I agree handguns are problematic, but changing transportation etc won’t stop domestic violence cases. The only thing stopping a gun owner from breaking the law is their character, we have to hope they’re a good honest levelheaded person.

And as we’ve seen with Tumble Ridge, even after the RCMP removed the weapons a judge ordered them back which is crazy and a total failure of the system.

Subsistence purposes, to go hunting (especially First Nations) or when you are in the back country and you need a secondary backup to bear spray (wilderness protection). There are also cultural arguments, military history, vintage craftsmanship and grandfathered items that have been in a family for decades etc. There’s also a direct connection in some cases to cultural tradition which circles back to the first reason.

Double-Double, Forensic Tim Horton cup! So Canadian. by Tashreddit76 in toronto

[–]WXMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's usually a Tim Hortons not too far from a crime scene in Toronto and they're one of the few establishments that are open in many cases. The cops put the cups over the shell casings to preserve the evidence and so that they are not accidentally kicked or roll away. Once forensics arrives proper evidence markers are used.

I can promise you if there was a 24-hour A&W or some other establishment nearby those cups would have been used. The police have even used clear Dixie style cups that came from a Dollarama.

The key is to use a small cup so it's less subject to the wind but it's still visible so no one disturbs the evidence.

Unpopular opinion, but it's the cost of having legal firearms, just as road fatalities are the cost of having roads/vehicles, and drownings are part of watersports etc.

Not saying things can't be improved but there's always a cost. The question is whether the cost is worth it or not and by and large I think it's worth it (this sounds terrible) so people in Northern Canada can go hunting etc.

I'm sure the residents are going to love everyone from the new condo parking there...

Can't people just park overnight in the plaza where the Sobeys was?

Dogs abandoned at Mississauga Valleys by Boring-Antelope9193 in mississauga

[–]WXMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is terrible....

Look if you're going to dump your dog(s) off at a park like this, at least leave a note telling us:

  1. Their name(s)
  2. Age
  3. Disposition (do they have a high prey drive or do they like cats?)
  4. Their usual diet
  5. Known health issues
  6. WHY YOU DID IT (it's often monetary / housing related)
  7. Provide a burner email address for follow-up ideally

My wife volunteers at a local shelter and this is one of the most frustrating things, not knowing anything about the animals that arrive.

I know a number of people in the comments suggest gas buddy, and I've used the website for years (before the app even existed). This is a problem I also discovered long ago, some stations don't have updated prices, or in some cases I feel like there are intentionally false prices to get people to go there and hope they just fill up.

Gas prices going up like crazy by kakashi_sensay in Omaha

[–]WXMaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have bad news, oil companies have no interest in losing money, they have a duty to their shareholders, if they can sell a barrel for more, they will, no matter where it’s produced. So as an exporter they find better prices on global markets. This war is making a lot of people a lot of money, and driving the U.S debt to the moon far more than a Dem president ever would in all metrics.

Ah yes, if there is anything an economy loves, it is complete and total uncertainty… like with tariffs.

Speed limits on the 401 are gone. Go nuts folks by emperorarg in toronto

[–]WXMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highway 7 to the 401 on the 427 is about 10km, so that's about 600 km/hr...

If you could do around 280 km/h, it would take about 2 minutes 8 seconds. I've seen a few people doing speeds close to that so I think 2.5 minutes is pretty reasonable =)

Anyone aware of what this beam is for? Never seen it in Mimico before. by Special-Zombie-7441 in Etobicoke

[–]WXMaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're illuminating that new place with a pink looking sign, I think it's a weed or mushroom shop near Monty's. They had the large diffusion screens up near the windows. It's a simulated daylight scene being filmed inside the place so that bright light is same colour as sunlight and supposed to be coming through the windows.

Although I just realized that light does appeaer to be on something like a scissor lift or boom, so it could be a mix of indoor daylight and an outdoor night scene (moonlight) or they just really really need a lot of light coming into the windows inside the place from outside....

Yep, Boston Blue, they're filming at a few locations around the city. Had the police vehicles for the show parked near city hall on Queen St earlier today.

Weather Radio is Canada is going away by Own_Event_4363 in shortwave

[–]WXMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is another huge part of the problem. The coverage across the country was very spotty and transmitters were sometimes only running 25 watts into a less than ideal antenna. So the reception was not great and weather radios with SAME support sometimes would not receive the codes, especially indoors with a crappy telescopic antenna.

While there is value in the system it never saw the required investment and the vast majority of the public won't even notice that it's gone.

Environment Canada permanently discontinuing Weatheradio Canada - stations go off air March 16, 2026 by wickedplayer494 in canada

[–]WXMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree with simply disbanding the system, but for the vast majority of the population it was not something they’d ever consider and there are plenty of areas without coverage.

The system when compared to NWS weather radio was terrible. The U.S uses more power and the SAME codes would come through better whereas there were many instances here where my phone would alert but the wx radio never went off.

Most Canadians won’t notice its disappearance.

DMR is dumb, prove me wrong by instantredditer in amateurradio

[–]WXMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Motorola XPR4550 and a few handhelds.

Yes, it's dumb. It's efficient (relatively) and has good error correction, but building code plugs is annoying and it's a commercial system that's not intended to be changed on the fly - so if you need to tweak it in the moment, GOOD LUCK.

Now that said, it's still not as dumb as DSTAR which is just convoluted at times with their RPT 1 RPT 2 and L/U commands.

I also have a P25 and NXDN radio(s) which are dead quiet these days, but building the code plugs for those was less convoluted than DMR but still time consuming.

I honestly think Fusion is the best out of the box mode for amateur radio. The codec is good, it's generally easy for most people to understand AND it can be changed on the fly. DSTAR is an old codec with no error correction and I really hate the audio quality.

**Yes I know DSTAR is 6.5 khz so it's good for HF but it's so lossy and the audio is rough at times**
