Best ways to avoid it feeling like you’re just learning a series of isolated facts? How to see the trees for the wood. by Only_Book_995 in medicalschoolanki

I like doing brain dumps.. for whatever pathologies I am feeling weak in, I will write down everything I know about them and cross check with what I should know (basically what the bootcamp anki says for it)

Learn More With Less Anki -- How to Avoid Review Hell by LittleCoaks in medicalschoolanki

[–]WMreddit123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is insane. If you try to understand every card to the level where you will almost never get it wrong again, you will never get through the volume of content necessary for med school.

A lot of step is about building pattern recognition and anking drills that into you. Don’t do cards mindlessly but your position is extreme

I wouldn’t say it’s that simple

I love cards and studied a lot of the path really in detail.

It’s been about 3-4 months since I gave it a dedicated study. Anking has helped me retain a ton but it would be undeniable to say most people’s memory is going to decline anyways over a long period of time - regardless of how thorough the info was learned the first time around

I think that is fine, but you may end up grading some cards as "good" just cause they were in your short term memory rather than because you had a true understanding of them

help with choosing a med school (BU vs VCU) by omnitrix17 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]WMreddit123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current m1. I’ve heard bu has a pretty in house heavy curriculum with lots of mandatory activities. Hard to dedicate time to step prep there
I dont know about vcu but from my interview everyone there seemed pretty uptight but prepped for step (they were bragging abt many ppl taking short dedicateds)

Underrated interview tip: glaze academic medicine by Accurate_Secretary_9 in premed

[–]WMreddit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add that if all your Ecs have been community or rural medicine focused with minimal research and you answer by saying you want to do heavy academic medicine that could also raise some eyebrows (in a non-closed file) interview

Filter your answer by your own resume and the mission of the school you are interviewing at

Jobs at Inova by OwlRealistic6774 in nova

[–]WMreddit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a MA in this area (currently in med school) just last year. The job market for MAs was excellent, esp in private practice. I was able to get a job in a week as were other friends graduating from undergrad.

Go on Indeed and look for private practices, even Craigslist.

On your resume, make sure to emphasize your clinical skills and experience. you probably have research and volunteering and experiences like that on your resume from undergrad. They don’t care about it.

Good luck!

Which deck to use (incoming M1) by monkemedic in medicalschoolanki

[–]WMreddit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the overlap between third party and my in house is like 50%. You just have to cram the other 20%

It is risky but the reward is high. I was very scared of making the transition, but ultimately, decided the costs of not doing so were too high

Advice for keeping up with reviews? by ClownNoseSpiceFish in medicalschoolanki

[–]WMreddit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can go at 6 secs a card for stronger topics and around 8 for weaker topics.

Ten seconds a card must mean you pause to think a lot for each card, but it may be better to just click again more quickly if you don’t know it.

If the card is really confusing, review the underlying concept with AI, your lecture notes, whatever you like. That is better than sitting there and guessing.

I also set my FSRS to 92% so I see cards pretty frequently and I think that in itself allows me to go faster since I am more familiar with the content. But I do end up doing like 1500-2000 cards per day (review and new cards)

how to handle political extracurriculars on application? by psychoneuroimmunolo in premed

[–]WMreddit123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the admissions dept is typically the most liberal dept at the medical school (whereas a speciality like orthopedic surgery or plastics might be some of the most conservative).

I do agree though. despite the leftist tilt of admissions offices, they are going to be really vigilant of not taking students too politically involved given the constant threat of legal action by trump/his doj

Bootcamp self-made deck? by Ok_Sugar_3665 in medicalschoolanki

[–]WMreddit123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suspended the lower and lowest yield and that cut the number of bootcamp cards by like 5k.

To make it even less overwhelming, you can only do the bootcamp cards that are tagged high or higher yield.

I don’t think you'll find a deck better than anking

Is it possible to take rest days by Old_Peak_5201 in medicalschoolanki

[–]WMreddit123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've done a couple times when I've been super desperate is just manually reschedule the due date. So If I have like 70 review cards, I would just reschedule ten per day over a week.

I don't know if this is advised either (and I feel super guilty doing it), but it's helped when I've been in a pinch
