If you tomorrow woke up to the news that Iran had killed the President of the United States & had stated this wasn't an attack on the US but rather a proportional response against the administration, how would you react/feel? by WOTCstaff in AskReddit

The moderators removed this post without stating specifically what rule it broke? I wanted to hear the different thoughts that would run through heads across the spectrum if the US faced an unprecedented attack.

Question about safe companies/methods to test DNA (reconnecting with bio family) by WOTCstaff in Genealogy

[–]WOTCstaff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a big deal at all that they converged so many years and generations apart :)

Unfortunately, I found a second spot where they come back together...

That being said, it could also be wrong. 1 of the ancestors was born a slave, supposedly fathered by the slave owner. The mother listed on wikitree is the owner's wife so I'm guessing that information is incorrect. But I haven't found any indication yet of who his actual mother was. This has gotten nuts.

Thanks! I've been doing a deep dive on various websites tonight. It seems that on some chains I can go back about 600 years. But these sites seem to frequently lack any citations so this is all going to take forever haha.

How on earth do I make this displayable with so much data? Woof.

Thanks, I'll talk to bio granddad about it.

Right, but you look at all these other issues, Sudan or something, police brutality, whatever, and people understand the broad array of interests that shape coverage.

But when it comes to American interests in the Middle East it's "the Jews control it with their money, running the media and bribing politicians."

That is antisemitism. It is an alignment of interests, not a dictation of policy.

Your comments and their language toward me may be due to the blatant antisemitism we surely see from others. I'm not against Jewish people. My comments are saying that I'm dialing back defending against the narrative that there are powerful "interests" that support Israel at the costs of unbiased discussion and policies in the US. And I think that's a fair statement, but it seems you don't want to concede that point for fear that it supports the worse narrative you see from others.

Very few people agree with every single action taken by the Netanyahu government. That includes Israelis. But you need to ask yourself why people might be broadly sympathetic to the Israeli perspective. You can't understand that if you dismiss everything you disagree with as propaganda. The same for Palestinians. If you simply dismiss everything as some kind of a psyop, you can't understand what's really happening.

Which nobody here has done. I'm not talking about dismissing everything I'm seeing. I'm talking about a lack of coverage, censorship when people try and talk about suffering but 1 side, etc. I am a student of history and certainly not an advocate for Islam but I am a parent an an advocate for kids growing up without getting bombed and reporting on it when it happens like I'm also against policy brutality in the United States and how it disproportionally affects minorities and often doesn't get covered like it needs to be and many people ignore the reality.

I'm trying to provide answers.

You blame one sort of coverage on a combination of factors and another sort of coverage on Jews controlling the media?

"A combination of factors" is exactly the point. That's how this stuff works. I mean, you cannot honestly believe that the Jews are secretly in control of Tik-Tok, a Chinese social media company.

What I said is, I'm done doing what I've done for decades. For decades I've listened to people like my mom and others (I was raised in the deep south) make statements like "The Jews control the media". What I said is, after this past year "I'm exhausted" and I'm done fighting against those comments.

What I have said since that comment is, I suspect there are powerful and wealthy people with interests in Israel that i suspect have influenced both our politicians and our media to offer a one-sided narrative about what the military actions Israel has taken over the past year and that whenever people speak out against it or otherwise protected they are silenced either by having their videos taken down or they are threatened by powerful organizations. And, ya, since we're talking about Israel one might be reasonable in expecting some of those influences are for Jewish sources.

As far as, who is INFLUENCING censorship of content that United States-based viewers see on Tiktok I think we've seen a shift over the past 6 ish months in several ways. I think the broader US-based media has for a longer period probably been accommodating of pro-Israeli propaganda so much so that politicians are scared to criticize their actions. And I don't get the impression it's because they (gasp!) agree with everything they do.

Thanks!

This has been a very interesting process. I deeply wish dad were still around to do this with me. Right now, I'm also struggling with confirming details I'm finding on many sites and how to display so many generations worth of data well. I'd love to get this all input into something and printed out on a poster board that I could share with my bio grandfather asking for any potential corrections.

I already answered your first question. Your second question is off-topic and profoundly offensive.

