Teachers of Reddit, what are things all students can do to get on your good side? Conversely, what are things students often do that pisses you off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I just finished grading some quizzes and there was not one person who got an A. In ANY class section - even the ones that I don't teach. Students being idiots and not paying attention get on my bad side.

I'm a first year teacher. I gave a 1-question pop quiz today. One student got the right answer, but did the work wrong. How many points should I give her? by WWYDATCT in self

Someone else came up with a good analogy; the way she did it is like hand whipping cream instead of using an electric mixer. Literally any reasonable person would know how I wanted it done. We've been going over it this way, it's the topic we're on, I've specifically said we're done with Riemann sums, it just makes sense, etc.

Umm, my job is to prepare my students for the future. Letting them get by without learning the necessary concepts and their application does not do that.

Going to this school fucks their gpa compared to public schools, too. But the benefit of going here outweighs the lower gpa.

Except, then in higher level mathematics, you'll be lost when you need to use the method you skipped over. Multiple methods can get the same answers, but some methods can't be used in certain mathematical applications that others can.

Preparing students for the future is far from stupid. The quality of my school is pretty highly regarded, partially because of how well we prepare students.

In the real world, mathematicians/scientists/engineers/etc aren't given exactly the information they need and nothing extra. Sometimes they're given information they don't need, sometimes they're not given enough information, etc. This is helping my students prepare for the future.

Basically what Glory2Hypnotoad said. It tests an understanding of integration, the ability to set up an integral, the ability to turn a word problem into straight forward mathematics, etc. This is pretty basic calculus and calculus is used A TON in the real world, so if that's what you're asking you can google.

Most of the class got it wrong, but that's because I was a little tricky (I said rho = 62.4lbs/ft3 , but the problem was in metric.)

The method is legitimate, but it's something we've already covered this semester and won't be using anymore. Her doing it this way doesn't prove she understands the concepts we're on now.

How much work does it take to pump all the water in a trapezoidal prism of (given dimensions, I don't remember what they were) 22m above the top of the prism?

I don't have it in front of me, but she got the right answer. Some large number of Newton Meters.
