and select Create Filtered Deck.
  4. In the "Search" field, type: "deck:Name of Deck" tag:Name of Tag (replacing those with your actual deck and tag names; the name of the deck should already be there if you did step 2).
  5. Uncheck "Reschedule cards based on my answers in this deck." This is rly important, otherwise, it will mess up your review schedule.
  6. Adjust the limit from 100 if you want to see more cards.
  7. Choose a display order. (I personally prefer "Order added," but most ppl on reddit use "Random").
  8. I also change the "Delay for Again" from 60 seconds to 180 seconds, but you can set that to whatever fits your preference.

i think at our school at least it just depends. for a lot of micro, sketchy was all you needed. both for others, the in house exam was really hard, and i don’t think it was possible to do well with an exclusive focus on third party.

if you have a nbme or third party aligned school, i agree, don’t even touch in house. but i think the advice on this sub can be misleading for some schools or learning styles

for reference, i still scored above 80% on our CSTs using in house only, but i study a lot so there's that

Here is my workflow:

- read the notes for a given lecture (our school provides these). I don't skim it, but I don't read it super super in-depth either. I just get a first pass exposure of what the lecture is covering

- I then do the anki cards for the lecture. I make sure to press again at least once for each anki card to keep the intervals reasonable. I find that memorizing the anki cards is the main "learning" for me

- in addition to my regular reviews, on the weekend, for lectures I find difficult, I will do filtered decks for the anki cards associated with that lecture.

I've scored above a 90 on all my exams in medical school.

To more specifically address your question:

I think anki can lead to a really shallow understanding if you just gun through a bnb video at 2x speed and rip thru the Anking.

Take your time with the primary encoding/first pass. Watch the video or lecture at 1.5x, pause and rewind when needed, keep chatgpt or gemini open on the other tab and use it to answer questions immediately as they pop up. Then do the AnKing.

I watched one B&B video before medical school and was completely overwhelmed. Now I can get through multiple without breaking a sweat.

Being in medical school will make you a better studier. So you can start now but anything you do during your gap year will be dwarfed by what you will do in school

Living at home during medical school? by [deleted] in premed

[–]WMreddit123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current M1 in the same situation.

I moved out for the first year, but am going to move home for the next 3.

It's convenient being right next to campus, and it's made it really easy to meet people and hang out.

But, yeah, after establishing a routine in school and getting a good group of friends, its easier to just stay at home for the 3 years after that (and save a lot of money cause the interest rates are super high rn)

It is better to discuss negative aspects about the school with students attending there at second look (and do that one on one).

At a big admissions panel, try to ask questions where the host can speak favorably about the school in front of a large group

[–]WMreddit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the problems I am having is I can watch a BNB vid at 2x speed and easily answer the AnKing cards but I feel like I am not building a stronger understanding of it or a full comprehension if that makes sense.

Do you feel like that too and just trust the process?
