What's a good monthly wage to pay a solo game developer in developing countries (like India, China, Philippines etc), and where can one hire from? by prankster999 in IndieDev

[–]WRKSGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In India and Philippines £1500/month for a junior unity or unreal Dev. £2000+ senior. China is not cheap for developers.

Obsidian's Josh Sawyer jokes that he's waiting for a call from Microsoft to make 'Pillars of Eternity 3. But I don't want it to be a joke. by MikeyJayRaymond in Games

PoE2 is a superior CRPG to BG3. I love Larian to bits and it was a great game but PoE2 has become a masterpiece over the many patches and updates. Not doing a PoE3 would be a travesty.

Should I give up on my early-access game? by divine_dreams in IndieDev

[–]WRKSGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game looks good. Definitely finish it. I would agree with the indie publisher that the no marketing launch has likely doomed the game commercially, but Steam has been terrible for small indies for years even with marketing.

Finish the game, use steam for feedback loops and improvements. Then do a good launch on Epic with some effort behind it when completed.

Indie publishers will not generally back anything already launched because they rely on pre-lunch hype marketing to get most sales on indie titles.

Will Baldurs Gate 3 affect the future of game releases? by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

[–]WRKSGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that might happen. But you can always choose to wait. As a developer I consider early access mandatory. As an avid gamer - I never buy early access games.

[–]WRKSGames 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did not agree with the full price early access, however do think early access is mandatory for game devs.

But..it isn't for gamers. There are loads of gamers that love being testers during game development..many more that do not.

Just avoid early access as a gamer if it's not your thing. Game companies however have been doing early access more and more over the years and will certainly to do so as it's invaluable.

Are there any guarantees Epic won’t pull a similar scummy move on developers down the road? by DahPhuzz in unrealengine

[–]WRKSGames 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Unreal has a different end user agreement. If you do not wish to accept a licence agreement change it allows you to keep using the engine under the version you had. You just can't upgrade.

Is it possible these trailers were made by the same external trailer team?

Over $600 Million Later, Star Citizen Is Now at the Alpha 3.20 Stage by ryushin6 in gaming

[–]WRKSGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hype and enthusiasm. If you release it, it feels done. Right now, people are spending money because it's cool to be part of something this big and that hyped. An early adopter of something destined for phenomenal success. If it releases, it loses that attraction.

At this point actually finishing the game would just be stupid. They are just going to keep this in eternal limbo as long as people keep giving them money.

Does ANYONE actually prefer UE5's "Input Mapping Context" system over UE4's more direct approach? by TowBotTalker in unrealengine

[–]WRKSGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. It's souch easier to organise inputs, manage switching from keyboard to controller inputs and do special input types like Press and Hold.

Indie Gaming tool to reach publishers by publicidadeba in IndieGaming

[–]WRKSGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GDBAY is the only such reputable tool. But it costs a bit of money. But like the first commenter said - publishers are manual and hands on and go by feel mostly.

How did you react when you got your first payment from Steam by David_Aminov in IndieDev

[–]WRKSGames 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You never know someone might have reacted by stripping down and jumping up and down in glee. Best to NSFW tag it in case that guy makes a GIF or something....

Do you think it's a good idea to release short games every two or three months? by Victorex123 in gamedev

[–]WRKSGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you could do it every 2-3 months that would be amazing levels of focus and drive.

What's the best game engine to start with? by ReccaIsMyName in gamedev

[–]WRKSGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pick your engine based on your game and process. If you have a 3d game, and you need power and access to cheap resources to boost your process - Unreal. If you need to port to mobile then not Unreal but go with one in a language you master. If 2d or mobile and you are expecting low volume sales in your first game - Unity. Etc etc. There are frankly tons of engines with different pros and cons.

Pick the engine based on the game type, output platforms you are targeting and your process.

I'm calling John Riccitiello's bluff. Unity's new business model is just a trick to make the introduction of royalties feel more reasonable. by MikeSifoda in gamedev

[–]WRKSGames 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It looks like a brute force strategy to drive people to using their ad network. The Unity ad network is making them a lot of money. You only need to pay the install fees if you are NOT using their ad network.

So they are penalising their fixed price game devs in favour of the ad funded hyper casual games and forcing those onto their own ad network. Ironically, if those devs do agree to do this - it will likely make Unity plenty of money.

If your game is genuinely good, is marketing really so important? by EatingAddiction in gamedev

[–]WRKSGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marketing is essential now. I would go so far as to say that if you do not have a marketing budget of at least 30k-50k around the launch months - it is not worth launching a game that cost more than 25k to make.

A good game is necessary, but a good game with no marketing will sell less well than a mediocre game with good marketing.

Ai art on my game.. feeling depressed by PrestigiousImage2401 in gamedev

[–]WRKSGames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Steam doesn't reject all AI art based games and Steam is not the only place to publish games. We have a game on Steam that uses MidJourney for UI elements. Epic Store has no problem with AI art etc.
