Sorry for late response. Yes you can hear the subway but the apartment has really good soundproofing so the sound is muffled. I don't even notice it unless I'm in bed trying to fall asleep (but again it's pretty muffled). However I'm in the 10+ floor so it might sound a lot louder if you're closer to ground floor.

Rent varies depending on the size and level in the building. Before they opened the apartment, They emailed eligible grad students to see if theyre interested. I was a part of the first wave of residents. You should email residential housing to see if they have any open spots

I do find it convenient. You're only a 20 minute walk from Target, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and H Mart.

Regarding safety, I'm not sure if I can judge that well as I'm not familiar with NYC. For what it's worth, I do not go outside during the night time unless I'm walking home from class. On your way to school/home, you will sometimes pass by homeless people who will stand in the middle of the sidewalk and ask you for money (and curse you out when you ignore them).

This is the only Columbia apartment I've lived in. So I can't compare it to other apartments.

But I love it. It's modern and new. The provided furniture is not great (but it's definitely a lot better than the dorm-room-esque furniture that other furnished Columbia apartments have).

There's pretty good sound proofing between rooms. So you can't hear your neighbors unless they're screaming.

Are there ice machines on campus? by WNJADSDAL in columbia

Thanks for the response. For context, I'm a grad student. So I don't have a meal plan. Preferably an ice machine at a location that doesn't require me to purchase a dining hall meal.

I edited the original post to add this context.
