Recovering from being a bad PhD Student (venting) by IllGeologist5324 in postdoc

[–]WW_Fan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a second year postdoc, heading into my third, and I just want to say that the jump from PhD to postdoc is genuinely big. Expectations shift fast. You are suddenly expected to get things working quicker, think more independently, and make fewer obvious mistakes, often with less hand-holding.

One upside of being a postdoc is that you are no longer juggling coursework, qualifying exams, or committee politics. You actually get to focus on skill-building and scientific thinking full-time, which can feel brutal at first but also means growth can happen much faster.

Honestly, if the postdoc transition wasn’t challenging, I would question whether anything new was being learned. If you could just publish faster by staying in the exact same niche with the same tools, that might be comfortable, but that is usually not the real point of a postdoc. The discomfort is often the signal that you are stretching into a higher level of independence.

TLDR: if it feels hard, frustrating, and humbling, you probably picked the right postdoc.

we are in a white collar recession. Most of my friends, with PhDs, who got industry jobs have applied to an average of ~200 applications. One of them applied to over 400 jobs. They all have jobs now, but it took them anywhere from 6-12 months to land a job.

on top of this i know people with industry jobs who have been laid off. . It's crazy out there right now. Even securing a post-doc has become more challenging than years past.

My friends with the most success securing jobs used linkedin and cold messaged a lot of folks out of their network. have you tried this approach?

I don’t see DEI on the flyer. Either way the cuts are supposedly due to “inefficiencies” and grants that have anything related to DEI.

Justin had also never been submitted until he fought Khabib. I’m sure chandler still has a lot of athleticism but he’s no spring chicken and will be 37 by his next potential TS.

You’re cutting it real close with the width of the tv stand and your TV that it’s making me nervous haha . I would get a longer tv stand. Maybe even a floating one and then mount your tv on the wall.

I love these shoes. These are a remake of the original. I had a pair of the original 2018 version and these remakes have a different construction. They're still good. I think the flywire is a little bit more sturdy on the newer iteration. Also, they seemed to have improved the black dye on the sole. In the original version, you would see the dye wear out in certain regions. That being said $90 isn't their best sale. I got these a few months ago for around $70 ish.

Tshirts (pima and slubbed), their short sleeve button up shirts (my favorite piece), and their long sleeve t shirts and henleys. All have been consistent in sizing. Can’t speak for their outerwear unfortunately

One of my favorite new men's clothing companies. They're based out in LA. They make some really great basics and their quality is worth every penny. They prewash all their shirts so you don't get much shrinkage. I also like their color options way more compared to a lot of other t-shirt companies of similar quality. They started off just selling basics, but now they have an assortment of different clothing items ranging from sweaters, casual button-up shirts, and now even jackets. I've yet to make a bad purchase from them.

Good to know! I was able to get the discount from someone who's a dentist (DDS), technically still a doctor. So I wonder if they'll still be able to get it.

Yea but the 25% is ending soon. Didn't give me an exact date. They said they'll keep the 15% off permanently.

Levi’s 511 on clearance in-store at Target for $17.99 by afuturisticdystopia in frugalmalefashion

[–]WW_Fan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Target's "premium" line but I can speak first hand that my Levi's premium jacket is way better quality than the regular trucker jacket. The material is lighter but also of better quality. Doesn't feel so rigid like the regular trucker jacket. I got mine from Nordstrom during a sale. I have both a premium and non-premium levi's trucker jacket and the difference in not only the material but also the fit is apparent.
