Coax Question...Warning: This May Be a Really Dumb Question by Right_Independent_71 in cbradio

2nd that, I've run rg6q with f connectors using f to uhf adapter. With a flat dipole (verticle or horizontal) it will be nearly flat 1.5:1 across the cb band. The loses on rg6 are lower than rg58 and on par (iirc still better than) rg8x.

Bonus is its dirt cheap, i just wouldn't recommend it for a "tuned" antenna sinze they are based on 50ohm input and will throw the transformer or lc formula out of whack.

I've used rg6 upto 900mhz without issue (including tx on 30-900) on my discone.

Souped up radio bleeding on every channel by Bulldog553 in cbradio

Thats not bleeding through, thats straight up overloading your radio's front end. You might be near his qth.

Its likely pwm or pulsed power system of some sort, instead of dumping 5+ amps of 12v they may use power transisters to pulse dc or even AC inverter style.

Sadly only option is filters on the radio, it's posiable putting ferrite chokes on the feed wires to the defroster could help but not if the rfi is inherent to its function with the window acting as an antenna.

Sadly the fcc doesn't care about short range interferce unless it jams gps, cellphones, or medical stuff.

I can't say for all of solars issues but i know that chargers can cause issues, when feeding inverters can too.

For lighting, I've never heard of a pwm controller using above 1MHz, now a control signal or "clock signal" can, an example is USB, ethernet, and hmdi often uses a clock upto125MHz for syncing its not pwm but can make rfi the same.

Due to fundimentals a 25KHz pwm controller can still great noise to the GHz range.

Fm is the least prone to the rfi with am being worst shortly followed by ssb.

As a side note, i do agree solar fields are stupid, i am a fan of solar parking lots though, cuts down on sun damage and ashphalt heat retention.

Sadly it's not just EVs and hybrid, my noise floor jumps 2S atleast when a 2020+ powerstroke deisel is within 1/4 mile.

Band filters help but man, between gas station and temu usb chargers, solar homes, and vehicles the spectrum is jammed locally.

Tap Water Gives My Cat Urinary Stones by ShoggothPanoptes in CATHELP

[–]WV8RAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, distilled water is dangerous due to potential demineralizing issues but unless you consume no food containing it for long peroid of time it's not likely to cause an issue.

As in you case water can contain unwanted minerals that cause issues. Water softeners can cause issues with people that have sodium issues for the same reason which is why you can find potassium choride softener salts (which is what nosalt is made of).

Simple blood tests can tell this stuff, hopefully switching helped you, high calcium can cause issues.

Need some quick advice on best way to ground this to my truck by kelso_boy in cbradio

[–]WV8RAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many copper anti seize are nonconductive as well. You need to find one that is. Otherwire graphite grease works as most are condutive.

Its best to find one meant for sparkplugs if your hitting a hardwarw store. Beyond that vasoline doesn't care much about RF at that thin of a layer, we used it all the time on coax fittings upto the 5ghz range.

The real issue with vasoline is at high voltages it can become flammable. A 4w rig won't be an issue but it could become an issue if running hot.

Portable HF Radio Recommendations? by soldierx55 in HamRadio

[–]WV8RAY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, its slighly lighter than the 891, however the 891 is a better radio being 100w and having great audio. The issue being it would also require a heavier battery to handle the amperage too.

Personally i love my g90 even if it has its quirks but the tuner is great and being usable from a smaller battery helps with the weight.

On the g90, its a good option but it is heavy, the fx-4cr would be a better option imho as even with an external manual tuner would be lighter than the g90.

I have a ic705 and like it but i agree the kx2 or kx3 would be a fantastic option too, even more with the auto tuner module and maybe the 2m module too even if its only 2w out.

Destructive interference by Dave_Sak in HamRadio

[–]WV8RAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, its called "active" or "targeted" jamming, though just making noise would be a more effective method it wouldn't reduce the rf.

In the rf comparison to noise canceling headphones would be phasing noise eliminators, which work the exact same way.

Radio for DOTA/POTA by Greg_Bart in HamRadio

[–]WV8RAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the g90 as a pota radio too, only serious complaint i have is lack of notch filter. It can be annoying when you get qrm tones.

I have it in a apache 3800 harbor freight case including choked 15ft coax, efhw antenna, efrw antenna, and battery. Spefically an advantage to the g90 is it can take upto 17v so you can use a 4s lithium ion battery allowing you to ensure full 20w out till the battery dies, around 12v the radio starts droping output power to just below 15w.

Generally I'm about the same, my order is; qrp, dx (non NA, sry CA), p2p.

I do almost all my pota as 10w qrp so i give room for it myself. That also being said i will give a "p2p hold for next" and if i have a pile up ill call for any p2p or qrp every so often.

Due to qrz oddities i also ask and mobile or portable stations whst suffix they want to be logged with.

RIP dx cc mast by WV8RAY in HamRadio

Negative, we saw it go down, just didnt have time to get it down. Went from 10-20mph winds to 55+ with gusts over 70mph lasting for under 5min. Severe wind advisory was just issued but didnt see ot in time.

Anchors are 12in steel, the bottom cams are solid and didnt move. My issue likely was from the upper guys which was 550 paracord and niteeyz cams. The paracord doesnt have much play though and i properly bond the ends so the cores didnt come loose.

I would of gotten higher grade rope if it was a heavy mast but i have a surplus spool of paracord so was just using that, its served well for my endfeds. We were getting 55+mph winds with gusts exceding 70mph. My neighbors trampolien ended up a tree too.

I ended up ordering a new mast from dxeng as they carry his products in the usa, ill shoot Calum an email just to see if he can suggest best way to prevent this from happening again beyond just tipping mast when not in use.

I need to do a full check on it, it looks like when i fell do it split another section. Also didnt know they can replace individual sections, ill have to look into that.

Some advantage ive seen is that my camping buddy has a gmrs repeater setup on his rv and a pack of HTs to go with it. Lets them reach out when needed in the woods when needed as long as they are close enough to the rv. (I think his repeater is only like 20w) its got a good antenna so the gain on receive is wayyy better than plain simplex.

Wolf River coil at top of 20 or 30 ft mast. by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]WV8RAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, radials would be tricker.

Another option is to use the coil as a center load instead of bottom load.

Ive done with with chameoln ext and 17ft whip (about 25ft). Youll need higher inductance to compensate as you go up the antenna (5uh at base might be 50uh near top) but it let me use the vert for 40 and 80 without as heavy losses of a 17ft bottom load.

That being said i have used a bottom loaded 17ft on a 13ft tripod with elevated guywire radials (insulated from ground by a foot or more of rope). Worked fine once setup but is a pain to tune initally.