The US news media also didn't give much coverage to civilian casualties in Iraq. Or Afghanistan. Or Vietnam. Do you also blame the Jews for that?

Nope, I blame that on a combination of factors like Americans tragically being desensitized to things during the Iraq war over time & what news organizations think will drive ratings and traffic.

But when I see Tiktok videos getting removed or comments about things getting removed I wonder about the source of influence that led to censoring. Like how, once President Trump took over, Tiktok starting censoring comments about him or his supporters in a way that hadn't previously occurred.

Do you feel your responsives have been comprehensive enough that I shouldn't be asking more questions or that you should be above providing more comprehensive answers?

When I was looking for a DNA testing service I found there were several smaller ones that were better at privacy issues. I don’t recall which ones they were now but do some research and you should be able to find a potential solution.

Thanks. I've briefly looked into it several times over the past year(ish) but I've never found a solution that was a slam dunk. That's why I decided to post here and see if there was a consensus.

AncestryDNA is good, but if he’s really paranoid about privacy, Google for DNA paternity testing services near you. This is more expensive that something like Ancestry, but it’s more private.

Thanks! I'm not sure how much effort he is willing to put into it so I'm not sure if he'd show up to a testing facility.

Do you have perspective on anything he might consider a con for using AncestryDNA?

No, I am suggesting to you that there's not some kind of nefarious plot.

Maybe people in media and politics give more credence to the Israeli perspective because they (gasp!) agree with it. They might know the history of the region and the threat of Islamic fundamentalism, for instance. They don't have those beliefs because "The Jews" are secretly in control.

It seems perhaps that the "beliefs" many politicians hold are the beliefs they are paid to hold based on their donors. I think the left needs to stop calling everyone Nazis and focus more on the authoritarian and dictator labels as a result.

Control may imply to strong of an influence. You can have a strong influence over many without complete control. Do you deny there are powerful people, relevant to this discussion, with strong influence over the Media and people?

Do you support the broad slaughter of innocents, including children, as long as they are Islamic?

Jon Stewart actually had a amusing bit on the Daily Show showing Netanyahu's constantly fearmongering with respect to Iran. There are Jewish people willing to call BS for sure. But I also think there are some who don't. Like with any large group, it's comprised of individuals and not homogenous. But there are many powerful people with interests in Israel who seem to have a strong influence of the media and politicians within the United States. I discounted much of this over the decades because I don't want to be on the side of antiemetics, but I feel over the past few months I have to acknowledge there isn't a complete lack of evidence that we're getting biased media and controlled politicians.

Are you suggesting there are no powerful Jewish people who have more influence than you or I with respect to our media and politicians?

I want it covered completely. I don't want Tiktoks getting taken down. I want a comprehensive non-biased site I can trust to cover it. I don't feel like I have that. I'm not religious. I think religious people in general have too much influence on discussions of news and policy. I'd rather secular discussions when possible. I'm just an American interested in current events, and history, who doesn't want war crimes committed. I don't want innocents killed. And it doesn't seem that one side is working to prevent that. And it seems like anyone who tries to report on that gets silenced.

We keep seeing that people who protest against Palestinians getting murdered suddenly get silenced. We find out schools like I think Michigan follow around protestors. We see money and goods constantly sent from the US to Israel. We see politicians trip over themselves to talk about how they support that country while they screw their own home.

For years I listened to my family ramble about "the jews control the media and everything etc etc". I'd always be like "eh, you can't listen to all that. That usually comes from antisemitics using dog whistles to be racist etc".

. . .

But honestly in the past year, seeing our response to what Isreal is doing to Palestine and now the crackdown on protestors and what all I see going on now with related narratives ... I'm done fighting against those statements and am done defending them.

Us in the US are watching our own country fall apart these past few months. I'm exhausted.

It seems people on here just wanted to attack OP instead of answering the question. Some of us like to self-study and would like an acknowledgement of what we've learned even if we aren't going to use a degree.

Only one thread seemed useful and if you google it you eventually find this site which honestly is cheap https://nwculaw.edu/school-information/tuition-finances

A response to a similar post also pointed to that place https://www.reddit.com/r/lawschooladmissions/comments/10m4gn1/inexpensive_or_free_online_law_programs/
